Addressing Noisy Neighbors — Brooklynian

Addressing Noisy Neighbors

It's not the neighbors per se but the doors to their apartments. In my building our apartment doors slam shut fast if you don't catch it and help it close slowly. Unfortunately at least two of my neighbors leave before my alarm goes off in the morning, and being the light sleeper that I am, I jolt awake and well, sleep is pretty much forgone at that point. Actually it's really quite loud and I can't imagine that others aren't woken by this as well. It usually happens at around 6am and 7am, so it's not late morning or mid-day when the whole world should be up - although it'd be annoying then as well.

How do I address my neighbors about this? It's a small building but I very rarely pass anybody in the hall/stairs. I thought about leaving a note, but I can't be exactly sure which apartments are the culprit. I don't want to be a nudge but ever since I stopped using the air conditioner overnight my sleep is cut short more than an hour in the morning. What's the nicest way I can handle this without making enemies and getting result I need?

  • I'd leave a very polite note in the hallway next to the mailboxes, addressed to everyone, explaining the problem. You might also ask your super or landlord to adjust the doors, most closing mechanisms are adjustable. If they're closing that fast and hard it could be a danger to small fingers. Good Luck!

I agree with the landlord route. They have things that can slow down the door and also lessen the noise when it shuts.
  • i just wish my neighbors would stop yelling "motherfucka" at each other at all hours of the day & night...
  • Do you mean the doors to the street or doors to the apartments. If its the doors to the street they are definately adjustable and you dont even need to wait for the landlord, use a flat head screwdriver and turn the screws on the mechanism a quarter turn at ta time and try the door. There should be two screws, on adjust how fast the door closes and the other adjusts the compensation of the door right before it shuts to slow it down. Just amke sure it closes hard enough so that the latch catches even if the door is no opened fully.

The door to the street slams too but I'm on the top floor so it's not too bad. Plus, I want it to slam shut otherwise it doesn't lock properly. It's the individual apartment doors that slam and then rattle and reverberate up through the stairwell. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.

I drafted a friendly note to post in the foyer but I fear I'm just going to come off as some annoying shithead who should be a white noise machine! And naturally, as per usually, I cannot reach the property manager. Tried 3 times already today. No point in leaving voicemail because he never calls back.
