Grocery Store? cheap but non-expired food?
i've been living here a couple months, but haven't figured out the best - or even just GOOD - places to get groceries.
my roommate & i went to C-town when we first got here. the packaged stuff (cereal, soup) was fine. but needless to say, after getting some nasty vegetables and then seeing a fight break out over who was in line first, we haven't exactly, um, gone back at all.
a neighbor orders from freshdirect.com, which i'm thinking of doing eventually.. but i really just want a place to pick up my basics every few days, instead of having to get a $50 minimum in one shot
i suppose i could also post this in the crown heights forum, seeing as i live in the fuzzy area.
thanks!

freshdirect is a $40.00 minimum, not 50. Also, on average, their produce is so much fresher that it lasts for 2-3 longer in my fridge than stuff from key food. Its worth it

Key Foods on Washington is marginally better than C-Town, but still pretty mediocre. There's a place on Franklin and Lincoln or so which is probably of similar quality. Met Foods on Vanderbilt seems to be the first frontier for decent food shopping in the area, but it's a bit far from where we are... the lack of a decent grocery store around here is a serious issue that hopefully will be addressed sooner rather than later.

The fact that Pathmark always has at least 20 minute-long lines indicates to me that another store of that size is needed in the area. This is a business opportunity that is going wanting.
Of course, if Key and C-Town just wanted to operate more effectively, that would change the picture too. Are there any bodegas with fresh fruit and veggies over on Washington? It looks like I may be moving over to that side of the Heights soon, so I'd love to know. -
Subject: market...
You mentioned you are in the CH area, well if Nostrand isnt too far, at Lincoln PL, there is a wonderful produce market with some of the best selection Ive seen in these parts...and next door is a small organic supermarket complete with juice bar...good stuff over there.. -
the park slope food co-op is a good time.

The "Associated" on the corner of St Johns and Underhill has a (very) limited produce section. -

I purchased a lovely lemon the other day at the bodega next to Tom's on Washington & Sterling. -
Oh, crap. That was me again. I don't know how to delete a post if I posted as a guest accidentally. My computer sucks. If I accidentally hit the "back" key it always posts my post again. Any suggestions, other than not hitting the damn back button? I have the oldest Imac in the world, but it was free so I can't complain.

Subject: Whole Foods to the Rescue
Actually, there is a Whole Foods slated to open on the corner of 4th ave and 3rd Street. I know its not walking distance, but its a pretty straight shot on the B71 bus.
Its listed on their website under stores in development, but the date hasn't been announced yet.
