Axel Foley wrote: And while we're at it, my ultimate wish for Prospect Heights is a good rock venue. Like, maybe Southpaw could move up to Washington Ave. But then I suppose whoever wanted less hipsters will be sorely disappointed.
Like so many times before in my life, I agree with Axel Foley. I'd love something with rock and funk and a decent stage and a nice sound system. Maybe something just the size of like Tonic or the Mercury Lounge, nothing huge, just something where you could pretty reliably go down on a wednesday night when you have nothing else to do, pay a 5 dollar cover, and see some good music. I like Southpaw and it's not too far of a hike, but I always kind of feel like five to seven hipsters there are judging me based on my clothes and maybe the way i rock out and stuff, and it seems so anti-rock and roll. -
A little live music venue would be pretty cool. Too bad Grand Space seems pretty strict on the type of events they'll throw or we could improvise! I actually don't like Southpaw much at all. It's a really awkward space and gets cramped too quickly.

I've only been there once to see a show, and it wasn't packed to the gills, so I thought it was pretty cool. I like the size of the place, and the fact that they have that loungy area.

Okay, even though I swore I would never resort to discussing supermarkets on the DH message board, I have a question:
I'm having a dinner party this weekend and will need to buy much food and things that I don't trust the Met on Vanderbilt to carry. You know, things like vegetables and stuff. Does anyone know if the Key Foods on 7th Aveune and Carroll will deliver to Prospect Heights? They used to deliver to me when I lived in the Slope. -

Not knocking the 7th Ave Key Food, but how about the GAP Green Market on Saturday morning, and order from Fresh Direct today for the things you won't be able to get there?

I'm not sure if that Key Food delivers this far, but you could call.

The best dentist in the world is in Clinton Hills - Dr. Charles Grannum - and I am the biggest chicken in the world when it comes to dentists! The guy actually kisses you on the forehead before and after he sticks the needle in - I will never go to another dentist. Pain free - tough to get an appt though!
I've been going to Dr. Grannum for years! He's the best and he always sends birthday and holiday cards! I also love the afrocentric vibe of the place....In the summertime, Dr. Grannum opens the french doors so you can look out into the garden when you get your teeth cleaned...he's the best. -

Wow, thanks for looking up the number for me. I might try to hit up the GAP Farmer's market if I'm awake on Saturday morning, but that plus the Fresh Direct combo would require a little more forethougt and planning than I usually exhibit. -

How about Costco? If you have a ride (and a membership...well worth the $35), you can get a ton of fresh fruit/veggies/meat/andeverything else you can think of---for cheap...if you're a small family or a single person, you should consider sharing the cost of the membership with someone.... -
I wish the violence would stop. Sometimes, when I'm huddled in the corner of my Washington Ave. apartment, covered with a tattered gingham blanket and sipping on a cup of lukewarm apple cider, I dream of a night without gunshots or the screams of a person being victimized on those hard, cold streets. Sometimes I think of my home in Oklahoma, on the farm with Ma and Pa and our milk cow Betty and the two cats Tom and Jerry. I want to go home and help them with the corn this year, but they would be saddened if I gave up my hopes of being a famous actor.

Yes! Exactly! -

Never been kissed---then again, I suspect Dr. G doesn't kiss girls if you catch my drift...nevertheless, I really, really like his toothside manner...

Butcher shop is a must. Union Market over in that other neighborhood across from us has good meat -- best damn tenderloin I've had in awhile, even though it cost $80 for 3 1/4 pounds -- but that's a hike.
More live music options.
Art-y movie theater. I'd buy the Pavilion as long as we can strictly enforce a NO TALKING NO CELL PHONES NO ANYTHING policy. Bonus points for serving beer... -
A 'Rich to Riches' in the nabe would be nice (diversify our dessert options) - nothing like overpriced rice pudding in colorful containers in a high tech setting - yum yum!!

'Rice to Riches' was not a successul business model in the pudding sense. It was--and possibly still is--a money laundering front for a gambling ring. Given the location and the amount of money going through it ($21 million per year I believe) would not be surprsing if there was a mafia connection.
So if you want to talk to some of the illegal gamling bodega guys and see if they'd be up for fronting a foodie dessert operation, maybe that would be a good start. -

No Way!! How could I have missed that story - I must have been travelling! Must admit - it was a great hoax! - gotta give 'em kudos for the ingenuity! -

That scene is classic! Also, there is a dentist scene with Rachel and the fiance she dumped (Harvey? I can't remember ... ) having a last fling in his dentist chair ...
Yes, I know ... I have a touch of "Friends-Related Geekdom" ...

This nabe really needs an Uncle Louie G's ices stand, on Vanderbilt would be great. Doesn't require a big space and would get a ton of foot traffic...they franchise. Anyone looking to invest? It's my family's fantasy to own one, or at least be involved in running it..... -

Rice to Riches is my favorite thing on the face of the planet. If I could eat their rice pudding at every meal, I would do it.
I would also be very excited to see an Uncle Louie G's. Particularly in the summer. -

Ever since I saw the Louie G's Promotional Hummer parked out front of the Park Slope store I havent had any desire to go there. -

If you are a knee-jerk SUV hater, then that's a perfect response!
But if you live in the neighborhood you realize that it's not a 'promotional Hummer' but Uncle Louie G's own Hummer. Yes, the ower actually uses it. And unlike a lot of the SUV owners in the neighborhood, he actually uses it to load and make deliveries between branches of his chain.
It's parked out there because he likes hanging out at that particular branch. And when the 2003 blackout hit, his Hummer was the largest source of light on Union Street near 5th Avenue as Uncle Louie G himself lit up the street and his store so he could give away his rapidly melting stock to neighborhood folk.
I think SUVs as a trend are nuts. But sometimes they do serve a purpose. And sometimes they do get used in a way that gives the owner a bit of justification in using them.
PS: For those who care, the Tea Lounge owner up on Union Street owns an Escalade. And he also uses it to transport stock to and from the Tea Lounge. -
I'm gonna plead ignorance on this one. Are Hummer's more cost effective than other types of transportation in regards to transporting goods?

mc wrote: I'm gonna plead ignorance on this one. Are Hummer's more cost effective than other types of transportation in regards to transporting goods?
Purely transportation? No. But if you use it as a billboard as well, it could be pretty cost effective... -
mc wrote: I'm gonna plead ignorance on this one. Are Hummer's more cost effective than other types of transportation in regards to transporting goods?
Perhaps not, but nobody said anything about cost-effectiveness.
At least he's actually using it to haul stuff. And does it regularly. And enjoys taking care of it also. I see no problem with it.
Now if you want to talk about the tricked out SUVs with the shiny rims that simply drive around and do not much of anything, then I'd agree.
But otherwise, let the guy have whatever vehicle he wants.
There are definitely too many SUVs out there. But that doesn't mean that some are actually put to decent use.
