Alternate Side of the street parking — Brooklynian

Alternate Side of the street parking

Every now and then I'm around on a weekday and I have to do the "Alternate side shuffle" - If wasn’t lucky enough to get a spot on the good side. And every time I go out to move my car after the no parking period has ended (like 15 minutes after mind you), almost all of the spots are already gone! I cant imaging everyday having to deal with the alternate side rules. Don’t you people have anything better to do? and why do you own a car? What’s the point?

  • Having just moved from NJ I still drive to work there every day and haven't been caught in the shuffle. Although I stayed for a weekend with my brother before moved and got not one but two tickets within 20 minutes of each other. ARGHHH.

But, I'm job huntin NY and don't look forward to shuffling my car across the street every day. I just may have to abandon it or give in and pay for a garage. My friend in Astoria doesn't have alternate side of the street parking. Must be nice.
  • Subject: Got Towed This Week!

A-S-S parking sucks! I got towed last week (Total: $300 to get the car out) because they said I was parked to close to the bus zone...And with the rising costs of gas, its become too expensive to drive...Thankfully, my BF got a parking spot for me up the street in his bldg. and I keep my car there most of the week...use it basically on the weekends...I have a car because I love going to COSTCO, Home Depot, Loew's, and I drive to NJ on Sundays for church...Also, having a car make Girls Night Out so much more fun...Also, it beats the hell out of walking to the train in high heels...And my dog loves riding in the car, too...But, I admit, sometimes I yearn for the days when I didn't have a car....I have mixed feelings on this one....

A-S=S depends on the Parking Officer too. Some allow double park leeway. Others will drill you for moving too early. That's $75 IIRC. A-S-S is also cynical as people who normally treat you nice on the street will cut you deep and wide to move their cars before you. A guy on Sterling has 4 cars. 4! How the fuck do you even afford that shit? I asked him if he was moving them for people and he said, no, he has 4 cars and told me to get bent.
  • Yeah I know people - single people - who have more than one car (not in BK mind you) and their reasons are ridiculous. Like I don't like to drive that car in the winter, or I like to use that car when I go shopping. WTF. When I was in college each residence got X number of residential street parking permits. I think that would be a good idea. Although I'll probably bite my tongue for saying that. What I would give for a driveway or parking lot!
  • I have a car that I move constantly. I own it because I run a company in upstate New York, and need a car when I am there and to get there. It also comes with other conveniences, which should be obvious. I park on the street, because that is where cars go. I find the original rant a little annoying.

I will say, though, that the parking is what kept me from moving to Brooklyn sooner.

    ummmm...

    EDIT: size
  • Okay fine... :D
  • I know it is a pain in the neck - its the only way to get the streets clean. I do know that other neighborhoods have ASS only two days a week. I wonder why we have 4?

Just FYI - there are a few people on my block who pay my mother-in-law $20 bucks a week to move their cars. Maybe you can find someone like that on your block.
  • My old neighborhood in Queens was twice a week as well. Four times is a bit frustrating. I lived for a while in a neighborhood where the residents took responsibility for the street cleaning, which was great.

I've heard that this has to do with how clean the streets are, i.e. how much cleaning they need. If people stopped throwing trash on the street and cleaned up better after their dogs (*cough* guy that Quig saw *cough*), we'd eventually be put on a different schedule.

I thought so also but the neighborhood I was talking about is Boro Park and I have to say it was A LOT dirtier than here. I wonder what it take to get it changed.

Good question. I only think that the poorer neighborhoods in Brooklyn have it four days a week. Draw your own conclusions as to why.

When I worked in Manhattan I would always try and skip out early on a Monday so that I could try and park my car just across Flatbush Ave. If I got a space there I was golden for the whole week.

As it is, I try and park as close to home as possible but it's been getting harder the more PH gentrifies and the more cars there are here. I will now park it as far down as Pacific if I have to. Ain't no big thing.
