Genealogy help?
Anyone know where to start researching this one? Got this in an e-mail to the DH general mailbox:
"I am searching for any information regarding a Mrs Martha Anwyl Fricke wife of Louis Fricke of 173 Underhill Avenue Brooklyn, New York. I believe she died in August 1970. Any infomation would be appreciated. Geoff Parry"

Yeah, dude. i used to date her back in the '50's before getting shipped off to Korea. She was quite a snapper, that one.
He's not going to find anything here. he should call the courthouse or city hall for birth/death/marriage records and go from there. -
The library has an online searchable version of the Brooklyn Eagle - you can put in your address and find out if you are living in a former poker den . . . or that the rent used to be $2. The ancient classifieds are also in the database...

My address bears no ill repute. At least not before I got here!
So does anyone know the origins of the Prospect Heights name? As it refers to the present-day neighborhood? I thought it was coined in the past 40 years by realtors. But the name appears pre-1900 in the Eagle. -
in the same vein, i found out recently that you can order a 1930s tax photo of your bulding from the city
From http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/taxphotos/home.shtml
"Between 1939 and 1941, the city photographed every house and building in the five Boroughs. Copies of these unique images are now available for purchase."
And, the Eagle has this to say about a property I'm in contract on...
mr. joseph farrel of no. 679 franklin avenue, had his wife, Annie M. farrell, arrested last night for disorderly conduct with some unknown man in some vacant lots in the Tenth Precinct. Justice Morse committed her to jail. Mr. Farrel has had previous trouble with his wife, who resides at No. 844 Bergen street.
Fun!
