  • it's called Elios and it's terrific..had both b'fast and dinner. Owners are Greek and they have affordable b'fast menu (no fancy brunch stuff) and a simple yet delicious Greek dinner menu. I highly recommend!

They currently only accept cash but will accept credit soon they say.
  • That's not a greek menu. And it should be referred to as a Hellenic restaurant. Greeks for tourists and Hellenic is for those that respect the culture.
Hellenic food is anything, but what those frauds serve (Pita with chicken and lettuce). It's a menu for to appeal to the local obsession with diverse dining. A Hellenic salad is referred to as a Horiatiko and it has the simple ingredients of tomato, onion, cucumber, feta, salt, oil and a tad of vinegar
  • I've never heard anybody call a Greek restaurant "Hellenic."
  • On the topic of restaurants on the Slope side of the road . . .
Miriam's on 5th Ave a couple blocks in from Flatbush is pretty great. Deliciously subtle middle eastern, nice room and not mad expensive.

    It's apropos, isn't it?
  • Subject: elios--nothing to cross flatbush for

haven't had any of the greek (or hellenic, if you prefer) food, but...

had brunch there last weekend--wasn't impressed. the home fries weren't browned, barely even cooked, with a scattering of almost raw peppers. poached eggs were okay, but served on top of unbuttered, soft slices of what i imagine was supposed to be toast. coffee was some strange dark thick bitter liquid.

nothing to cross flatbush for. go to tom's.
  • I tried that Greek-slash-Hellenic place the other night, and although it was tasty, the prices and the menu didn't compare to what you can get in Greek restaurants in Astoria, Queens (I lived there for years).

I wish that the prices at this place were a little less steep and that the lighting were better (it's a little bright and sterile in there). But the grilled octopus was really delicious, as was the calamata olive mashed potatoes.

Cool. I always use grilled octopus as one of my barometers of the quality of a Greek restaurant, along with basics like moussaka, skordalia, etc. I'm definitely planning on trying this place.
  • let it be known that this "Hellenic" restaurant does serve fare other than a chicken souvlaki. They've got a tasty bifteki (ground sirloin), lamb and salmon wrapped in fillo. As with any new restaurant, they're trying to work the kinks out and have a limited menu for now. I went there for dinner with a few friends and a bottle of wine...and with a s-load of shared apps and entrees, my portion came to 16 bucks. Delicious food and a reasonable price, I'll take it! Welcome to the neighborhood Elios!
  • I *love* greek food, and can't wait to try this place. Thanks for posting this, I haven't been by that corner in a while, and didn't know about it. :D
  • I'll wait until I hear what Carnivore has to say about it.
  • grilled octopus!

we ate at Miriam's again on Fifth Ave...
great Herb Salad with perfect grilled octopus
  • The grilled octopus at Elios is delish..as are a number of the other dishes. I go there at least three times a week for dinner. They use only organic chicken and their salad dressing is great. What's even better, is that they don't have a liquor license. I've gone with friends, brought some wine and you feel like you're having a real dining experience without the Fifth Avenue pricetag.
  • I stopped by when they first opened, and they were so cocky it was a turn-off. I mentioned that I had moved from Astoria, and they said that the Greek restaurants out there were trashy and fake. They didn't make me want to give them my money.
