How much do you tip the FreshDirect guy?

By the way, this was much funnier before my "Fuck you for even asking this question you fucking Yuppie!" choice somehow disappeared! I don't know if I was censored or I just screwed up somehow.

I just got my first delivery from them last night and i think it's going to be the last. They messed up half my order. Lots of things missing. After i called and complained they credited me, but that and the fact that they go nuts with the cardboard kinda turned me off to them. One huge box completely empty except for a small wedge of cheese and a 1/2 lb of hamburger. That's just wasteful.
$47 worth of groceries..something like 8 or 9 small items took up 5 boxes. -
I'm just commenting to say that I didn't edit your poll and I doubt anyone else did.
Make sure you click "add option" after each option. There should be a BLANK box below your last one. If you don't click "add option" to get the new blank box, your last option won't upload. -
And it seems like there's no way to edit the basic poll once you post it, right? only your message that you posted it with...
-
Don't forget, they are supposed to pack meats and cheeses separately from vegetables and other food products.

i live on the 4th floor of a walk up and i always feel bad for delivery people. i give $5 or so, depending on how much i order. my boyfriend always gets pissed at me, since the fresh direct website clearly says we're not obligated to tip unless i've received 'exceptional service'. i don't know what's exceptional about delivering boxes, but i always give something.
i have never had a bad experience with them. they forgot one item in one order... when i called, there was no hassle... they credited immediately. -

Wasn't me either. Probably human error. -
To err is human, to correct is Mod.
It seems like I can always go back and edit my polls.
Anyway, you pretty much covered the options.
As you note, they explicitly state that tipping is not required. If you are feeling guilty about a big order, then maybe $2-3? Just throwing that out there. -
$5. I live on the third floor, and they always carry it up for me. Don't order that often because I agree the cardboard wastage is a HUGE problem.
-
I give $5 and am happy to do so. My orders have ranged from $100 to 250, and they act pleased when I offer the money. I have received credits for my mistakes as well as theirs! I don’t understand the concerns about cardboard. You tie it up and recycle it. My problem is putting the food into my fridge! Their wine descriptions are hard to decipher but we’ve been happy with our purchases. All for about $10.The quality has been exceptional. Especially, the seafood. I have not found a coffee that I like yet, but I have been paying Starbuck prices and will probably have to go that route.

I tip $3 - $5.

The Guatamalan Antigua is more than adequate, at about $6/lb. However, I'm one of those people who likes coffee-flavored coffee.
As for tipping, I do so if they carry it up (I'm on the third floor). $3-$5 depending on how much stuff. If I'm feeling up to it and/or cheap, I have them put it in the vestibule, carry it up myself, and no tip.
Separately, I always tip restaurant delivery guys about 15% (20-25% if it's pouring or psycho-cold). The idea of taking "Free Delivery" seriously would be the height of cheap. Of course, I did my time waiting tables... -
I generally don't tip, but if its an extra-big order, I give them 5.00.
On a related note: how much do you tip the guy who does your laundry? -
The guy who does my laundry? Well, other than love and sex, I don't tip him at all.
-
If you tip the laundry people, where does it all stop?
Do you tip the sandwich maker at Subway? Do you tip the cashier at Natural Land? Do you tip the guy at Nok who inspects your car? -

Some laundries are tip places, some aren't. Vanderbilt Laundry, just up from the fish joint, is supra-cheap and the ladies who fold the laundry get tipped. The Evil No Good Destroyed $200 Worth Of Meggle's And My Clothes and Wouldn't Pay For It Even In Services Laundry next to Acme Pet Food and the Met charged more when I patronized them, with the understanding that there was no tipping.
Do you tip the sandwich maker at Subway? Do you tip the cashier at Natural Land? Do you tip the guy at Nok who inspects your car?
Coffee joints? Oh hell no. Restaurants which do nothing but prepare your food (such as delis)? No.
Side note: People who tend to get the shittiest tips from me: cabbies who pitch a bitch about driving from Manhattan to Brooklyn. This also can take on a passive form from them, such as driving like a maniac and jerking the brakes as violently as possible. Cockmonkeys.
Rant over. -

Wow, I thought they only did that to women who want to go to Brooklyn.
What these cabbies don't seem to understand is that there are many (or at least some) of us who, when we are able to get the exceedingly rare, uneventful, attitude-free ride from Manhattan to Brooklyn, will be extraordinarily generous with a tip because, 1) we are utterly relieved that we didn't have to go through "Taking a Cab to Brooklyn Hell"; and 2) we understand that there are, particularly during rush hours, the missed fare opportunities should the driver get stuck in traffic or not get a fare on the way back (NOT that that is ANY excuse for being drivers being assholes).
I will not tip a cabbie who makes my life hell on a trip from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Conversely, the nice ones get a very healthy tip. -

That's unusual, daveb--we usually get about $100 worth of groceries at a time, and it's usually about 3 boxes with a bag of frozen stuff on top. Maybe you happened to order things that were supposed to be packaged separately?

As for tipping, I give them a couple of bucks if it's horrible out or if I happen to have cash at hand, but sometimes I don't and figure it's no big deal since they are paid a non-tip-dependant wage (unlike, say, waiters or normal food delivery people). -
Sheesh...am I the only person who doesn't have problems with cabbing it to Brooklyn? I say "Brooklyn, ___ (address)" and that's pretty much it. Sometimes they say they'll need me to guide them, but I don't get any attitude. I've had more grumbling being lazy and going less than a half mile/crosstown than I have coming home. I take a cab like once every three months so YMMV natch.

If the bulk of their income isn't derived from tips, but they still provide a service for you on a regular basis, I would think that a holiday season tip/gift would be sufficient.

Sure seems like it ... you lucky girl
What's the trick? Maybe you should start "Candicissima's Cabbing it to Brooklyn Consulting Corporation" aka CCBCC

I used to have problems, but that stopped when I started to preface "Brooklyn" with, "...just off of Flatbush, near Grand Army..." -
I usually give the FD guy $3.00 if my delivery is five boxes or more. They only have to walk up the stoop but they are always very friendly and pleasant.
It irks me too that they sometimes put one or two things in a box. They need to come up with something better. I also don't like that they use styrofoam containers for some of their veggies.
As far as the cabs go, I usually tell a yellow home at least once a week from NYC and have never had a Brooklyn problem BUT I spoke to a co-worker today and he lives out in Sheepshead Bay. He told me he could NEVER get a cab. I think us PH'ers are lucky to live close to both bridges. I usually give a big tip ($6.00-$8.00) on a $16.00 fare since my company reimburses me. -

In my delivery today the tomatoes in their styrofoam container were, for some reason, packed inbetween the beer and canned goods. I had crushed tomatoes all over the box (maybe it was meant to be a 'freebie'). Got the full amount credited to my account for the tomatoes and everything else in the box. I think it was worth it for free beer.
