NYPD To Issue Transit Terror Warning
wnbc link
Police across New York City will be ratcheting up security on subways and trains because of a relatively specific but uncorroborated terror threat.
...
One source stresses that the warning is still uncorroborated. Nevertheless, NYPD officials felt the information was specific enough to warrant extra precautions.
The threat is specific in terms of time and location -- mid-October and targeting trains in New York City trains.
The warning is expected to go out for at least the next several days as investigators try to determine more about the nature and credibility of the threat.

A "credible threat" to the subway system has prompted a vast mobilization of police officers, law enforcement sources said today.
Hundreds of officers were expected to be dispatched as early as this afternoon to every station in Manhattan -- and possibly system wide -- to thwart the attack, which was said to timed to the Jewish High Holidays and the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Scores of officers from various narcotics units are being called in to assist in patrolling the subways, beginning as early as this afternoon. Many were expected to convene first at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Police sources also said that cops were expected to be kept on 12-hour tours over the weekend.
Police could not yet identify the source of the threat, other than to call it "credible."
It comes as the city emerges from two days of hightened alert during the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana. Police officers patrolled outside of synagogues as thousands of congregants attended services.
MTA officials said they were unaware of the threat until alerted by a reporter. They were expected to return calls later this afternoon.

so since we are always on orange alert, does raised level mean we have finally reached red?
or are we only at red-orange, or would it be orange-red? -

What a bunch of idiots!
Does anyone think this is a ploy for votes? If nothing happens then Bloomberg is doing a great job fighting terror right? -
someone at work just told me the trains to brooklyn aren't running. is this BS?

I just rode home on them and saw no problems or delays, so I think so, yeah. -

I refuse to be that cynical. This is something to take seriously, albeit without panicking.

I also just got home, didn't see anything unusual.

From NY1.com:
As a result of the threat, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says security has been stepped up in the subway system citywide. The NYPD will continue to search passengers’ bags and backpacks, and officers are being told to pay particular attention to baby carriages, luggage and other heavy packages.
Just an FYI but NY1 had a live update from their transit reporting saying the threat was learned about from a known informant in Iraq and that the delivery method is suspected to be SPECIFICALLY a baby stroller/carriage.
Kind of puts a new spin on that whole Park Slope stroller pushing debate. -

More info thanks to WNBC news
NEW YORK -- Authorities stepped up mass transit security Thursday after receiving what city officials called a credible threat that the New York subway may be the target of a terrorist attack in the coming days. But Homeland Security officials in Washington downplayed the threat, saying it is of "doubtful credibility."
The threat involved the possibility that terrorists would pack a baby stroller with explosives and use it to bomb the subway, among other potential bombing methods, a law enforcement official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said the information resulted from the arrest of al-Qaida operatives in Iraq. -
I took the Q to Union Sq around 7 and the L was not in service because of "a security concern". I had to hoof it down to 8th Ave. Coming home (11ish) I was going to take the 2 but decide to check on the L first and it had resumed service.

1) Homeland security deemed the treat "specific but doubtful"
2) How many Bombers on 9/11, Spain, and the UK were women, none, which would make a grown middle eastern man pushing a stroller obvious.
NYC must get threats like this regularly, I think Bloomberg let this one out of the bag to kill the bad PR on skipping the debate -
so? fuck fearmongering.

They are certainly looking at young women for these potential attacks.
I think it was last year that two teen girls in Brooklyn were picked up and held by immigration for some totally bogus lead on their activities. Her school did a play about it or something...memory fails on the particulars this grey morning.... -

yeah, lets take the word of a government we dont trust, regarding a threat theyve know about since monday.
were new yorkers. the chances of dying on the train today arent any worse than usual. -
amusingly, the Q train from 7th ave (bk) to 57th st was empty. EMPTY. the B train that was pulling away as I raced down the stairs (grr) was also empty. at 9 a.m. eh? do that many people have columbus day off and are taking a long weekend or did everyone panic? also, I saw cops at union square and that's it. no cops at 57th street, no cops at 7th ave.
I'm not irritated, really, just confused.
and irritated. I admit it. :? -
Bushs poll numbers go down...up goes the terror alerts. great.
I also always wondered - if we are at orange and everyone else is yellow - and it gets raised - arent we supposed to goto red? But, imagine if we went to red...pure panic. so, thats maybe why. -
I was on the B to Rock Center around 9 (maybe a few minutes earlier) and I wouldn't say it was empty. Definitely not crowded, but I didn't get a seat until DeKalb, which is pretty normal.
I was a little more alert to the people around me this morning, but I wasn't nearly worried enough to shell out for a cab. I agree with whoever said we probably get threats like this all the time, but only hear about certain ones. Politics is an unscrupulous game. -
sometimes i take the train, sometimes i bike into the city. however, today there is both a train-terrorist warning & a flood warning.... WTF?!?? do i risk getting blown up or risk getting washed away down the gutter possibly with the rats?!???
my first thought, however, was YES! the Q train will be empty!! now i will probably be blown up for sure.
please let the trains be running back to brooklyn tonight.... (fingers crossed). -

I'm up for light conspiracy theorizing as much as the next guy, but does anyone really think the revealing of this threat had anything to do with Bloomberg's absence from last night's debate? The guy is going to win in a walk, so it seems unlikely that he'd resort to such drastic measures. I don't love him, I have a little more faith in him than that.
-
i think it has more to do with rove being called to testify before the grand jury again.

I'm far from being the guy wearing the tinfoil hat but I just dont buy it this time. I'm sure every week there's some "information" he must have a couple of people saying "we need to go public with this", and his usual answer is "no need for panic", but this time all he had to do was say yes, and all the bad press is page 12 instead of front. Bloomberg may be decent but his record with civil liberties is crap, and he is in the republican camp.
unfortunately I agree Bloomberg will win but not by a walk, and certainly not with my vote -
It sounds like the information was just more credible than the other times, and you have to draw the line somewhere. No, I'm not so naive as to think there aren't often political machinations behind these terror alerts, but in this particular case I'm not convinced. The bad press on Bloomberg just isn't that bad, not like Bush's current problems which are really dragging him down.
Since I don't yet vote in New York, I will have no say on this election. -

"the rest of america" STILL can't find iraq on a map, despite our presence there for the last few years. to hope for more critical and skeptical thinking out of a people who flunk basic geography and shape-recognition despite constant daily "instruction," is to engage in folly.
