24 hour diner
Co-op would nice as long as it is not scary like the one on the other side of Flatbush. -

I second the 24 hour diner. I haven't even found a 'regular' hour diner I like. "The Usual" has nice folks it seems but the grub ain't all that.
Co-op would nice as long as it is not scary like the one on the other side of Flatbush.
A Co-op would be nice too. A nice Co-op would be even better. -
Bank/24-hour ATM machine somewhere besides Flatbush

Dude, you're going to make Jack have a seizure!
I'd vote for a real butcher shop, btw. -
Bakery. 8)

How about a Chinese restaurant that's actually worth going to?

There's a no shit. Luckily we have killer falafel at BBQ & Veg. -
A food co-op would be great!

A big, nice grocery store on Washington that stays open late
-
Carnivore wrote: How about a Chinese restaurant that's actually worth going to?
Chinese restaurants in NYC are not the same. They seem to all be hole-in-the-wall places that cater to take-out and bad taste. Sammy's on 6th Avenue in Manhattan is the last place I know of outside of Chinatown that is truly like the old-school NYC Chinese places.
While it doesn't look great, I highly recommend 'No Pork Halal Chinese' (4th Avenue and Dean) if you're in the neighborhood. Great food at decent prices.
PS: No comment on the co-op other than I think having another large co-op in the neighborhood and area would be a great idea. Too bad the current real estate market won't be nice to it. Unless there's someone altruistic and has a lots of space to donate out there out there. -

He will get over it. I have tried to like that place... But any store (or co-op) that makes it's MEMBERS go through 3 bag checks is not a place I want to be a member of.
Evil preachy and evil. I think they should all be force fed Spam sauteed in margarine with a side order of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (love the stuff but willing to watch a co-oper eat it) and Fluff spread on a Thomas' English muffin. -
More entertainment opportunities would be nice - a bowling ring or the like? Although as Jack pointed out - the real estate market would not be kind to the idea given the large space required.
I reached out to the old Brooklyn Tabernacle location on Flatbush a few years back to field the idea of using the space as an entertainment complex (when I got wind that they were moving downtown) - after they finished laughing at me in my face, heartily I might add - they showed me the door!!! They had other plans, apparently! -

Bowling is generally played in an alley.
I would like to see one open here, but I doubt one would. The trend citywide has been for bowling alley closings.

maybe I was thinking rollerskating ring - you got me! Bowling Alley - that's it

Fact-Check: There's only one bag check when you leave. -

Uh huh.... It has been about one year since I have been there so they must have changed. You used to pay, have bag packed buy a volunteer (not the co-oper, they are not allowed to touch what they are buying), some one check the bag, then checked again before leaving.
So trusting... Feel the love! And do not TASTE anything! -

Except in Brooklyn. There's still Melody Lanes in Sunset Park. And Shell Lanes out in Gravesend. Not too sure if Rainbow Lanes in Sheepshead Bay still exists.
But I do think a bowling alley would do very well in this part of Brooklyn.
And there seems to be more than enough land around the Gowanus and general vicinity.
I think people--in general--would appreciate a relatively casual activity like bowling nowadays. It's not as phsyically taxing as other sports, very social and you can go to a bowling alley with family and friends. Bars and pool halls are definitely more adult geared; bowling is for everyone. -
Last year I went to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin Texas, where they serve food and beer while screening all sorts of movies, from new ones to kung fu classics.
Had I any funding, that's what I would have done with the Flatbush Pavilion. The Drafthouse was amazing. -
jack, will you be in charge of the prospect heights co-op? it can start small... on st.john's?!

Well, I've been a member for about 3 years now and can attest you're 100% wrong. You used to pay, have bag packed buy a volunteer (not the co-oper, they are not allowed to touch what they are buying), some one check the bag, then checked again before leaving.
Trust me on this, you're completely wrong. Very, very, very wrong. Here's a play by play explanation.
1) Checkout: You wait on line and a checkout clerk tallies up what you have. Much like any supermarket. Nobody checks your bag. And the checkout clerk does not handle cash.
2) Bagging: Who said you're not allowed to touch what you're buying? Unlike a supermarket, you bag your purchases. So you pack your own bags; not a 'volunteer'. And no bag checking other than telling the checkout person how many bags you have.
3) Pay: After that, you wait to pay a cashier--this is different than the checkout person--but that's it. It's seperated from the checkout process for obvious reasons. It's a volunteer staff and the risks of theft are very real; it's happened. So have a small pool of cashiers who handle the money, have a large pool to handle the checkout and it all balances out. And again no bag check.
4) Leave: And then you just have your receipt checked and you leave. This is the only point you have your 'bag checked' so to say.So trusting... Feel the love! And do not TASTE anything!
Last I checked most green grocers and supermarkets discourage sampling of any kind as well. So I don't understand the attitude towards that. Heck, you can't even sample a Brach's candy aisle at most supermarkets anymore. So let's be realistic.
PS: Nobody is a 'volunteer'. Except for a handful of management positions, the whole place is run by members. And FWIW, I really don't care about who is--or is not--a member of the co-op, but I get a tad pissed when people portray it as an excessively nasty place. It's far from that. Very far from that. And considering a lot of people on this board are--supposedly--community oriented, I'm a tad baffled when I read that some people are bashing a place that actually has encouraged community growth in this every non-community oriented city. -
jack, you still didn't tell us that you agree to being in charge of the PH division co-op.
-
I've got it - it's a real winner - a BOWLING CO-OP!
Jack - are you in? Comeon buddy - let's do it!! -
Oh Christ, more co-op battles!

vanilla wrote: jack, you still didn't tell us that you agree to being in charge of the PH division co-op.
If you're trying to be a [SELF-REMOVED FOR POLITENESS SAKE], congrats Vanilla! You win!
Now let's go back to pre-emptively bashing the 'Burrito Bar' based on the signage alone and not much else.
Seriously. Is C-Town in CroHo or the Met Food in ProHo that much better? It's odd how people bash a place they barely know about like the Park Slope Food Co-Op but then tolerate--to an extent--chains like C-Town that have been busted repeatedly over the years for vermin and spoiled food.
Now lets get back to talking about crack delis and all the bad food options in the neighbohood! -
Subject: You are always right!
I tried to join the co-op twice. Both times I was turned off by tours that only cited the cannot do's. I have been members of co-ops in two other states (Mass and CA) and never came across the atittude that I did here in Park Slope. Now I must get back to my paper on Berry and Pollan.
Co-ops are a great idea and the Park Slope Co-op should be happy to have you as a member. I applaud your dedication. -

You know, if you tried to join it twice it means you went to an orientation and were given a pass to shop there at least once to shop on your own. There's another thread where I explained it, but the tours are abyssmal. You don't get a good feel for the place. Go to an orientation, get the pass. And then try it on your own.
And if you don't want to join, then whatever. But why bash it? Just don't join and admit it's not for you.
I hated the food I got at Lemongrass Grill on 7th Avenue but I'm not starting tirades against them.Co-ops are a great idea and the Park Slope Co-op should be happy to have you as a member. I applaud your dedication.
Thanks, but given the tone and predjudice towards my defense, I'm not too sure how to take it. So I'll leave it as that.
Let me put this in perspective. I'd defend any place/thing/person to the same extent if they were equally misrepresented and misjudged in the same way.
Many views of the place are simply off and prejudicial. It's that simple. And the level of bile spilled towards the Park Slope Food Coop is bizarre. Especially considering how crappily other places/business routinely treat people. Such as the entire crappy C-Town chain and the crack delis that are all over the place. It simply seems strange that people grin and bear the fact that C-Town, Met Food and such places exist, but bash the living hell out of a community centered resource such as the Park Slope Food Coop.
PS: I'm done--in this thread at least--regarding co-op stuff. So let's stick to the topic. BOWLING ALLEYS!!! We really, really, really, need one in this part of Brooklyn. -
Rink, guys, rink! I know it's not bowling, but let me recommend Brownstone Billiards. We went there to play air hockey once, but you can also play pool and ping-pong. It fits into the same category of awesomeness as bowling does.
Howdy, Stranger!
