No, I hear them, too.
Am I hearing lots and lots of gunshots in our neighborhood? -
Yeah, I heard them too. I don't feel like investigating this time, though. It's not an uncommon occurance.
-
I hear no sirens. That was, like, fifteen bangs? I'm guessing fireworks.

yep, i'm at sterling and underhill. it sounded like it was either in the building next door or out on st. john's. my young man counted about 10 shots.

i am the same person from sterling and underhill and i called 911 within 3 minutes of shots being fired. -
I spoke with the guy who works at the garage across the street.
It wasn't gunshots
A small car was backfiring up and down Underhill. -
In other news, about 5 heroes were kicking the shit out of some small kid on the corner of St John's and Plaza. Yelling something about 'snitchin.' I called the bulls, wait wait -- two gunshots from on St. John's just now. 1221AM. WTF? Someone put something in the water?
-
Maybe these are firecrackers, but they're not backfires.
-
Upon this second round, my boyfriend said,"Maybe it's just some Italian's shooting off fireworks". I promptly reminded him that he's no longer in Carroll Gardens. "Oh... yeah... well, New Yorkers are known to shoot their guns off more than once."

Holy shit, that must be the same group of kids who egged my friend and I a little before then. Well, tried to egg us and missed. I cursed at them a bit but didn't get too into it because, well, who wants to get fucked up over a couple of eggs? And I just heard bangs on St John's as well but probably nothing because no sirens. -
There's been eggings on St John's all day, judging by the sidewalk this afternoon.
-
Oh, those crazy Italian kids with their Columbus Day Raw Egg Hunt/ fireworks show... God love 'em.
-
no eggs and no gunshots here, just mr. sparkles, the park place troll totally flipping his shit: barking, shouting, meanacing, making unusual threats, crying, mimicing automatic weapons fire at about 430 am today whenever someone walked by. i pray he bursts an aneurysm or something someday and dies mid-rant, or at least finds a more appropriate section of park place, like not underneath my window.

why always trouble on St.Johns?!
-
We heard what we think were gunshots around 11pm last night.
-
It was a small car backfiring as it went up the street. I heard it go up, backfiring a few times as it went. The motor was loud also. Then a little while later it went back down and backfired a whole bunch of times. I looked out the window and no one ran or even got off their cell phones. There were no sirens or cops driving around. It is not the wild west in PH. I have lived here for 15 years and in Brooklyn for 20 years. The only time I ever heard gunshots was when I lived in Park Slope. They sound like like pops and not like a car back firing. I guess we are not used to hearing cars backfire much anymore.

That above was actually the missus o' quig. She was getting tired of all of the gunshot comments. She heard all of this when she was trying to put the quiglet to bed for the umteenth time. She would not have left the quiglet near the window.
Her kevlar pj's are in the wash. -

What do you mean by that? As we've got a lot of comments proving, there was no trouble at all! I heard the noise last night, but also the total lack of panic afterwards and knew it wasn't actually gunshots. "Crazy Lane" is not that crazy, people. There's an awful lot of fearmongering going around whenever that street gets mentioned. It's getting a little tiresome. -

I agree. When I read this post, I thought, "what gunshots?" St. Johns place can be dirty, lots of dog poop, tough to find a parking space, and a few dirty/poorly kept buildings, but seriously---its not as bad as some people on this listserv make it... -

But there was still a good old-fashioned beatdown handed out on the corner of St. John's and Plaza. There were a couple of teeth still there this AM. -
Oh haha...we've been Curbed!
I didn't notice any teeth on my walk, but I was also too bitter about going to work this morning... -
Fuck St. Johns and serious fuck Curbed. That's my bitter 2 cents.
-
I heard them too, around 11:45 last night. Hopefully it really was just a car backfiring, because it didn't sound exactly like gunshots I've heard in the past, but I called 911 just in case. This is not "fearmongering" as one post said, it's just a responsible thing to do. If you think you hear gunshots, you should call the police and let them figure it out instead of trying to play acoustics expert.
There were, by the way, firecrackers last night, too. Just to confuse matters.... -
Well here is what definitely did happen on St Johns place this weekend:
~Friday night some guy was punched out in the middle of the block (between Underhill and Wash) somewhere. Knocked out cold, but was able to get up and walk away.*
~Sunday mid-day there was some sort of accident on St Johns and Underhill involving an automobile in which a woman was taken away on a stretcher.**
~Sunday evening a group of teenagers was egging passers by on Plaza and St Johns.***
*I think it was a fight between people who knew each other, no cops were involved
**From what I could gather as I passed by she was a pedestrian hit by a car
***Said group also suspect of beating down a snitch
Also, on Saturday Candi passed by and said hello to me in the rain. -
I'm sure Andy would be interested to know he's running a listserv. Where can I sign up?
I usually like it when Curbed picks up on our posts, but this one seems a little pointless. Hearing about crime makes you more aware of crime. One person's awareness is another person's paranoia.
I agree with the anonymous guest who suggested that you just call the police and let them decide whether it's serious. Kitty Genovese, anyone? -
A topic about gunshots in itself is not what I meant by fearmongering. We all heard the noise, which has been proven as nothing, but I just feel myself getting really annoyed that this one street can bring up a hysterical slant to a lot of posts/conversations. I mean, someone got robbed and pistol whipped on Sterling, but strangely that street doesn't have a reputation. There may -- or may not -- be more incidents than some of the other blocks but there's also probably not another block in the neighborhood with so many people packed in together either. There's obviously a bunch of us who live on that street that haven't had any problems so I hate that it's painted like it is the last frontier of bad old Brooklyn or something. I'm just saying.
-
That's fair enough. Remember when I was suggesting the other night that oher block in ProHo deserve their own names? Perhaps that would deflect some attention. But yes, I think it's partly how many people on that street use this board. I tend not to make posts about things that happen on my block (such as the time a few weeks ago when a zillion fire trucks showed up at once) because I'm not aware of anyone else on my block who looks at DH, and usually I've figured out that nothing happened by the time I get to the computer.

Hey Hey - let's leave Sterling Place out of this - we want no association or comparison to Crazy Lane! -
i lived for years at st. john's & classon and heard a number of "car backfires". after one particular night(summer 2002), i came out to discover that mine and seven other cars parked on the street had a number of holes and missing windows where the backfires had hit them. terrible...
