Will Caldwell Turn Tish Out on Her Ear? Find out TONIGHT
[UPDATE: See JCaldwell's post below indicating NEW LOCATION (Park and Classon)]
Wowie... no surprise here, since Letitia James is one of the Atlantic Yards project's fiercest opponents, and James Caldwell is the project's cheerleader-in-chief. But still... come on!!
Random_person told Daily Heights: "We were walking down the Flatbush Street Festival on Sunday and ran into Tish James... she said James Caldwell 'banned' her from the Community Council meetings at the 77th Precinct, and said he would throw her out if she tried to show up."
[Oh yeah... in addition to being the CEO of BUILD, Caldwell also happens to be the President of the 77th Precinct's "Community Council," which is supposed to be some sort of interface between NYPD and The Community.]
Random_person continued: "She said she is going anyway, and they are public meetings, and they can’t kick her out. And they refunded the money she gave to the kids organization that they run. I think they have a youth police athletic-type thing."
"You may want to ask her about it... She didn’t seem afraid to bring it up."
Will do. Thanks for the info!

Wow! Does this story still lack interest enough for the media?

77 pct Community Affairs
Can someone explain to me what 77th precinct community affairs has to do with Atlantic Yards? I thought these meetings were about setting police priorities. -

True. Mr. Caldwell who runs that Precinct Committee, but is also the President of BUILD, is PO'd at Tish about the release of BUILD's IRS forms. Even though Tish had nothing to do with that.

Mr. Caldwell is foolishly overstepping his bounds. -
Subject: BUILD Honored Tish James at an Event
I can't remember if I read it on the web or within financial data, but BUILD had an event I believe last year and they honored Tish James. I remember finding it strange since she is such an opponent. It could have been BUILD's attempt to get Tish on board, but I find it a bit strange that Tish would have agreed to be associated with the organization. -
Subject: Proper Location for Monday's Meeting
To all of those concerned about the next upcoming meeting for the 77th Precinct Community Council, the proper location is the Center for Nursing and Rehabilition at the corner of Classon and Park and not the 127 Utica Ave address as posted earlier. We invite all to attend. For those expressing interests in our mission it is five-fold.
1. To maintain direct contact between the Precinct Commanding Officer and the community.
2. To encourage community involvement in public safety issues and quality of life conditions.
3. To promote awareness of law enforcement efforts.
4. To enhance community relations between the local police and the people they serve.
5. To initiate programs to deal with the needs and interests of each community
We look forward to seeing you. -
I say Tish and Caldwell should put aside their differences on Monday night and unite to address the critical dog poop issue at hand! I walked out my building door and there was a huge hot load sitting there - disgusting!
Ratner can wait - let's unite and get those folks who are not scooping their poop!!! Whatya say.... -
I can handle two thoughts at the same time, such as rude dog-owners and faux community activism, as can most of my neighbors. I am, however, still trying to wrap my head around how someone could think that adding more traffic and/or demolishing homes could be good for this already-growing neighborhood.

That's because James along with Roger Green founded BUILD to begin with.
The event you're referring to was the community leader awards from last November.
A number of community leaders were honored there and not just Tisch. -

Sorry if this is cryptic but I do have to do some work but...
I went, but I could not stay for the entire thing. I did not see Letitia. I can say for sure the meeting was not what I expected. I did get see see James Caldwell speak and it is my opinion he is a charlatan of the largest caliber, for example.
He hijacked the begining of the meeting to use it as his soapbox where he responded to "people talking in the neighborhood" about how he is a racial divider and talked about himself a lot (but nothing about what I thought everyone was there for) like ...
he's had a quaduple bypass
he served in the army 6yrs
he was proud to be wearing the american flag
his wife had recently been sick
not ashamed to work for the community and to go get jobs for the community
he told us his birthdate
He had left some copies on all the chairs. I have them at home, but one was a daily news article from 1999 about the girl that got stabbed, because he wanted the people to know he was not a divider... he reminded us that the article was written not by him but by the daily news. James proceeds to talk aout how he set up the candlelight vigil, how he talked to the mother, he dropped horrid detail about the crime that happened on "Park Avenue"..... what an ass, all that and he forgets its park place?
Another time he wanted to thank the venue, he went on and on about how great the people were there, how it was a great place for the community how his brother recovered from lung cancer there....and then he forgot the name of the place......people from the audience had to fill him in.
Then he waent to discuss a horrible shooting that occurred on lincoln place , he dropped some details, talk about how he felt , went on and on about the boy and he family. He really pulls on the emotions of the crowd...but then he forgets the name of the kid that got shot.....
I was impressed by the lincoln place block association which showed up en masse and pressed the officers for information about the shooting and were able to give some information as well, that is what I expected from the meeting and was happy to see it. The officers there certainly seemed to be open to comments and willing to take suggestions and were giving their direct numbers out left and right to people that asked.
While other people were talking James Caldwell could be seen talking on the phone, sorting through pictures, and I one point I thought he dozed off.
Also, and this is just what I thought, but James mangles the english language but some people might call it ebonics. James invocates God a lot and gives up a LOT of personal information to gain support but I found him to be low on facts. But he definately has his supporters and they eat up his personal information, they certainly enjoy his speaking style, and they love god and his invocations and he knows them by name, but for the most part the are a bunch of older ladies. I never thought he was a divider, I wanted to hear what he had to say about taking 5 mil from Ratner.
This is all my opinion, if you have the chance I suggest going to one of these meeting and checking it out yourself. By the way, I dont know any DH people by sight but I'm pretty sure I didnt see any there, that was a bit disapointing if we could roll in like the Lincoln place Block association we could have some clout and get double parkers in the bike lanes ticketed. -

Thanks for going to the meeting!!

quig was there. he also said that Tish didn't show up.

After being there I came to the realization that this was not the venue to discuss BUILD or the arena and had more to do with police matters. So the Letitia and Caldwell showdown would have been inapropriate, or no more so than some of the other speakers. I do want to see Caldwell discuss the bribe...I mean contribution he recieved in a public space.
But I did get the BUILD CBA document at the meeting, I left it at home but its rediculous, its all, "and FCR will 'attempt' to hire X many workers from the area" or "FCR will 'do their best' to use local business" and "'Some' stadium seats will be reserved for the local community". -
Subject: cba
yes, the CBA should be renamed "FCR intends to and if we don't we'll give BUILD 500k and be done with it" -

Shame! We have got to be present people!!! -
I was there. It was a great turnout by the Lincoln Pl block assoc.
No Tish
No Drama
Lotta BUILD propaganda.
Tony Herbert was there. Like him or not, he put in some face time. -
That was me.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here was Caldwell's "reply" to Captain M's comments, as reported by anon_brooklyner and recently posted on the dailyheights.com blog:

James Caldwell Fact-Checks "The Opposition"
Thanks to anon_brooklyner for keeping his/her finger on the pulse of "The Community." The report comes from last week's meeting of Community Board 8, featuring the ubiquitous and omnipresent Man Standing Behind Ratner (MSBR):
"James Caldwell told everyone to go to 'his' (i.e. about him) two new websites, dailyheights and nolandgrab. He claims some of the info on the site about him was wrong and that people should read what 'the opposition' is saying ..."
"... he rambled along, and said these websites have misinformation: 'my wife was not sick, she had open heart surgery.' and 'I did not have a quad-bypass, i had a triple bypass.' and 'my brother did not die, it was my cousin.' he also ranted about the usual stuff, but I was pleased to see that he didn't get that much vocal support ... the only person loudly clapping was, hmmm. Marie Louis [also of BUILD], although, I think she abstained from the vote on CB8's comments about the draft EIS for the ratner site..."
