No Soda for me this week either...

I'm the highest ranking non-Jew in the office... no, it's not that I'm high-ranking, but banks tend to clear out on Jewish holidays. -
daveb wrote: [quote=Cupcake]In that case you'd better bring Jorge and the miniskirt and dance for us, fool.
YOU CAN'T DENT MY RAINBOW EITHER, YOU CUPCAKE-EATING FREAK!!!
Or, I could bring Uno.
I'm gonna dent your rainbow, then I'm gonna dent your face.
And just for that, I'm not sharing my cupcakes tonight. :!: -

i fear the rain may keep me inside this evening... i'd hate to melt before i even got there. but i'll try! where will you all be stitting at?
-
We're usually in the back room, preferably at the larger table toward the front.

Is that offensive?!
So, I'm sittin' at my desk today, and the Sales VP comes over and says, "You're the office tomorrow. You're Sales, Operations and Pricing."
"Whoa! What?!" is my natural response.
"We're all a bunch of Hebes- tomorrow's Yom Kippur. You're the man!"
I know that nothing I've said would offend any of the gentlemen from my bank that are observing tomorrow. If I've genuinely offended you, should I amend my previous post by saying, "...MY bank tends to clear out on Jewish holidays"?! -
FYI, there isn't going to be Taboo tonight. So bring your own knitting or Evercrack or whatever. See you soon.

I don't want this to turn into another flame war, and I'm really not that sensitive.
I just suggest you think about how what you said comes across. You're in New York now, not Minnesota. There are more Jewish people here, so lots of businesses tend to clear out on Jewish holidays, not just banks. -

C'mon, you know he didn't mean any offense. -
My summary: Stacey has a board game prodigy in the making. Candicissma and I are psychic twins, as are Carnivore and pensodyssey. I didn't see any hardcore drinking, though I'm sure it lurks somewhere. No DH himself, but both mods showed, so all was well under control.
Glad to have met everyone tonight. -

As a Jew--who's not religious, but quite culturally aware--I can honestly say you are completely overreacting in the most ultra-sensitive white-guilt ridden/politucally correct way. Trust me on this. You are completely wrong.
Jews do work in the banking/finance industry. No big secret or big deal. And nothing to be ashamed of. Ditto with the camera/photography business. Stupid me forgot it was Rosh Hashana and when I went to Adorama camera on 18th Street and it was closed. Because most of the camera stores in this city are owned by Jews. And real estate? Let's not even go there! I can't forget the days my parents had to pay rent. The landlord came over and the kibbitzing and noshing went on for hours and hours! And then we paid the rent.
And honestly I found NYBTs quote to be a tad funny. Because as a Jew I cannot tell you how many times I've been asked to 'be available' during Christmas or Easter. So NYBT's view on his situation is the 'other side of the coin'; so-to-say. -

I'm not sure what "white-guilt" you're talking about Jack, because I'm Jewish, but I'm glad you speak for all of us.

I'm sure that nybt didn't mean to be offensive. I think he comes from somewhere without that many Jews and probably didn't realize how what he said sounded.
I'm not being ultra-sensitive, and I think if you didn't have a chip on your shoulder from the other thread, you might have actually read my post, where I specifically said as much. You're quite simply being a jerk and looking to pick a fight. -
Carnivore wrote: I'm not sure what "white-guilt" you're talking about James, because I'm Jewish, but I'm glad you speak for all of us.
Well, you have over-reacted. Plain and simple. And in a very overly politically correct way.Carnivore wrote: I'm sure that nybt didn't mean to be offensive. I think he comes from somewhere without that many Jews and probably didn't realize how what he said sounded.
Quite presumptuous on your part. I saw nothing ill in it and have heard similar statements said by 'goy' co-workers and pals I grew up with in Brooklyn.Carnivore wrote: I'm not being ultra-sensitive, and I think if you didn't have a chip on your shoulder from the other thread, you might have actually read my post, where I specifically said as much. Actually in the other thread, you were one of the first people to play games and fan the fires of flaming. The first person to blame the victim. The first person to question motives behind the event. And in this thread you decided to do a similar thing. You're blowing an offhand comment out of proportion and acting as a defender towards staw-men conceits.
If you don't want to start flame wars, please start thickening your skin. And if you thought NYBT was being a bit insensitive there was nothing stopping you from sending a private message and not waving your personal insecurities in public.
Sorry for everyone else, but Carnivore until you see how you've started contention in this thread and the other one, you'll never avoid these conflicts. -
I'm tired of this. Please. You guys are scaring people away.

Jack wrote: Well, you have over-reacted. Plain and simple. And in a very overly politically correct way.
And that is "white-guilt" how? What does "white" have to do with anything?Jack wrote: Quite presumptuous on your part. I saw nothing ill in it and have heard similar statements said by 'goy' co-workers and pals I grew up with in Brooklyn.
Actually, no, it wasn't presumptuous at all. I happen to know that nybt is from Minnesota. I'm sure he wasn't trying to be offensive, but anti-semitic people are often quick to connect Jews and the finance industry ("money changers in the temple"). I wanted to make sure he understood the implications of what he said. You're the one who's being presumptuous, thinking that it's your place to teach me some sort of lesson.Jack wrote: The first person to blame the victim. Again, I never "blamed the victim". But you sure love those sound bites, don't you? I'm not defending "straw man conceits". As someone who lost most of my extended family in the Holocaust, I think I have a right to call someone out when they make an insensitive comment. It's not an insecurity, and unlike you, I'm not hiding behind my computer. I come to the DH events and the regulars here all know me. I invited you to join us to try to defuse your ridiculous confrontation and you refused.
And don't preach about thin skins when you get apoplectic anytime someone says something slightly unflattering about the co-op. After all, demeaning a race of people is one thing, but don't speak badly of the precious co-op, right? :P -
Sorry, Andy. Cross-posted. It'll end here.
-
DailyHeights, sorry but Carnivore's personal assaults--including bringing up the Holocaust--deserve a public smack down.
Carnivore wrote: It's not an insecurity, and unlike you, I'm not hiding behind my computer.
Just one thing. I'm a relatively new member here. Live in Boerum Hill and the walk to SODA is simply not attractive in any way. Espeically at a job in which I'm often dumped with work at 5:00pm or 6:00pm and simply can't go out drinking on a weeknight to hang, ya dig?
Hiding? Create a welcome environment and people will come. And up until dealing with your assinine bullshit Carnivore, I have actually looked at Daily Heights as a great place. But your posts, your flame-baiting and your inability to deal with 'hot button' issues in private made me realize that whatever... I have better things to do with my life... And mending bridges with someone I barely know who who simply instigates flame wars on a community BBS is not worth my time in any way.Carnivore wrote: As someone who lost most of my extended family in the Holocaust.
If you want to go there I'll just state this fact just to give you some much needed perpective. My mom and dad directly experienced the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust personally as teens. They actually met in the aftermath of Russian/American liberation. Won't go into pithy details, but I'll sum it up like this: Never had any grandparents who were alive thanks to the Nazis and partially the Russians as well. And I know very well what it means to be attacked for being a Jew personally from that past and from personally history growing up in NYC as a Jew and first generation American child of immigrant parents.
And never in my life did I feel the need to bring up my family's past to defend wrongs done to me now. You must be quite proud of yourself. And perhaps I have 'sunk down to your level' by explaining my Holocaust experience, but please. You're pulling it out like a license to kvetch!
In this specific case, your own prejudice against Minnesota--and someone being raised there--triggered you to give NBYT an over-reactive 'what for' for making a simple and innocuous statement.
That's it.
But beyond all of that the simple question remains.
How come you don't send a PRIVATE MESSAGE to people who you have issues with instead of starting your own assinine ego-fulfilling arguments in a public forum? Again, perhaps I have sunk down to your level but why can't you just PM people? You clearly had the choice in this specific case to say something in private to NYBT; but you didn't.
So backround, shmackround. You have some real issues understanding when to deal stuff with private or in public.
My condolences to you and yours. -

can't we all just get alone?
love n kisses,
rodney -
Can I propose a new "level of offensiveness" litmus test?!
If it doesn't make a good Yo' Momma joke, don't take offense! Let's try it out!
"Oh yeah?! Well, YO MOMMA runs a bank!!!"
"Oh SNAP! No you d-in't!!!"
Nah. Doesn't work, but I apologize for any inadvertent offense in any event.

Nice to meet you too, James (and Muk and Stacey for real this time)! He came through with the Taboo.
Glad to have met everyone tonight.
He was also on Team Destroyer that annihilated the competition with our awesome word association skills. The drinking was light on my part at least because I was saving my money for overpriced Manhattan drinks. My concert mostly sucked because it was a rainy mess to get there and the place was too overcrowded. I should've stayed with y'all! -

Hell yeah we DESTROYED. Pensodyssey had his short-shorts in a bunch checking to make sure I was keeping score correctly 'cause it was just too much for him to lose!. Ha! DOOM!!! We slaughtered your troops, sacked your city and danced to the music of the lamentations of your women! DOOM!!!
Yeah, the heavy drinking was a bit light this Weds. I blame it on the weather. -

we didn't stay much later, though. some of us *cough*me*cough* might have been convinced to pop over to sepia since it's a bit closer to home. but then again, going to bed before midnight for once is not as overrated as it sounds.
it was fun to meet Stacey, James & Muk.
now we need to think of a good game for next week ... -

Fair enough, nybt. This has blown up way beyond anything you initially said, and I don't hold it against you.

Jack, I've gotten to know Carnivore at Happy Hours and while I don't pretend to know his innermost workings, I can assure you that everything you think you know about him is wrong. He is a great guy.
I've run into nybt twice also, once literally during rush hour, and I think he's pretty great especially considering he comes from a place where people sculpt likenesses of their royalty out of butter.
Hell, I even really like daveb, a person who routinely tells me to stick my baked goods where the sun don't shine.
And I might even like you if I met you in person. After all, you run a pretty cool blog. But I certainly don't fucking like you on this forum.
What's the lesson here? Reserve judgement and anything else you want to pass/cast until you meet someone in person. And I'm posting this here instead of in a PM because I think we could all benefit from this reminder.
PS Next week in Taboo, all you cake haters are going down. -

just for that, I'm going out right now and slaughtering a baby cupcake! I'll paint the walls with it's fucking frosting! -
Also had a good time meeting folks and playing Taboo. I promise to figure out which team I am on before the end of the game next time. Oh, and I'll bring a stopwatch.
