Best local Japanese restaurants...

I had such a delicious experience with the best local Mexican restaurants thread, that I had to start a best local Japanese restaurants thread. (Especially since someone mentioned that Y Canteen is good... I have been curious about that place).

Mostly I go to Geido & Gen (Washington & St. Marks). I think Geido has the best sushi, but it can be such a scene. Gen seems a little too expensive, but maybe I am just being cheap.

Any other favorites out there? Does anyone else have an opinion on Y Canteen?

  • Taro Sushi on Dean between 5th and Flatbush. Great sushi. Great service.

Someone else whose opinion I respect recommended that place to me. I have to try that out!
  • I think there is another thread on this but Kiku on 5th Avenue is delish (try the Kiku Roll which consists on cooked Chilean Sea Bass and fried onions on top with creamy spicy sauce) AND they deliver to the PH. Another favorite is Blue Ribbon Sushi on 5th but they are way $$$$$$!

    YUM! I will!
  • Geido might be a scene but they make the best age-tofu (sorry if I mangled that spelling) and the BEST oshinko appetizer (yes, they're just pickled vegetables).

Gen was interesting but spendy for the level of service & quality of food, but I haven't been back in months, I'd give it another shot.

Yamato on 7th Ave and 1st St (I think they used to be that great Southern/Cajun place) is good; same owners as a place on Court St, many of the same menu items. Get rolls, not pieces. Try their house sake as they serve it in nifty bamboo decanter things. yes, they deliver to PH and they take CCs for delivery, which is good, as they're somewhat spendy.

Sushi Tatsu on Flatbush next to the Wing Wagon is good -- solid, not spectacular. Since Geido doesn't deliver that's who we often fall back to..

Has anyone tried the sushi from the fish side of Nat'l Foods / Sea Land on Flatbush? After their last renovation they seemed to have really cleaned up the entire fish counter area, but...

  • Hands down! Taro Sushi on Dean street between 5th ave and Flatbush. No one gets the fish or treats the fish like this guy does. The blue fin tuna is better than steak. His fried oysters ain't so bad either. It puts the other sushi places to shame.
  • As a non-sushi eater, I base my favorite Japanese restaurant on what other than sushie do they serve and I can say the Chicken katsu at Geido is very good. Or the shrimp katsu with egg! YUM!
  • Geido, on Flatbush near 7th Ave is very good. Downside is they don't delivery anywhere!

Agreed. If you aren't ready to spend at Blue Ribbon Sushi on Fifth Ave, Taro is the place to go. I stopped eating everyday sushi in Brooklyn until I went to this place.
  • I just had Taro Sushi for dinner - based on the high kudos given here. My verdict is it's Over Rated! I'm sticking with Geido.

  • which is best for veggie (vegan) sushi? this is the real question.
  • We're at Geido almost every friday night for tuna and avocado battera. YUM. I also like the sharon (pronounced like the Israelli PM, not actually on menu) - thin slices of cucumber around raw samon.

    This is making me hungry.
  • I agree that it is pretty hard to top Geido.

    Has anyone tried Canteen Y?
  • Did Geido get better? I have not been there for at least five years because it was so mediocre compared to any place I went in the east village.
  • hmm, I've only been going to Geido for about 8 months, and we tend to order the exact same thing every time (seaweed salad, pork gyoza (spelling?), tuna/avocado battera with spicy mayo, sometimes the sharon or a few pieces of tuna/salmon), but its always been consistently great. Give it another try! Its so inexpensive as well.

That is surprising to me. I have always found the fish to be much fresher than most of the places I have been to in the east village. And cheaper too. I would be interested to hear what you think on a return visit...
  • Has anyone been to Tamari on 5th and Union (I think). Good sushi, fish in general and good sake. The women who owns it is great too. It's my fave next to Blue Ribbon.

O YEAH . . . I totally forgot about that place. The cheffy guy (is it that lady's son?) has a very creative touch. I think there's no sushi, just rolls, but fresh and excellent. I really liked their udon soups, great for winter. They have several types of sake too...

Guess I'll have to give Geido another try, although since I'm newly enamored of Taro, it might be awhile. My next Japanese splurge will be at Taku at Smith and Dean.
