Tish James is the best — Brooklynian

Tish James is the best

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
A few weeks ago we called 311 because rats are nesting in our front yard and thought the City should know. They came out and did an inspection and then a few weeks later we got a citation in the mail from the Department of Health claiming that we had a garbage situation which violated the health code, causing the rat problem. The problem was that the trash situation they described was the apartment building next door the description of the problem on the citationwas detailed and clearly not on our property). We got a citation to clean up our neighbors trash problem. Ridiculous, we call the City to report a health hazard and end up geting a citation for it. (Actually, my wife was warned when she called 311 that if they came out they would probably give us a citation but that seemed so ridiculous that we didn't believe it.)

I e-mailed Councilwoman James around 5:00 last Thursday and by 7:15 I had both an e-mail response and a follow up phone call assuring me that she would look into it. On Monday someone from the DOH called to follow up and after talking to my wife for a while decided to come out and look for himself. He was here a half hour later and spent about an hour looking around, agreeing that we had beeni incorrectly cited.

I was amazed at the quick initial response from the Councilwoman and very pleased with the final outcome. I encourage anyone with issues with the City to not hesitate to contact her for help. I think if she thinks your beef is reasonable she will be all over it.

  • Was this right before elections? I think she sucks!!! For the last 2 years all she cares about is the Atlantic Yards project. Vanderbilt Ave had a crime wave last year and I heard she sent the wrong precinct to meet with the merchants. Also, I have never seen her in this neigborhood. We used to see Davis all the time.

speak for yourself man, she is responsible for the new building code demanding twice the amount of bathroom facilities for women in certain newly contructed buildings. i will love her forever.

This can't be right. Whatever precinct it was, wouldn't they politely inform her that it was not their district?

Maybe not if they were being paid overtime to be there!

I think BDZ sucks! I've never seen him/her on this board!

no, seriously, Tish is all over the neighborhood and her district. I doubt she ever even sleeps.
  • leticia is a real grassroots politician who tries her best to represent a very diverse constituency. I've voted for her every time she's run and i'm glad she's in office. the lesson to learn from dr. F is that when you get caught in the gears of our gigantic city bureaucracy you can turn to leticia for help.
  • I'm in the James boat, too. If only because she's obviously on top of the job (she also responded quickly and professionally to an email I sent months back).

If you've got a legitimate complaint in the neighborhood (trash, crime, police, etc) give her a shout. You may be surprised.

I'm considering contacting her about the state of the abandoned building across from the basketball courts on Bergen between Vanderbilt and Flatbush. The trash now includes a propane tank and some used medical supplies. Sketch.
  • A lot of the quality of life issues we talk about (street lights, sanitation), can also been addressed through the community board, by making a call to the district office. People tend to turn to Tish's office or 311, but this is part of the CB's responsibilities.
  • I totally respect what people think of her, but I still think she sucks. She might be a great politician, but I don't know of anyhing she has done for Prospect Heights aside from trying to fight off Ratner. We still have little if any police presence in the neighborhood, cars speed down Vanderbilt Avenue without a concern for public safety, and Vanderbilt Ave, can be uncomfortably dark at night. As for her sending the wrong precinct, ask the merchants on Vanderbilt Ave, I have.

To those that see her "often," I'm curious as to where she hangs out. We live in a small neighborhood and I don't see how she can be around so much and only a few people notice.

I saw her speak at P.S8 she was very eloquent, and that is on underhill.

She's working with DOT on the traffic issue for Vanderbilt in particular. They have a slow-ass review process (minimum 90 days), but neckdowns are one of the things being considered. She answered a letter of mine about fatalities--I live on Vanderbilt and have seen two people hit head-on by cars in the past 18 months--and had a staff member follow up for details. I would expect to see action on this in the next few months.

I'm totally with you on the police presence issue. I think it's bullshit that richies in Park Slope get so much attention from the cops, while the only time they're guaranteed to be here is during major public events such as the West Indian Day Parade. I would love to here Councilwoman James' opinion/proposed action on this.

You must be thinking of another school, PS8 isn't on underhill.
  • Yes, P.S. 8 is in Brooklyn Heights.
  • I think Captain M means PS 9 on Underhill. She has spoken there quite often. She also makes it a point to attend the Education Committe open forums they have at many local schools.
  • I have seen Council Member James all over, from community meetings in Crown Heights North to meetings about the abandoned Officers Houses in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She is very involved with the Atlantic Yards projects but on the times I have gone up and spoken to her she told me she likes to hear and work on other issues, b/c the Atlantic Yards issue can be so overwhelming and divisive.
  • Subject: Tish is everywhere at once

I find her hard to avoid. She is at every meeting there is. I know that she met with at least some of the merchants some months ago. This week I saw he at the Cindy Sheehan event and the Borough President debate, both at Lafayette Av Pesbyterian church. Last winter, she called the dept of health in to different neighborhoods to discuss the rat problems. Rats or Ratner she stands up for the neighborhoods. She is always at the CB2 meeting and often at CB6 and CB8. She works with the clergy, the seniors and the day care centers. She helps people who are being displaced from their homes. As for the police, I wonder if those who complain attend the precinct council meetings and the community board meetings or if it is just too easy to complain and wait for someone else to do the hard work. There has to be a reason she won the primary by 84%.
