I was in Ozzie's on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope and I think this takes the 'let's scam our customers every way we can' award. In order to use your wireless internet connection, you have to "register" with an online site and minimum is $6 a day. I've never seen this elsewhere. In fact, most places use having wi-fi as a way to get you in. I was very aggravated by this. Despite practically everything being commercialized in our world already, this seemed most egregious.

  • They're about four years behind the times. They'll drop the service altogether when nobody uses it. Hear me now, believe me later. Consider that San Francisco is working on a plan for city-wide free WiFi...
  • True, but if you sit at Ozzie's with your WiFi you can actually pick up plenty of other signals for free (at least at the one on 7th Ave.).

Isn't that true for Philly as well? I think that I remember reading about a hubbub brewing (mostly coming from the more traditional internet service providers) a few months ago...
  • Yes, I think Philly is farther along; they're currently accepting bids and I think they're deciding this fall.

A lot of places (Starbuck's, even McDonald's I think) used to try to charge for Wifi. Not $6, though! That's dumb, especially when there are other nearby places that have it for free. I guess they're trying to make money off of people who get one coffee and then sit all day, but I feel like that's an annoyance that comes with the territory of running a cafe.
  • I worked at Ozzie's in my youth, the owner is really stingy. On the other hand, rent there must be crazy and their coffee isn't so hot so I'm sure he needs the money.
  • It's $6 at most airports too

jet blue at kennedy and west palm beach offer it for free. :)

i agree re: the coffee not being so hot at ozzie's and everyone's comments .... people sitting all day that comes with the 'territory' of running a cafe. We all get exposed everyday to things that you can't believe get corporate sponsors and people find new ways of making $ from what was once free but this really took me by surprise as pushing the envelope.

I would say with the comments about cities being WiFi everywhere that I think there are health concerns, similar to cell phones, with it. I don't know about all the technology but I always feel worse and sort of headachey after I use the WiFi on my computer. I've read the reports on cell phone concerns that are more prevalent in Britain than here ... and feel like this is all a time bomb waiting to happen. (similar to how everyone was smoking cigarettes initially with no health concerns and then it became big ones.)

anyway, it's probably true they will have to stop charging (but when?). Airports seem different than your local neighborhood cafe. and what else can you get there at ozzie's - channels? I didn't 'log on.'

    thanks everyone!

Do you have any info on this? I thought that the concerns with cellphones had to do with holding an electromagnetic device next to your head for long periods of time, not with the signal. And I thought Wifi operated on radio frequencies, which had better be safe because pretty much everyone in the world is getting exposed to them and has been for many decades.

WiFi internet signals are on the same band as cordless home phones. If WiFi signals were and issue then there would be people going nuts over cordless phones and that hasn't happened because it's a non-issue.

Cell phones are a whole different ballgame.

i'll find out more info. i could be right, i could be 'wrong.' i do believe there are people with issues with the cordless phones ... but as we know... not every health concern, every issue gets attention. so that's not necessarily a barometer and cell phones get minimal attention as it is.

I think the U.S. Air terminal at LGA has it free too. Too bad I usually fly American!

I think what Ozzie's is doing is pretty typical for a coffee shop... in Manhattan!
