Daily Hieghts Suggestions

mr. tips
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Before anyone says "mind your own buisness," "balh blah dont be critical" I want to thank DH for allowing me to have access to its site and I really enjoy it.

Now i do have some minor suggestions that I think would help:

1. Dont allow guests to post. We all know what trolls can do.
2. Dont display SO many posts per page. The page load on some of these threads is crazy.

acutually...thats it. Im sure others have some helpful ideas too...

EDIT: me spell GOOD!

  • I second number 1. My page loads are pretty fast though
  • Guest posting is a long contended issue. Do a search and you'll find several threads where it's argued exhaustively. As it stands, troll posting is dealable and some of the crankiest bastards here are registered users anyway. It'd be great if everyone registered, but the guest posting stays.

A poll was done a few months ago about increasing the post per page limit and it was agreed to increase the posting limit.
  • 1- beaten to death several times.
2- I only have a problem with loading when surfing from my phone.

See, i should have searched the topic first! D'OH! ;)

Most topics arent a problem, just some of the ones that go on and on...
  • 3. Stop displaying gigantic graphics in signature files.

    Heh.
  • dailyheights wrote: 3. Stop displaying gigantic graphics in signature files.

    :P ;)
  • So is that site yours? Did you write all those reviews?
  • dailyheights wrote: So is that site yours? Did you write all those reviews?
Its a friends and mine. He writes all the reviews, I developed and maintain the site. Its his brain child. :)
  • dailyheights wrote: 3. Stop displaying gigantic graphics in signature files.

    i second that.

also: it should be a DH rule that no one is allowed to complain about guest-posting without also complaining about the banner ads.

also: not that i actually give two shits, but just for curiosity- didnt the "poll" vote in favor of no guest posting? i see its still available. lol.

    WHY?
  • i don't like the guests.. :(
  • vanilla wrote: i don't like the guests.. :(
no one does. but for some reason, they persist. despite our landslide vote to not have them anymore. heh.

despot mods! *shakes fist at sky*

gotta second vanilla on that. as a former unregistered user myself I used to think guest posting made sense, but I can't really see the benefits now (Until I finally dragged my ass to a happy hour, no one on the board knew who I was anyway.)

Plus I keep getting so excited to see orange only to find the new posts are rantings.

I agree - in the words of our own Cupcake that is so "crunk"

Perhaps the guests are "crunk" when they're posting.

  • guest posting and trolling don't bother me at all. i spent years on listservs getting my pants all up in a bunch with trolls and flame wars and have just learned to ignore, laugh, and let go. i've become addicted to boards (like this one) while at work because of the opportunity to interact (nicely) when i please and to just not get involved when it doesn't involve me.

if you ignore, you give them no ammo.

only allowing members to view posts would have stopped me from seeing how cool this place was when i first started sniffing around.

no suggestions from me. keep the board the way it is, long rambling threads about tapas which turn into cuban food discussions and all.
  • I don't think members-only prevents viewing, just posting. I too benefited from just perusing the boards, and checking things out before really diving in here.

As for ignoring the trolls, I learned to do that the hard way, but sometimes the right combination of button pushing and external factors (i.e. shitty day at work) send you over the edge. I loathe trolls and would love to see guest posting disabled. Perhaps other people enjoy the flame wars that ensue, but I think it brings down the morale of the board. It takes all but a moment to register.

FWIW, I have not seen guest posting available on any other message board I frequent and while arguments are often abundant, they seem to maintain a certain level of civility.
  • One thing that I think makes this board an interesting case is that I think it attracts a good proportion of people who are relatively new to this kind of communication, or maybe even the internet in general. I think some people who show up here and exhibit trollish behavior are truly not aware of the way that they are offending us. (For example, the massive cross-poster or sockpuppet types vs. the political argument provokers who probably are just trying to be annoying.) It's intuitive to me that you should hang around and get the feel for a community before posting on every goddamned thread, but apparently not to everyone out there.

Therefore I really can't be convinced that it's a bad thing to slow people down in the registration process and make them overcome one little hurdle before they can start posting all over the place. It would almost enforce the old netiquette idea of lurking before posting.

If we were worried that this would penalize people who just want to post one-time things about an event or a lost pet, we could either permit anon posting in the classifieds only and let that be a free-for-all (possible?) or have a sticky that says "email it to [email protected]" and either a mod or some other non-mod volunteer could post those things. That would probably cut down on classified/Craigslist type posts, but this site originally only had a link to Craigslist--we started the classified section to prevent people from crossposting that kind of thing in every other part of the site, not because anyone was really keen to host classifieds.

Edit: By sockpuppet, I mean this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_sock_puppet
  • I have to say its not so much the bs some of the trolls have to say I can pretty much ignore that - but when they get personal - such as the comment Guest posted to alafairnadia - and the taunting of Emily and Daveb - then it really pisses me off. Is there a way that, even as a guest, you must agree to certain rules before posting. Some sites I have joined or read ask you to read the rules/etiquette (sp?) of the specific site and you check either agree or don't. That way when someone breaks the rules and are either banned for say a day or two, more for repeat offenders, they have no one to blame but themselves. Most of the time I just ignore them but to get personal with people you know nothing about really upset me.

I think it was James who put it perfectly, we are a community, a small family of sorts, and I have come to like and respect the people who post here - even those whose opinions are totally inopposite of mine.

    Heh.
I changed my sig to a much smaller img since....

I still say no guests... :P
  • I'm new here, so, yeah...

But, first off, I think that I would not have been put off by a log-in requirement. I didn't post as a guest, mostly because I didn't want to interfere without making some kind of commitment to the community--or at least allowed for some kind of oversight. I think that making it a members-only site would not deter the nice people from joining and commenting and becoming involved. That being said, it may not deter a troll, either. They certainly spend plenty of time posting, so one additional hurdle is not a big deal.

(SIGH) I don't know. I feel pretty strongly that the latest ones, at least, have crossed a basic decency line. Is there a function where, if you're posting as a guest, your IP address is recorded? That way, we can inform them that they are being tracked (basically) and that any inappropriate behavior will result in their being banned. I know that livejournal has something along those lines...that at least gives the mods some more leverage.
  • I'm for no guest postings.

Once again, I suggest a chat room.

Everyone's IP address is already recorded, so whether they're a guest or not, they've still got some sort of ID. That aspect escapes them occasionally, e.g. Ellis G vs. Ellis Gee.

i think its funny that every time this discussion pops up- and it has many, many times- 99% of the folks here are all for nixing guest posting... but it never happens. lol.
