Open House NY
FYI for those who don't know, this weekend (Oct. 8-9) is Open House New York.

I can vouch that the electrical plant tour at Pratt is freakin' amazing. Here's some close-up photos from last year: http://flickr.com/photos/davebgimp/tags/pratt/

Some require reservations, almost all of them do not. Just note the time and place and show up. there's OHNY volunteers that will guide you and answer questions. -
This is a great thing to do. I went to the Pratt stuff and went to Roosevelt Island and it was great.
One sad thing is that nowadays the only way you can see the grand banking area of the One Hanson Place building (aka: the Williamsburg Savings Bank Building) is now via Open House New York.
Back in September I could happilly wait in line and gaze up at what can only be described as a cathedral to money and Brooklyn. As of October 1st, the bank moved across Flatbush into a generic storefront and the old One Hanson Place bank area is closed off from the public.
If you've never seen it before you MUST GO and see it this weekend during Open House New York. And think long and hard about how this great area--that was open to the public for decades--is now going to be privatized and accesible only to the condo owners who will be moving into that building. -
I have to agree with you there Jack it is one of the most beautiful and decadent lobbies in Brooklyn.
Just FYI - if you enjoy that building then you should see the post office building at Bowling Green in downtown Manhattan. It used to be some sort of maritime building and the mosaics on the ceiling are breathtaking. -
Is the bank part of OHNY? I didn't see it on the list. I would love to be able to go up in the tower, but I"m sure that's not accessible.
Last year the Manhattan part of OHNY sucked-- we got a somewhat late start but everyplace we went had long lines and we didn't end up getting to see anything. However, we did go up the Grand Army Plaza arch, which was incredible. And went inside Montauk Club, which is sorta cool if you've never been.
And, through a connection, I managed to get a spot on the tour of Governor's Island-- if you ever get a chance to do that, I HIGHLY recommend it. Very interesting and eerie, because it is so deserted. Did you know that there is a law that no paying guest can spend the night there? This law was created so it couldnt' be turned into hotels, a casino, or even a housing complex. -

Crap! You're right! It was on the list last year, which was kind of funny because at that point the lobby of the building was 100% open to the public during banking hours. So OHNY was not need to guide you through at that point. Why not this year when it's closed and mothballed?
Crap!
I guess we're all going to have to wait until next year when the place becomes a Tapas bar/lounge or some tedious junk like that. -

Governor's Island is awesome. It's so fucking creepy and bizarre. I go there often for events and parties and i'm always waiting for the zombies to come running around the corner to eat my brains. What with the real estate market being as it is, it's crazy that there's this huge ghost town out there. -
Gah! Curse this weather! What a goddamn bustout.
-
Indeed. Outside of the sights I saw last year--that were mostly indoor--I really wanted to go to Governor's Island and the Fireboat on the Westside.
But not in this weather.
The dankness just makes me want to watch TV. -
I was all set for the "Three Fort Bonanza" tour.
Howdy, Stranger!
