DH'ers on dodgeball.com?
Subject: DH'ers on dodgeball.com?
Hey, are any of you on http://www.dodgeball.com? I am. it's pretty cool, though everyone in my network lives in the LES, East Village, or Williamsburg. I'd love it if more people responded to my @soda with @sepia or something.PM me if you want my info. we should have some sort of bizarre, roving DH-driven dodgeball faction. or something.
p.s. I don't work for google or dodgeball. I just think dodgeball is a really, really cool service.

I'm actually on it from way back (I still swear I'm not a hipster!), but I haven't used it forever. I'm all for using technology to have someone to drink with at 11:30 when I'm in my sweats but not really that sleepy.

Wow, I've never even *heard* of this. I feel like I've crossed some invisible line into old/lameness without even knowing about it.

Well, it never caught on that big as far as I can tell. I got a message from a friend last weekend and I was confused because I forgot I was on the damned thing. It started up summer/fall '03 I believe. -

Don't sweat it. It's a decent concept that maybe works sometimes. And not due to the technology. But more related to the fact that sometimes when you're out and about, text messaging a service seems a bit much.
Was hyped to high heaven in NYC due to the fact that the guy who developed it went to NYU and self-promoted himself in the 'blogosphere' like crazy. -
So... is this just a simplified way of texting a group of people? I think that the 10-block proximity thing is cool, but other than that... is there something that I'm missing?

I'm not sure what their connection to Google is, but there's going to be more functionality because of that connection. You can do some cool stuff with it -- get an address of a bar by texting with the name of the bar. send a message to a group of friends (not only a location, an actual message). and, of course, tell people where you are. I don't have a huge network on it, but some of my friends do, and being out with them is pretty funny. they send their dodgeball and then other people just start showing up. it obviously works really well in areas like the east village, LES and williamsburg where the bars-per-square-block ratio is high.
I also find that I txt or receive texts from a lot of people in the neighborhood saying something like "hey, I'm/we're at soda/sepia/half/tavern on dean -- come by". it would be cool if everybody got on dodgeball so we could skip some steps. -
Well, at least I figured out that it didn't have to do with actual dodgeball playing...
How many messages do you tend to get from this thing per day? I'm not opposed to doing a mass-signup, but I have to say that I'd probably not want to go out more often than I would. Would I be getting 10 texts a day about bars to go to when I'm supposed to be studying? -

You can turn messages off now -- thankfully because sometimes it used to get really annoying. -
I got excited, I thought this thread was really about playing dodgeball.

ok. there are enough of us actually on dodgeball (http://www.dodgeball.com) now that there are a lot of texts flying around on weekends from places in the 'hood.
also, one of my pals is working over in the dodgeball offices, so, come february, when they upgrade their code, we can give them a wish list and he may be able to make the changes!
horray! -
this looks cool...
