Someone suggested in response to my post yesterday "Buy American". I agree with the concept......unfortunately, the basic problem is that we (USA) don't make too many things anymore. US manufacturers continue to move operations to other countries and/ or out-source everything. If China takes us over, it won't be through a war.....they simply will own everything. Here is the scary truth. Those so-called "third world" nations like China have become quite advanced with quickly growing middle class made up of folks like you and me who want all the same things we want. So, the bottom line is that the same resources (oil, minerals etc) are under greater demand.....not to mention the competition for jobs. Another bottom line is that there are plenty of well educated, highly motivated people in other countries willing to do the same work for less money. The final bottom line is that the Chinese have taken up the phrase "Buy American" and they are doing it literally......buying up American businesses. How do we bring it all back ? That is the question.

Bob, In response to your questioin as to what can be done, I think the first thing is to re-think all these free trade agreements. A lot of companies were given money in the way of tax breaks and grants to build overseas but I can't think of a single product that has gone down in price with the cheaper labor. All they did was take the American worker out of it.

well i buy as much american as i can. If u would stop and think of every time u buy something and look on the bottom (made in china) You still can help alittle by shopping in your american stores. You guys in Brooklyn still have American mom and Pop shops. I go to fort hamilton to Gary the Butcher and buy my meat, 74th street and 13th avenue a and a Fruit market for my vegetables. I go out of my way to shop american. Some things u don't have a choice. Food u do. People wake up and stop being lazy and move your asses to your American shops....I have been saying this for along time. We shop in chinese stores and Arab stores but they do not shop in our stores they buy from their own kind... Now see Umbria u got me started. I just got an email about this the other day. Just my 2 cents again

What will happen when these overseas work forces decide that they too want a good wage and benefits. There may be a growing middle class out there but I don't think its the factory workers or the walmart workers in china that are forced to accept walmart housing. GEEZ... what got me started????LOL

    Tim,

The reality is that it is cheaper for US manufacturers to have it done in another country. There are US drug companies which have all the lab equipment and personnel to do testing but it is cheaper (even with the shipping cost) to send a drug substance sample to a contract lab in India than to pay their own US employees to do the testing. That guy named "Bob" who answers the Amazon.com help line phone is really named Bhupthal and he is answering the phone in Bangalore, India.....and may have a PhD in IT.

You can buy a pair of flip flops at the 99 cents store. How much do you think they would cost if they were made in the US ? Did you know that a large percentage of "Italian" shoes are made in one city in China ? That city is Wenzhou (south of Shanghai).

Your generic drugs would cost a lot more if the drug substances and the finished products were made here instead of in China or India.

So, what do we do ? Accept that we will pay a lot more for our daily purchases ? Spend less ? Expect that our paychecks will not go as far as they use to in order to buy stuff made here and just tighten our belts and tell our kids to work harder and expect less ? As I indicated earlier, there are a lot of well educated, highly motivated people in other countries who will work for a lot less (and the money goes further where they live).

Even Chase MANHATTAN BANK WHEN U CALL THEY ARE FROM INDIA.
WOULD YOUR HIGHLY SKILLED KID WORK FOR PEANUTS I DON'T THINK SO.
Although I must say my younger son Jonathan when he moved to S.I. he worked for this BIG Italian company and he was the only white american boy at 15 painting dumpsters with Mexicans. The S.I. kids their mothers gave them everything. My son had to work for what he wanted. Granted i did help him along the way but he showed me he was a hard worker. He was treated just like an immigrant worker and he went to school with owners son who was driving a new car at 16 and my son was driving a s--t box that he would not pull into the school parking lot because all the boys had new cars..I do not keep up with the JONE'S
