PH to Newark and back again?

Is it cheaper (tolls and tip included) to take a taxi or car service to Newark airport (EWR)? Are you expected to cover tolls both ways? And are there times (i.e. rush hour) when it's faster to take the PATH train/subway from Penn Station?

Comments

  • i've never taken a taxi to or from EWR.

the nj transit train from penn station is sooooo easy though. it's only about $20 round trip and the trains leave very regularly and the ride is only about 20-25 minutes from penn station. it's the second stop. then the transfer to the air train is free with your nj transit ticket and takes only 5 minutes to get to your terminal!
  • You can just take the 2/3 to Park Place and take the Path to Newark-Penn Station. There you can transfer to the Air Train. Way faster -- and cheaper! -- than going all the way to Penn Station.

oh wow! that's good to know for the future! thanks!
do you know how much tix are by any chance?
  • What's the Path? $1.50-$2? And the Air Train might be $5.
  • How fast is fast? And how late does the Air Train run?
  • I am very incredibly wildly lazy and take arecibo. it's usually fast and cheap. like 20-30 minutes.
  • I don't know what that is :(

Are you certain you can get the Air Train at Newark-Penn? When I did that trip we had to take NJ Transit one stop to the Airport and then the Air Train - and the NJ Transit train was very expensive $11 maybe?

You don't get the Air Train at Penn Station. You need to take a NJT train from Newark one stop (or, alternatively, two stops from New York Penn station) to the Newark Airport stop where you can access the Air Train.

Important to note: most, but not all, NJT trains will stop at the Newark Airport stop. So make sure before you get on the NJT train that it is, in fact, going to make a stop at Newark airport.

Also, I believe the fare is closer to $11.00 (from New York Penn Station), but that that is a round-trip fare including the train from Penn to Newark. Also, make sure you buy your ticket before you get on the NJT train (there are a lot of vending booths in Penn Station) because they will charge you a penalty if you buy it on the train.

Sooo, to answer your question, Yes, it is cheaper (and not as complicated as I have made it seem).
  • Says the Airtrain site:
Connect to AirTrain from local and regional train service
There are a few ways to get to AirTrain from Downtown Manhattan. Here are the most direct routes: • Take PATH from the 23rd, 14th, 9th, Christopher Street, or World Trade Center station to Newark Penn Station.
    • At Newark Penn Station, transfer to a NJ TRANSIT train to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. Not every train stops at the airport, so be sure to refer to a NJ TRANSIT schedule.
    Or, • Take the New York City Transit sunways 1, 2, 3, 9, A, C or E to 34th Street/New York Penn Station.
    • At New York Penn Station, take either a NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak® train to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. Not every train stops at the airport, so be sure to refer to a NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak schedule.
There's an old post on the blog where Andy made the trip a few months ago.
  • there is also an airport shuttle bus for $10 bus from 34th street.. really quick! but then again you have to also get to 34th street! :)

    Damn, I can't get a break!
  • I was told once by one of the conductors that you can buy a NJT ticket to elizabeth but get off at the airport stop. You then have to pay for the airtrain separately but it comes out cheaper than buying the $11 ticket that includes both. I haven't tried it myself but I think the airtrain ticket is $5 and the trip to elizabeth is only $2-3.
  • the monorail @ EWR is free. airtrain from jamaica to JFK is $5.
  • Being a former dispatcher for a Park Slope based car service I can tell you on full authority that you must pay tolls for both ways if you take the Verrazzano bridge to Newark Airport. One way, if you take the Holland tunnel. Personally, I'd fly out of JFK if possible. The airport is huge and has much less air traffic then EWR and LGA. Unlike EWR and LGA you have several options of getting to JFK and you don't have to deal with stagnating delays on the BQE or SIE or Canal street/the Holland tunnel.
  • I work in Newark. take the 2/3 to Park Place and walk to the PATH trains. 22 minutes to Newark Penn Station. My commute has been as little as 40 minutes on a really good day. As for getting to EWR, I think they have built in the cost to the model and hit you for the difference on the NJT fare to EWR and the monorail.

you can also catch a shuttle at church street downtown manhattan - right near the 2/3 park place stop.

  • If you take a car service from Prospect Heights, you should be prepared for the driver to get lost. This happened to me both times that I've taken a car.

I tend to avoid EWR when I can (except when forced to take it by New Jersey-based Hungarian folk musicians, but that's another story...).
