AGGGGGGHHHHHH! It's like London without the bad food* and cheaper rents -- for now.

*Except for Indian. There's some damn fine Indian food in London.

    I was wondering who would actually start a thread on this! Yeah, I've wanted to ride my bike in Prospect Park for several days now, but am unwilling to risk wet brakes (get in a bad bike accident, you'll understand). Bleah. The good news is we'll likely have actual Fall weather when it quits raining.

    I, too, just ate some Indian food for lunch (leftovers). But while we're on the topic of London (sort of), I would like to defend the city by saying that its great food is not limited to Indian--actually, it's very much like New York in that it offers up a wide array of deliciousness from every possible ethnic background.

    but yeah, London wasn't as bad, food-wise, as I expected. then again, I was with foodies, so I wasn't going to be led to bad food.

    I did eat some decent Mexican there last time I went, but I concede that it's not going to blow you away, and it's not easy to find. But generally, it's a great food city, and the whole "food sucks in England" thing is a stereotype that hasn't been true in a long time.

    yeah. then again, I could subsist on burgers in a pub indefinitely. especially since they put mayo on them.

    does any bar in town (not just proho) make Pimms & lemonade? Love's said the were going to start carrying Pimms but I haven't seen it there so far.

    I had a client lunch and walked the six blocks there. My pants were soaked to the bone (seriously, I wrung them out and water trickled out). I got to the restaurant and it must have been bad because the waiter asked if I wanted chef pants to wear during lunch.

    I am still damp right now (2 hours later) and have the chills going (since the air conditioning is STILL blasting in my office). I am sure that I will be dry by the time I leave this hell.. just to get soaked again on the way home.

    I know we needed this rain but ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!!!!!! :evil:

    i grew up in this sort of weather, so it doesn't affect me as much... i just go with the flow, start listening to a lot of morrissey, wearing lots of black, breaking out the the wellies...

    Same thing happened to me ... had to step through major puddles to get home ... ruined a totally great pair shoes .... !!!

    Meant as a dig, not as a truth. Anyhow, I had one of the best pulled pork sandwiches with proper vinegar sauce and peppers in London of my life. I just remember a night on the town (Lotherton (sp) Hall for all you dance music freaks) and eating bangers and mash with treacle on toast at 7AM with Boddingtons. What goes down, must come up.


    Note: I grew up in North Carolina and am a certified BBQ snob.

    I spend quite a bit of time in London (past & present) and I think the stereotype is spot on, generally - the everyday food is generally bland - except for the trendier restaurants.

    I would not list London as a "great food city" - that should be reserved for places like NY - where you can actually get 'great food' from a sidewalk cart at times - which is not a real likelihood in London.

    Just my humble experience, is all.

    why do you think indian food is craved almot universally, it seems, during unending precipitations? is it a monsoon thing? a warm-spice thing? i, too, hit the JOY-indian button on my speed-dial this week for delivery.

    shit, seasonal vitamin-d-lacking depression, aside, having a 90-pound german shepherd whose favorite roost is your bed is a seriously bad situation in this weather. not enough good indian food (nor ssri's) in the world to remedy WETDOG.

    are there dogs in london? is there a secret to dealing with this more graciously?

    I know at least one sidewalk cart in London where I get great food every time I go--granted, they're crepes, not a meal, but they're practically worth the trip there.

    Having said that, I don't think the main qualification for being a great food city should be whether you can get outstanding food on the sidewalk. If you know where you're going in London, you can find great food all over the place.

    i only have one pair of shoes and they're crappy sauconys that refuse to dry, so every day my feet are just wet the whole day. When I take my socks off, it looks like i've been in a pool or something, and now they're starting to blister up pretty good.

    Maybe time to get some other shoes, anyone know where one can find size 13 galoshes? That way, I can protect myself from the rain and also James Joyce's passion for Ireland. That was intensely nerdy.

    Also maybe Brooklyn is being punished for beating white kids from oklahoma, complaining about the food co-op, suggesting that there are lots of jews in banking, and for not offering good enough gyros.

    God likes his Gyros, and maybe he's disappointed in all of us.

    Maybe we should build an Ark. An Ark made of Gyros.

    Crap maybe I should do less drugs before I start posting at 1:30 am. Less drugs and more gyros.

    My Doc Martens are doing alright for now, but I really need to replace my Red Wing insulated boots. They rule in the slippyslidymidwinter. Toes stay dry and warm all winter.

    and every chippy over there offers a superior choice of condiments, whether its malt vinegar or hp sauce.

    i have never had bad food in london, but the one thing that does set me a bit on edge is that many of my fave restaurants there have communal tables.
