Went to Mezcal's on 5th last night...it was good.
-
Avoid Lobos on 5th Ave at all costs - I think my mom's weekly taco night when I was growing up was better.
-
I would say La Taqueria. Rancho Allegre has been a disappointment at times.
-
i really like La Taqueria as well, so much that i havn't bothered to try any other places.. oh but Uncle Moe's which i usually go to in manhattan, has a 5th ave park slope location. and they have really good stuff, but its a counter service type place.. not a sit down get waited on place.
La Taqueria is also the closest one from flatbush ave and since im usually taking the bus for train from PLG it was the one I went to the most. But it is delicious and i love the huge paintings they have there. -
Miracle Grill on 7th Avenue is good, but I am not sure if it is Mexican or Southwestern influenced. In any event, they serve nachos.
-
Los Pollitos Dos on 5th Ave.
-
Hands down - Maria's on Union/4th
-

We used to live near their other branch in Caroll Gardens and liked it. Very friendly. -
I love LA taqueria on 7th. The mole burrito is one of my favorites but it is a sweet mole sauce. I tried Los Pollitos II this weekend for the first time and had the chicken mole enchiladas. The sauce was great. Sweet and spicy.

OK... weird posts, like the one above, are probably coming from a spambot, testing the waters. It's coming from an IP based in Spain. I keep waiting for it to unleash its torrent of electric pixillated death. I would ban the IP right now, but I'm really curious how this will play out.
Since the spambot brought up the topic of Mexican restaurants:
1. If you haven't been to Mezcal's on 5th Ave., go.
2. Santa Fe is fun for large parties. The food isn't anything special. If you get invited, definitely go.
3. Still waiting to check out Toys-R-Us Burrito Bar on Flatbush Ave. NFP, sorry we could not accept the margarita invite. Next week?
4. Maria's Mexican Kitchen is definitely worth the trek to 4th and Union:

What's a spambot? Am I a spambot?
I really wanted to know if there were some great places I've been missing. I will definately try Maria's and some other places mentioned above. I love La Taquaria, too. I've only gotten take-out there and hadn't seen the mole burrito before. I don't know if that's cause I haven't been in a while or I just missed it. -

No, I was referring to the post way below yours that said: "Well that was a bit messed up..." It was added by a spam robot, or spambot, that's searching the internet for bulletin boards like this to deposit spam upon. -
On Fourth Ave between 10th and 11th St there's a takeout place with really nice flowers (no carnations, no roses, no pathetic bundles of ugly little cheap flowers) AND really good tamales and other food. Really good agua frescas, tamarindo and jamaica YUM.
Vegetarian tamales too. No sign -- just a couple of tables outside and the flowers.
They're open late - 11p. -
Good Magueritas!
-
I vote Maria's on 4th and Union- hands down bar none, maybe the best Mexican in Brooklyn
-
Subject: My Ranking
1. Marias
2. Cafe Mexicano (next door to Marias) best Tamales outside Mexico City
3. Los Politos Dos
4. La Taqueria
Mezcals and Sante Fe are the Taco Bell and Chilis of Brooklyn mexican. -
As much as I like those guys that run the place . . . the Cafe Mexicano tamales are pathetic. I was really really jonesing tamales a couple times and ate them there...
The good ones in Brooklyn are in Sunset Park, but the guy on Fourth Ave (10th/11th) has good ones closer by. -
Tacos New Mexico. 5th Avenue between 12th and 13th. Puts all those wannabe Mexicano places like Mezcals and Taqueria/s to shame. Try the steamed tongue with green sauce and the grilled cactus with lime. And the mole is great too.
-
I agree with JG and others Maria’s is the best! Café Mexicano next door is, also very good, but too small to be a destination spot.
After a concert at The Brooklyn Conservatory my wife and I went across the street to Santa Fe. I‘ve eaten at Santa Fe many times. Last Saturday will be my last visit. The food never was great, but it was acceptable. Saturday the chips and salsa were inedible. My wife’s fajita was boring, as was my quesadilla. Of course, starting with an inedible appetizer is hard to overcome. Plus the drinks were bad!
It’s too bad, because the décor, ambiance and service are all great.
We should have walked the two blocks to Y Canteen where our $50+ tip would have gotten us a fabulous Japanese dinner.
Has anyone had better luck with Santa Fe recently? Maybe it was an off night. -
Anybody tried Bar Reis' new Mexican menu on Fifth Ave in Le Slope?
-

Based on the confidence of your post I tried Maria's this weekend. Quite good! Interesting options I haven't seen on other menus. I had the poblano combo. Yum!
The guacamole is overpriced... but delicious, I must admit. -
I recently ate at a good place on 5th Ave around 18th st on the east side of the street. Sorry I didn't get the exact location or name but I thought it was good. It's a really small family run place, closer in style to Tex-Mex than Cal-Mex but not as heavy as Tex-Mex can often be.
There are a number of other places along this stretch of 5th ave from 17th to 23rd, haven't tried them all yet, has anyone else? -

I agree. Tasty comida and good jukebox for sampling some genuine Mexican music. Medusa likes the food there, too.
(The name was Tacos Nuevo Mexico--have they Anglicized?)
Cafe Mexicano food is more memorable than La Taqueria.
Maria's also memorable but fancy. -

Actually, I couldn't remember the name of the place so I looked it up on Yellopages.com and they gave me the anglicized name. Maybe I should have said La Lengua y Verde Salsa as well? -
JG has the order exactly right. Don't miss brunch at Marias, the pomegranate Margarita is awesome. Also the cafe con leche is a real treat.
Although I suspect most people use Los Pollitos Dos for take-out or delivery, eating in there is quite nice. Very intimate atmosphere. If you want to get the best chickens, pick them up in person. I sometimes get underdone birds when I order.
La Taqueria has superb food, but their delivery performance is abysmal in my experience. If you can't eat in, be prepared to wait twice as long as they quote you and possibly get an inaccurate order. I tip delivery folk very well, so that can't be the issue. -
cantina on 4th and 12th is pretty good.
they have margarita happy hour too!
and yes, maria's - especially for brunch.
there's a place in red hook called alma's that i haven't been to but i hear is really good. -
very eager to try some of the suggestions posted here.
as to the old standbys, la taqueria does what it does very well--cal-mex burritos and tacos, fresh tortillas, good choices, quickly.
santa fe is an over-priced, under-good margarita bar, bearing little resemblance to a mexican restaurant.
if you happen to be in the windsor terrace area, elora's, on ppw and 17th st., is very good, home-style mexican cooking, with excellent margaritas and an endless supply of fresh tortilla chips.
