Grocery Store? cheap but non-expired food? — Brooklynian

Grocery Store? cheap but non-expired food?

i've been living here a couple months, but haven't figured out the best - or even just GOOD - places to get groceries.

my roommate & i went to C-town when we first got here. the packaged stuff (cereal, soup) was fine. but needless to say, after getting some nasty vegetables and then seeing a fight break out over who was in line first, we haven't exactly, um, gone back at all.

a neighbor orders from freshdirect.com, which i'm thinking of doing eventually.. but i really just want a place to pick up my basics every few days, instead of having to get a $50 minimum in one shot Smile

[i also posted this in the prospect heights forum, seeing as i live in the fuzzy area in-between.]

thanks!

You mentioned you are in the CH area, well if Nostrand isnt too far, at Lincoln PL, there is a wonderful produce market with some of the best selection Ive seen in these parts...and next door is a small organic supermarket complete with juice bar...good stuff over there..

We do freshdirect, but for emergency and in-between shops we get off the B/Q at 7th and shop at Natural Land on the way home for produce (or Met if what we need is packaged). It's more expensive, but the produce won't make you want to kill yourself.

    No :)
It goes all year, but the produce selection is going to be limited with the end of the growing season.

I realize its a trek, but the B71 bus goes down Eastern Parkway directly to the Park Slope Food Coop. I've even stopped going to the farmers market as often since the coop is SO much cheaper. Really, there's no other place for cheap, quality produce.

My secret plan, of course, is to convince the membership to open a new branch of the Coop in CH, but for the moment, that's the single best option.

I'll that the Food Coop would open a sister organization in Crown Heights if they could find a sponsor, like a church. Anybody know of any churches interested?
