Separating Wheat from Chaffe
long to listener/lurker first timer caller/poster.
Living in Prospect Heights i'm sure many of you have noticed the options for healthy living-eats are lacking.
One of the first things I realized when I moved in a year ago is that all of the bodegas serve white bread and Chinese take-outs serve white rice.
Whole wheat bread and brown rice are not on the menu and will not be served....
Crying or Very sad
that is.... not until I made a special request at the bodega on St. Johns Pl and Washington St. (the one on the same side of the street as Tom's) about 2 weeks ago....
Idea
I asked for whole wheat and asked if they would make me the sandwhich IF I BOUGHT AN ENTIRE LOAF OF BREAD (yes they do have loaves for sale)! I got a curious look but the guy behind the counter said he would do it....
I ate the sandwhich and brought the rest of the loaf home....
Wink
Shortly thereafter a sign was put up that says they now serve whole wheat!
Honey Turkey on Whole Wheat with Muenster Cheese Lettuce and Tomato for only $2.50
Cheap AND Healthy!
Exclamation
My next mission is to get the chinese places to start serving Brown Rice....
ANY SUGGESTIONS?!?!

I posted this... I registered but wasn't sure how to post under my username... now i do...... -
Welcome to the site & the hood and congratulations on your successful endeavor. I have found that shops will often order items for you if they are requested. I know that the Met Food has done that several times for me. That place was so disgusting when I first moved here 13 years ago (worse than C-town is now) and now it is my favorite grocery store.

Do their menus still refer to themselves as "Hood Hang"? My boyfriend and I were laughing our asses off when we received one of their menus in the doorway. -
The Met makes excellent, fresh deli sandwiches, on any bread you like. $3.50.

Lemongrass also has brown rice.
These postings are making me hungry! -
The Hunan place on Union and 6th Ave (in Park Slope) also offers brown rice (not that I've ever ordered it).

you know, i could never get into brown rice, because i keep expecting it to be yummy and pleasingly textured like wild rice (which isn't rice at all) but instead it's like eating uncle ben's topped with metamucil.

Wok-N-Roll always subs brown rice, no problem. -

I once tried a "Wok-N-Roll" in manhattan.... it had to be the worst chinese food I ever ate....
I think it was near Penn Sation
The one on Flatbush Ave is o.k.?

If you're not into the rebellious attitude of 'Wok & Roll', I'd recommend trying "Me & My Eggroll" over in Carroll Gardens.
Can't vouch for the food, but I do think their more classic take on an ironic name might put them a notch above the rest.
Still waiting for "Hollaback Eggroll" to open. -
Let's not forget "Mr. Wonton" of Park Slope

Met Food is fine - but I highly recommend you check the expiration dates on everything before you purchase (not just on the milk). I've gotten expired soda, juices and canned goods there. It has significantly improved over the years, having lived in ProHo most of my life - but, still gotta check things over!
Shucks - back in da day - they used to call the place Speedway! - That's when ProHo was really 'da hood!
Howdy, Stranger!
