Burrito Bar Kitchen--Good Review!

just to set the record straight
my wife and I went there last night to check it out
on the first page of the menu, very top:
Unlimited Chips and Salsa: $2.00
There is no way we can financially support a Mexican spot that charges money for chips and salsa, we'll wait to try it until they change that policy/menu... -
Our menu said that too, but I think that they had a change of heart. Just guessing, your mileage may vary.
-
We had lunch there today, and got free chips and salsa (included a second basket). The food was good but I didn't love it. I felt kind of meh about the whole experience.
BTW, they're going to have a brunch with included drinks, but it doesn't start til next week. -
I just ate there as well, and the chips and salsa come out as soon as you sit down. The food was OK - not the greatest, but nothing to complain about.
As for service, the waitress hovered overed me as I read the menu, and they asked me if I wanted chips refills twice during a quick meal. -

Oh that reminds me - while we were waiting (forever) the wait staff buzzing about kept hovering near us or looking over our table at a different waiter helping another table...and I mean right on top of us - it was VERY annoying. -
Thanks for the last three replies, it may be worth a shot after all
MAY be
the reviews of the food besides the chips sounds 'meh' -

My wife and I went on Friday, and based on our first experience there I would second the "meh". We sat at the bar while waiting for a table, where chips and salsa were offered free but only chips were brought. We both got non-frozen margaritas, which were totally weak, a major no-no as far as I'm concerned, especially for a place that puts "bar" before "kitchen" in its name! The TVs are actually fairly unobtrusive and the overall vibe was far less frat-boy than I thought. When I was there (admittedly quite early for a Friday dinner), the crowd was mostly the Park Slope family set.

At the table, chips and salsa would have been $2. My wife and I both got burritos. Mine was with grilled steak, hers was with beef and red sauce. The presentation was nice (see below), but the burritos could definitely be better. They weren't very flavorful, requiring large amounts of hot sauce just to make them palatable. I was kind of tired of it before I was halfway done, and they weren't that big. That said, the burritos are only one part of the menu (although a major part for a place that calls itself "Burrito bar & Kitchen"). Other items looked like they had potential, such as the seafood enchilada. I saw someone eating the mini-burger plate (essentially 6 White Castle-style sliders), which is an odd thing to order at a (sort of) Mexican restaurant, but it didn't look bad.
Overall: atmosphere not as annoying as I expected, drinks sucked, food mediocre, but I'll probably give them one more chance to win me over.

It does seem like they're open to improvements, considering that we were all complaining about the chips and they're now trying to press multiple free orders of chips on everybody...

They still haven't "improved" the sign though! -
I ate there yesterday with my fiance and a friend.
Food - average to good, not great. I had the beef burrito w/ red sauce (so did my fiance). Not much flavor at all, but it was filling. My friend had a veggie burrito, which he seemed to enjoy, but he was frequently putting hot sauce on it.
Drinks - I had a margarita, on the rocks with salt. VERY light on the to-kill-ya, which annoys the hell out of me. My friend had a frozen margarita (ugh) and said it had little flavor. My fiance had a beer, which is hard to screw up, but they did by charging $6 for the pint.
Atmosphere - I could take it or leave it. It wasn't annoying, but it didn't impress me, either. Felt a little "cold".
Service - We had a very nice waitress - no complaints there.
Price - The burritos cost about what I would expect for a sit down restaurant. The drinks are too expensive for the neighborhood.
I wrote quite a bit on the comment card, even telling them that I heard of the place from dailyheights.com. I said, more flavor in the burrito, more tequila in the margaritas, less Elton John Music, and more pink chandaliers.
Just my opinion. -
Tried it last night. The menu offers soy cheese and sour cream, but they didn't have any last night. The enchiladas w/ roasted veggies were okay. Our margaritas on the rocks were $5... not sure if there was a happy hour but this seemed cheap (though, they were weak). We got a free basket of chips and salsa. They didn't bring out a 2nd, but we didn't ask either. Our server looked at our menus when we ordered... obviously not familiar with it yet (but, it was annoying b/c i felt like he didn't actualy trust that what i was ordering was actually on the menu).
Another so-so Mexican restaurant. La Taqueria is still my favorite, but this place will do when I get the craving. -
We went last night, as well. It has a nice enough vibe and the staff was very friendly, but very very slow. They clearly haven't gotten the kitchen together. The food was just fine. Not great and not awful. Just fine. Not sure if we will go back.

Went on Saturday. Good sangria, decent nachos, cute and funny bartender.

Nice place you got there, but $6 for a beer? Really? You do know that Tecate is the mexican version of PBR, right (i.e. decent, cheap, embraced by hipsters)? Is your overhead really so bad that you have to charge $5 for a beer you serve in a can? Seriously, what prompted you to set your drink prices so high? -

Heh Greg,
Thanks for the offer for a free whatever thru Oct 8, but heh dude, YOUR SIGN HAS GOT TO GO! Please please please rethink this blundering mistake. it's garish and totally uncessary - we're all gonna find you and pass the word around, seriously.
btw, my two experiences have been just fine - 'cept for the over-zealous waitress who didn't bother to write my order down and so I didn't get the cheese I requested on my turkey burger. -
This is cool. Margarita night this week, anyone?

so... ive been waiting to check this place out, and went there last night with my wife, and heres the verdict:
we gave it a solid "eh". 5.5/10.
not to diss it, but it seems to be trying really hard to be a "hip spot" (which must be working- it was packed), but its a shame the food was a little off. i mean, its nice, but it seems to be more geared to the two huge flat tv's, the bar, and stuff.
i had the chiles rellenos (which was more like "chile relleno"), which would have been at least a tad better if they had bothered to remove that chunk of pepper-core/seeds that got lodged in between my molars as i ate. served with two folded-up tortillas what were soggy and stuck to the plate thanks to the tomato sauce on the dish. there was a tad of rice and beans, and the rice appeared to be minute-rice with too much oil/butter.
wife had fish tacos... saying this would be the true test, as if it could appeal to her SF-trained mexican tastebuds, it would pass. she was a tad nonplussed when she recieved two inverted soft tortillas filled with overcooked mahimahi and garnished with mustard (?!) , and a wad of mesculun with diced mangoes. she didnt finish her dish.
i was excited to see they have dos equis on tap... but that faded after it arrived flat, with a wilted lime wedge floating in it.
i think our final verdict was "well, they just opened. perhaps we'll check back in in a couple of months when the menu/cooking equalizes a bit"
that being said, their prices are ok. their styling is a bit frou-frou for me, as i dont generally go out to a "burrito joint" expecting to be served on festive terracotta plates, crate-and-barrel glasses and a menu chock-full of the most hackneyed crazy fonts and meximerican speak ive ever seen. i expect something more like a foil-wrapped burrito thats bursting with flavour (their burritos looked small and drowned in sauce).
i dunno, im gonna have to differ from the above commenter that seems to think this place is the epitome of "tex-mex". i thought it was trying-to-hard-to-be-hip new yorkified mexican fast food at best.
and its overpriced. -
Subject: it was awful
1) $40 for a pitcher of margaritas
2) The burritos are not burritos - they are WRAPS. And they are not Mission Style (as the cheesy, poorly written English menu claims they are from San Francisco)- they are filled with Uncle Ben's rice, and NO pico de gallo. Really bad.
3) The staff is sweet but totally amatuer
4) The beans were CANNED refried beans and the steak was gummy and un-chewable.
I am shocked that people are streaming in here and spending $10 for a burrito when you can get 100% better everything down the street at La Taqueria. -
Subject: Re: it was awful
re: canned beans and uncle ben's rice... yeah, i gotta agree. i was gonna mention that more, but i thought maybe i had said my fair share enough already 8)
i concur, though. -
There's definitely lots of room for improvement, but they did just open and "Greg" did make a nice gesture toward us. There's no need for hating on the place (except for that horrible sign)...yet. I'm hoping they may still get better. I'll find out when I use my $10 off coupon (and my free margarita coupon, which I plan to use concurrently). Anyone up for lunch next week?
-
Got my free drink last night and Greg came over to introduce himself and thank me for coming.
