Off-street parking — Brooklynian

Off-street parking

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I recently moved into the neighborhood and am looking to find some off-street parking so as to avoid the alternate side shuffle. Can anyone recommend lots/garages to check for available space? (If you have contact info as well, that would be appreciated, as I know some lots don't post it.)

Thanks very much,

  • I use the place on underhill between St. Marks and Prospect. The guys are pretty nice and some have been there a long time, its nice to see the same faces.

The guy you want to talk to is usually there in the mornings. Tell him #1 sent you

There's also a garage on St. Marks between Vanderbilt & Underhill. I've heard that it's run by the same people as the place mentioned on Underhill.
  • Thanks very much. Went to Underhill. Only a couple spaces left, so if you're also looking, go now!

does anyone know if the St Marks Parking Lot (btwn Wash & Underhill) raised the rates for EVERYone across the board earlier this year - old-timers and newbies? lots of cars left after the price hike and I wonder if there's a better deal around than paying Manhattan prices to park your car OUTside.
  • Not to sound too consipatorial, but it might have to do with Ratner's Atlantic Yards. I think that one of the things they measure in the environmental impact study is the availability of off-street parking. So, if there is more off-street parking available, it would look good for Ratner. When I asked the people who run the lot why the price went up (from 175 to 250) they said the taxes had been raised. It was nowhere near the time when property tzx assessments were announced, and factoring in other costs, the taxes would have to go up tremendously for this to be true.

On the other hand, the owners could simply be anticipating an influx of cars from all the new construction in the neighborhood.
  • There's an indoor garage on St Johns between Classon and Franklin

Or the loss of spots to dumpsters and cranes.
  • I voiuch for Bobby Car Park on Underhill between Prospect and St. Marks.

Talk to John, he is the manager. Their # is 718-783-5113. Good luck!
  • Do you guys have any sense of whether any of these places would be safe for a van chock full o' musical equipment? A friend of mine is going to be in town in a few weeks with his band, and he wants to stay a couple of days extra but can only do so if he can find a place to lock up the van where their guitars and whatnot won't get stolen.

    I'd never risk it.

if you can just wait for about 12-24 more months I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to see gas prices above $5/gallon, the sudden disappearance of many of the cars in the neighborhood that everyone thought they just "had to have", and lots of newly-available garage parking.
