you're right... i'd never make a good reporter. they seem to be gone now.
...seems to be further over into Crown Heights now. -
So it's safe for me to leave work?
-
They were weird. Especially since they came around at about the time I wanted to check out that new "Ginseng Fern" film and while I was checking out the sigange a third 'copter joined the two already there.
Odd to see in the day, but over here in Boerum Hill--and nearby areas--it's quite common to see the police helcopters hovering over the Wycoff Garden's vicinity. But that's usually at night... -
I just got a great deal on a used Sikorsky S-92. Online advertising really does work.

I just purchased a used BELL 206L-1 turbine helicopter. I asked the guys at the heliport to paint it lime green and write "Daily Height" on the side in magenta. Wave when you see me flying by.

Someone should check the stairwell of the Eastern Parkway 2/3 - I doubt the police have.
-
nuh-uh. I'm not gonna. You first. No backs!
-
at the risk of repeating...
I was just there, hanging out with the crowd on St. John. According to one fellow there, the police had earlier been charging down into basements with their rifles drawn. Serious. I stayed until they got a dog out (who looked very excited by the whole propect (no pun intended)) and who (which?) led them off onto Washington (and, one assumes, beyond). The whole scene had calmed down a bunch, so it seemed silly to stand around watching the police stand around.
cheers -
Maybe some dude forgot to clean up after his dog. Finally, we are seeing due force for this transgression.

well it probably is getting to be about dinner time for the pooch. and they just LOVE the taste of criminal hiney you know. -
I knew watching TV would help some day!
Just watched CBS 2's local news and here's the summary of what happened:
- The smashed up car is the suspect's car.
- Police engaged that car in a chase that began on the FDR drive in Manhattan, continued on the Brooklyn Bridge, then up Flastbush, and finally ended on Saint John's Place. Why the chase started? No idea.
- Whoever was in the car ditched it exactly where it is parked right now and is running around on foot in the neighborhood.
- Police are STILL searching for the guy as of right now (6:15pm-isg).
- Police are also looking up registration info to find out who the owner of the car is.
Also, just looked over a few pictures I took while I was in the 'hood and most of the helicopters--except for one--were local news 'copters. No 'Apocalypse Now' happening.
Lucky the ghetto poodle, we need you! -

At 5pm-ish when I was out there, there were three clearly-marked NYPD helicopters. -
Okay, I've just gotten the scoop. According to two sources, a man in an '89 Honda nearly hit a police office on a motorcycle in Manhattan and sideswiped another vehicle and refused to stop. He was chased by police officers from Manhattan, over the Brooklyn Bridge, and drove to Prospect Heights where he fled the car. One witness reported seeing him flee in flip-flops. He is "in the wind" at this time. The car remains on St. Johns between Washington & Underhill, where it is being dusted for prints at this time. No injuries have been reported.

Whoops, there it is.
Time for me to upgrade to the Nikon Coolpix 8800! -

The NYPD can't catch a guy in flip flops? yikes. -

DUDE! They couldn't catch a guy fleeing in flip-flops? That is pathetic!

Isn't that Old Navy's disaster evacuation plan? -
Rats, someone beat me to the punch. I was on the scene while Lou Young was reporting. Another "eye witness" who had spoken to a police officer gave me the same info before the CBS report.
And yes, I did mean that no officers were raiding buildings while I was there. Thank you for clarifying that. -
Please, good journalists, if you use any of this info, same rules as always: please be sure to credit our humble neighborhood blog.

let me get this straight...they did a car chase in nyc (which are illegal are they not?) because someone sideswiped another car after nearly hitting a cop? no one was injured in the accident itself, but the potential for injury to others from a car chase is so great, i'm surprised they took off after him.
-
sigh. i live at this corner and my building is kind of sketchy, which is to say i have had a couple unfortunate police-related situations, which is to say that a dude who sold narcotics used to live in my apartment and the warrant squad had come looking for him (at 7am, no less). the next building is way worse, though - people are peeing into the lightwell and throwing garbage out of their windows all the time. you can't get to any other roofs from ours, though, so i hope it wasn't our stairwell they were charging up.
Carnivore wrote: [quote=mc]They aren't raiding any of the buildings, though.
They're full of shit. One of the girls at the corner of Sterling and Underhill said a bunch of cops were charging up the stairs of her building with their guns drawn. Sorry I didn't get the building number. -
According to CBS news, the suspect has been caught and has been taken into custody.
You can all come home now. -

Hey There...
I am a journalist...I got the tip from one of my sources on the block... 8) -
Why in the hell would car chases be illegal? "Oh damn, the criminal got in a car. Maybe next time..." They are called off because of conditions: pedestrians, crowds, roads, motorcyclists (being chased have a tendency to splatter themselfs and others.) They are not illegal.
I'm as liberal as it gets, but sometimes the "down with the cops" attitude of this forum blows me away. I grew up in the now "pro-ho" area, and without them, 90% of the people on this board wouldn't be here.
No offense to anyone, but christ. -
actually, dear little anonymous guest...it was a cop who told me this, and it was because of the massive safety and liability concerns. whether or not this is actually the law, i don't know, i was asking a rhetorical question. but you don't see many cop car chases in nyc now do you?
-
Dear little named-after-a-frying-pan,
That is not the law. See post above as to why they're called off. You don't see many because there are lots of cops, plenty of places to block off a 'runner,' and too much traffic for said 'runner' to get far. -
