Shelter Suggestions-Photo Update: YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE CUTE!
Subject: Shelter Suggestions-Photo Update: YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE CUTE!
My wife, kind soul, has found a stray cat that needs a home and some TLC (looks as if the cat recently went through a bout of ringworm, skinny) that we just can't provide (we already have two cats, etc.). Can anybody provide a home for her or suggest a shelter where she can stay 'til she finds a home?Oh, she (I keep saying "she" but I don't know if the cat is a she) is all black, medium-length hair (a little more than an inch long) and very affectionate, and seems to be pretty laid-back. I can post a pic when I get home a little later.
Thanks ladies and gents!

Okay...
Well, here's the story thus far... the cat is friendly, but just uneasy enough to not let me check it out properly- I can't get a look at the 'quipment, so I'm still assuming that it's a girl. Her hair is pretty thin and soft, and there are a few knots here and there. No sign of fleas just yet, but I haven't had full access to her underside. Looks like she's gettin' over ringworm- little patches of healing are evident...
Now, are you ready for it?! No? Okay... I'll give you a second...
okay...
Either the cat is really constipated, or it's very pregnant. If not for the very solid, very round belly, she'd be rail thin.
We're going to give her what love we can, but we need to figure out what to do with her... fast. -
I'd recommend taking the cat over to Hope Veterinary Clinic on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond. I'm no expert, but it seem as if they have thinned out their population of strays for adoption in the front of the clinic so this might be a good time to bring her (or him?) over.
And--again, I'm not an expert--but they also name their strays cool names. Like Grace Jones and Corey Haim. -
Yeah, that's actually where we take our cats, but my wife talked to them today and they said that they "didn't think that [they] were taking any." That was before the pregnant news...
-
Here she is...
Yeah, she's stayin' in one of our bathrooms for now.
-
Man, is she/he cute! Too bad I will cough up a lung if she lived with me...
And as far as the cat goes, cute city!
Seriously, what about these fine folks. They would seem to have an inside track on the stray cat scene:

told my friend.
also, consider making a poster and putting it up at the co-op. you do NOT have to be a member to put up a poster... when you go in, walk to the door straight ahead (past the lockers) and there will be stairs, the postings are all there and obvious. or maybe you already know this!
good luck & let us know what happens to her!! -

Is there a poster-putting-up schedule?
Wouldn't want to get yelled at for putting it up too early...
 -
If you haven't already, check with Animal Kind veterinary hospital. They may be able to help find it a home and, as sad as this may sound, they may recommend doing a spay/abortion. There are so many unwanted cats it may be the most humane thing.
Other organizations to try:
Brooklyn Animal Foster Network
Slope Street Cats
Animal Haven
Fifth Avenue Cat Clinic: 718.398.1187
Good luck, and bless you for taking her in! -

just don't look anyone in the eye! and make sure to say "EXCUSE ME" really loud, at unnecessary times, & before anyone else!!

My wife talked to the people at Hope, they said that it's kitten season, and it's not likely that we'll find a shelter with the space to take her (soon to be them) in. They said that our energy might be better spent by looking for adopters directly.
As for Cat, she's doing well. Looks like the new, cleaner environment has given her a chance to get ahead of the hygiene curve- she's lookin' cleaner, silkier. She's eating really well, none of the wait-and-see-if-something-better-comes-along fussiness that our other cats possess. We'll keep her comfy as can be and take it a step at a time.
Keep spreadin' the word about Cat, and if it goes much longer, get people thinkin' about kittens! -
oh, craigslist is where a bunch of my friends have gotten cats in the past... especially when they are looking for a full grow cat & want to avoid the stress of the shelter while still taking in a stray!
best of luck! Cat will find a loving home!! -
Hm. I can't tell if that's the same cat we named Window or not...it looks a LOT like her, but I remember her fur being pretty stiff and short to the touch. Maybe she was just really dirty.
In any case, bless you indeed, and good luck! For my part, I'll spread the word around work about her. -
where did your wife find the cat? i've been looking for a home for a gorgeous, sweet, stray black cat on my block (prospect place between franklin and classon). didn't see her this morning.
the cat i'm talking about was very pregnant earlier in the summer. she also does seem to have a round belly. she meows a lot, with a sweet little voice.
i would have taken her in, but i have a cat of my own and no money to get this sweetie to the vet. i've been bringing her food and giving her pets.
if it's her, good on you! i hope you find a place for her. if it's not her...anyone want a sweet cat? -
aww! she's gorgeous! if I weren't currently in possession of two cats I'd be all over her! good luck!

HA! I bet it's the same cat. We fed/watered her and tried to find her a shelter too but were not having much luck, and then she disappeared...sounds like she just moved a block over. If it IS the same cat, she used to have an owner in the building next door to ours on Park Place, but they abandoned her when they moved (EVIL!). Probably why she's so well socialized, though.

Anyway, I also wanted to suggest maybe posting her on www.catster.com. They have a box you can check marked "adoptable", and I'm sure people search on it. Worth a shot for the ten minutes it would take to make her a page. -

Yup- that's her. My wife couldn't pass by her twice. -
definitely looks like her. i called her ella, because my cat's named satchmo and the two of them would make quite a duet.
there are also two (?) tiny kittens running around my block. i haven't gotten them to come near me, though. and there's a dead cat
at the park place shuttle station. i think the kittens' mom. called 311 to have her taken away. -

Sad! Are they grey and white? There's a cat that's been having litter after litter in our back garden (behind the church on Prospect) but they never come near us.

Subject: 3 topics: Hope Vet/Cat with Kittens/Dead Cat witnessed
Too bad re: HOPE Vet on Atlantic not being able to take the cat even tho' Grace Jones the aforementioned cat died (somewhat mysteriously) and I think they are overextended there. I have mixed reaction to them based on an experience I had there -- even tho' I think they have good intentions and what they *try* to do (find homes for cats, take cats in on 'death row' from CACC) is admirable.
I say you are doing great talking it up here... so great that two people on this board were looking out for this cat! thanks for taking care and it is sort of 'evil' that the people left her.
-- ocean poet can you tell how the cat that is dead at the park place shuttle station died? um... can't someone else bury the cat somewhere vs. just having her dumped in the garbage or whatever they do...? That seems a bit sad to me. -
On our old block, there was a cat that seemed to have litters pretty regularly (We think that that's where our first cat, Jack, came from) but she was captured, spayed and returned to the block with clipped ears. We overheard some neighbors talking about it, saying that it was some feral cat program... anybody have a little more info on this? My old block only had one or two of 'em, but the new 'hood certainly seems to need something like this!
-
i'm not sure how the cat died. she's decomposing... she's by the ramp on the prospect place side of the station.
yes, the kittens are gray and white. i see them near the ramp, which is why i think the dead cat is their mother.
this summer, my boyfriend and i were petting a super-pregnant gray and white cat. a woman told us the cat was hers and that she didn't know (and didn't seem to care) what she would do with the kittens. i'm so MAD. one of the shelters i called says that it costs only $25 to get a low-cost spay/neuter.
nybt, so you know, i called BARC, Slope Street Cats, Kings Highway Cat Rescue, and e-mailed WillyB Cats and PurrBark. i either got no answer or rescuers told me they were full up.
i was told by Slope Street Cats (they rely on fosterers, fyi) that some vets will take kittens if you pay a litter fee. they will put them up for adoption through the vet office. i was also told it's a good idea to try and pick up the kittens, so you can see if they're feral or not (most kittens will let you pick them up. they're on their way to feral if you can't touch them). if they're feral, they can't be adopted. Slope Street has lots of info. about how to take care of a feral cat colony. if you're interested.[/b] -

Slope Street Cats is such a program (known as TNR), and they occasionally conduct workshops (at the dreaded Food Coop!
) to train people to do TNR. I would love to get involved in (or start) something like this in PH. -
Another option you might want to consider is contacting Robert at the Socialtees Rescue Center. He's this guy who runs an animal rescue out of his screenprinting shop in the East Village; he posts on the Craigslist pets section quite a bit. Any animals he takes in get spayed/neutered and get their shots and any other medical issues addressed before he finds homes for them.
Right now there's some discussion going on about him there -- some dumbass posted griping about his adoption fee (which goes to paying for food, spaying/neutering, and vaccinations) and several people have spoken up in his defense, including myself. I can vouch for him -- I adopted a kitten from him a couple of years ago and she's awesome and was well cared for while he had her.
Anyway, he might be willing to take this kitty in or find a foster home for her if you can't. His number is 212-614 9653. -

Trap-Neuter-Return: How to Manage a Feral Cat Colony
This is something that my block could use. I regularly hear cat fights, and I see quite a few males marking the bushes in my back yard. Block Association meeting is coming up soon, I'll have to bring it up if I can make it there. -

Oh my god, that cat belongs to someone??? We've been watching litter after litter of her kittens grow and frolic in the back garden (which we do not have access to) for two years now. I just assumed she had to be a stray...that's CRIMINAL that the cat exponentially increasing the feral population in our hood has an owner! I wish you could report people for that.
