Van Helsing Vandals strike!
Sarah from the Slope sent in this shot of the which has been "improved" by local movie buffs:
"This was sent to me from my husband's cell phone, and I'm forwarding it to you because I love your site (even though I actually live in the North Slope). I guess some artist-poets-vandals finally got tired of wondering when "Man on Fire" and "Van Helsing" would actually close... though I think the poet-vandals must have added some letters of their own, right? Or am I mis-remembering the movies that were on there before?"

Subject: American Apparel in Flatbush Pavillion
If you look on the inside, it looks like an American Apparel is opening up there. Could be part of their hipster marketing campaign. I was sad to see Van Helsing and Man on Fire close though. -

Actually, the combined obvservational strength of the mighty Daily Heights team reported this back in September 5, 2005.

For the sake of setting the record straight, I do know that the latest marquis sign has nothing to do with American Apparel - I can't speak to the previous two. It's also worth noting that the latest one used all of the letters whereas the earlier ones did not...

Looks like someone is playing Scrabble! -
Whoever the anagram happy vandals are, may I humbly suggest that they use:

Subject: American Apparel ?
A few months ago, someone at the gym next door told me that they [the gym] had bought the theater building & were going to put in a swimming pool... I'm sure that there is room for both, but now i'm wondering if this was just a dream for them rather than reality. anyone know more? -

We reported that here on DailyHeights.com, and a few days later, the Daily News ran a story on it. They were saying that they would lease the space and put in individual wave pools, rather than a large common pool. -
This is a fun game
MAN OF NINE GROINS MARVELS IF HE HAVIN LAGER
there'd actually be two extra N's left over, but they can take those down I guess. Maybe they can work out some sort of cross promotional deal with Mooney's, I've heard they're really trying to reach out to the nine-groined market. -

I'd bet a body part that American Apparel has something to do with this.

Oh god if that's true it's like the lamest and worst thing in the world and my faith in humanity will evaporate.
Sorry, I just hate that stupid store. Although maybe I'll shop there a lot, because I want to spend 25 dollars on t shirt that looks and feels like it costs 2. -

We'll have to do with "AMERIGAN AHVEREL SHOGS".
I'm secretly hoping somebody rearranges it to say "VAN HELSING" and "MAN ON FIRE". -

I'm secretly hoping somebody rearranges it to say "VAN HELSING" and "MAN ON FIRE".
MAN HELSING and VAN ON FIRE
but I guess they didn't have the right equipment.
If American Apparel was involved it the sentences would be soft core porn. I guess you can't have porn without photos... soft core erotica then. -

are you hinting that you know the culprit?
-
whoever the culprit is changed it again today to something that seemed vaguely about the supreme court... NINE VAIN MEN OF GAVELS and something else...
in other news, whoever the culprit is is my hero -
I have it on good authority that this is NOT a guerilla marketing campaign for American Apparel. At least the first anagram wasn't.
