just wondering...
I'm new to this site and I have to say I have found it to be very interesting - especially the shared info on local establishments. Which brings me to my wondering subject - has anyone ever tried the Garden Cafe? If so what was the consensus? I walked in there once and it was a little too pricey so we didn't stay. I never really hear about it from the locals, so I guess what I'm really wondering is how it stays in business. How about the Salon Strategy place on Vanderbilt? I need a haircut, but I've never met anyone whose tried that place. Lastly, how about "The Usual"? I've always wanted to try it, but then I forget it's there. Thanks for any info!

The Garden Cafe is one of the best restaurants in Brooklyn, and if you go on a Tuesday or Wed. there is a prix fixe menu for $28.The usual is a decent diner but trying to sell the building and cash out.

The Usual is a great friendly and cheap diner run by two awesome brothers.

I have mixed feelings about the Usual. The food is average quality diner food, but I find it a bit on the pricey side for what it is. And they used to feature the dumbest waiter in New York, but they got rid of him thankfully.
For haircuts I go to Josephs on 7th. Just make sure you get one of the Russian ladies and not one of the guys, or you'll end up with a Roffler Cut. -

the usual a bit pricey? i know of no other place where i can get a huge breakfast of french toast, bacon, eggs, coffee, and juice for two people for under ten dollars. where are you eating??
also - they're trying to sell the building and cash out? say it isn't so! -
the usual: best egg sandwich to go. it takes forever to get it if they are busy, but it's always worth it. yum!

Not pricey per se, just pricey for greasy spoon/diner food. Especially the way they add up the charges for the 'sides', and the freaking 5 dollar milkshake. It ain't Haagen Dazs, people!
Hate to call BS, but there's no way that breakfast you described 'for two' is under ten dollars. Unless you're both eating off one plate.
Haven't heard anything about the cash out, although they just remodeled the place about a year ago, so you'd think they have something invested in it. -
Garden Cafe is truly superb, and not at all expensive given the level of the food they serve (more of a special occasion than an every day kind of place). They also have a Prix Fixe on (I think) Monday and Tuesday or (maybe?) Tuesday and Wednesday that includes 3 courses for about $30.

I haven't eaten at The Usual in awhile but I recall their breakfast being crazy cheap, like 5 bucks for an omelet, homefries, toast. And I always felt bad for that dumb waiter, but he really was dumb. Poor guy. I guess it doesn't help to be called dumb on a message board either.

Yeah, look in the window of Slope Heights realty on Flatbush and you'll see that the Usual building is for sale. I think a million-plus. The eternal smell of frying bacon is extra.

Subject: usual
yes usual for sale 1400000, i was there for an open house -
I've never really loved the food at the Usual, but the two brothers are so great that we still go all the time, just to hang out. It was the first place we discovered in the neighborhood.
Are they planning to close the restaurant when they sell the building?
The Garden Cafe is really good if you can ever catch it when it's open. It sort of reminds me of the Grocery in Carroll Gardens but with less of a trendy vibe. It seems to attract a distinctly older crowd. The food is excellent but it's not the most exciting dining experience you could have. -

Ah... there's the problem. Before 10 am on a weekend? Are you high? I'm just getting back by then!
