If you are a knee-jerk SUV hater, then that's a perfect response!
And sometimes they do get used in a way that gives the owner a bit of justification in using them....
Yours/Louie G's is the dumbest excuse I've heard for having a Hummer yet. The are much better vehicles suited for deliveries, thats a no brainer. Is he delivering to the unpaved andes mountains villages under ak-47 rifle fire? No he's delivering to Brooklyn.
However that is the #1 vehicle for showing off how much money you have to blow and looking like a ass while doing so, all environmental and delivery issues aside.
"He lit up the block....", wow...thats soooo cool. Unfortnately my block did fine during the blackout we did'nt need any Hummers.
Sorry, no longer a customer here. -

He needs an excuse to have a hummer? He should have asked your permission before he bought it I guess. -

If you are transporting ice cream in Basra where fuel if 5 cents a gallon and you may be shot at and have to drive off road at high speed and run people over without affecting the steering then it is certainly the vehicle of choice.
In Brooklyn its idiotic, a cooled boxcar is what anyone with any sense would use. -

I did'nt say he needed my permission, I'm saying it's wasteful in a time when its inconsiderate and he lost a customer and I give my reason, whats yours? Do I need you permission to give my opinion? -

Give me a break. All I'm saying is that he's at least using it for more than eye candy. Sure, there are other options. But maybe that's just what he wants.
When compared to the blinged out SUVs that transport nothing but people with image-issues, I support Uncle Louie G in his choice of driving what he wants. Maybe it's not the perfect solution, but he actually uses it in a way most Hummer owners don't even think of using it.Captain M wrote: If you are transporting ice cream in Basra where fuel if 5 cents a gallon and you may be shot at and have to drive off road at high speed and run people over without affecting the steering then it is certainly the vehicle of choice.
Fine, tell Uncle Louie G he's selfish for driving a vehicle that he wants to drive.
In Brooklyn its idiotic, a cooled boxcar is what anyone with any sense would use.
And perhaps you have something he doesn't like personally that he can then scold you about. And you can two can duke it out! -

Do you know how much a Hummer weighs? more than an oridinary vehicle, its weight causes potholes and taxes the road. Also its emissions and fuel consumption are not bound by the "ususal" laws as it wieghs so much, I guess you might know asthma is city children is higher than anywhere else. I could go on..Jack wrote:
Nice way to end a discussion...are you in grammer school? If you (or anyone else) can come up with a GOOD reason to own a Hummer in brooklyn I'd love to hear it, fact is ...you cant.

??? Baffling. And completely off-topic.
We realize you are no longer a customer of Uncle Louie G. Congrats! I'm sure that by boycotting one Itatlian Ice vendor you have made a tremendous impact on the SUV industry that will bring it to its knees.
As for coming up with a reason one can own a Hummer in Brooklyn? I'm not arguing that. It's his own personal choice; that's my point. Not yours in any way.
The only discussion seems to be in your own mind. -
whoa, whoa, whoa, everyone settle down. somehow, in all of this debate about SUV's and their relative merit in and out of brooklyn, and their efficiency as italian ice delivery devices, we've lost sight of the real issue here: giggling at the term "promotional hummer."

teddyballgame wrote: we've lost sight of the real issue here: giggling at the term "promotional hummer."
It's hard to choose between that and the free "tossed salad". -
Jack wrote: [quote=mc]I'm gonna plead ignorance on this one. Are Hummer's more cost effective than other types of transportation in regards to transporting goods?
Perhaps not, but nobody said anything about cost-effectiveness.
At least he's actually using it to haul stuff. And does it regularly. And enjoys taking care of it also. I see no problem with it.
Now if you want to talk about the tricked out SUVs with the shiny rims that simply drive around and do not much of anything, then I'd agree.
But otherwise, let the guy have whatever vehicle he wants.
There are definitely too many SUVs out there. But that doesn't mean that some are actually put to decent use.
*I* said something about cost-effectiveness. So, I guess I'm nobody. Thanks Captain M for being a voice of reason. I didn't realize this was gonna start another war. I just don't see why anyone in Brooklyn *needs* to be driving a hummer, whether he uses it to transport stuff or not. -

I'm saying his choice is irresponsible and opulent, yet you support it...but unable to say why...even if his choice is a detriment to those in the community with regards to pollution, tax, environment and example to youth. -

I support it for the same reason I support your choice to boycott him.
It's kind of like berating others who smoke because you don't like smoking. Perhaps smoking does cause more of a chance of cancer and death. But it's ultimately a personal choice.
Oh, and if you're going to argue pollution you might as well come down equally hard on "FreshDirect" and their trucks that clog up the streets and start/stop every few buildings or so. Ditto with "NetFlix". The convenience of having a DVD mailed to you causes more driving and work than if you just walked down the block to the video store. -
More rhododendrons... that's what I'd like to see in PH...
Well, not really, I just wanted to deflect from the current line of conversation...
That, and I really like the word "rhododendron." Love the way it rolls off the tongue- say it with me, people!!! RHODODENDRON... ah... that's nice!

Snideness and bile aside, the fact of the matter is a delivery being made to any one store--whether it be Key Food, Met Food, C Town or even the Park Slope Food Coop--is one truck going from one place to another.
One major distrubution site taking goods from one warehouse to a smaller amount of retail outlets.
If there are six Key Foods nearby then only six stops are made. And that's it.
In contrast with "Fresh Direct" the delivery is based on how many people they have to deliver to each day. So if 30 people in a certain area order "Fresh Direct", that's 30 starts/stops of the truck at least. And not counting the amount of time it takes to deliver to boxes and the idling time of the truck that sits out there on the street spewing exhaust into the air. -
Oh, I meant to say "River birch". Mmm. The lovely River Birch, Rhododendrom & Weeping Willows.

MC are you familar with types of trees and how to tend to them. I have a great big yard and want to plant a tree. There are a few that I like but am not sure how hard they are to care for, etc. -

In case you did not notice smoking is not a personal choice any longer, in fact it is prohibited by law in (almost all) enclosed areas.
Your fresh direct point is flawed in that while deliveries are necesary, the Hummer is not a delivery vehicle, it's weight, emissions, and "social status" propagandization are much more detriment than an ordinary delivery vehicle. The use of the Hummer in this example is opulence, and only that. -

I don't know much about growing trees. I have a roof/deck with full broiling sun, so my choice of trees is limited. BBG may be a good source of tree planting tips. Also, my brother is a bit of an expert. If you have some more specific questions (i.e., types of trees you're interested in and/ or how much sun you get). If you wanna PM me, I could ask him. -

I'm a big fan of Japanese Maples... Beautiful range of colors, nice leaf shape, not too large, and (I believe) they increase you property value more than any other tree. -

I agree. It's totally unnecessary for me to drive to my own front door just to get my mail. -

come to the food coop any saturday afternoon and watch the famed 'gathering of the saabs', one of natures grandest sights. Saabs, volvos, and caravans swarming over the curb, spilling on to the sidewalk. quite a sight.
fresh direct delivery=keep your saab in the garage. -

Do you know how much Uncle Louie weighs? More than an ordinary human: his weight causes potholes and taxes the road. Also, his fuel consumption and emissions are not bound by the laws of physics. He probably causes asthma in small children. I could go on.
Seriously, the guy couldn't fit in a smaller vehicle, that's the bottom line.
Now, pray continue re the "promotional hummer," and the myriad personal reasons one may "choose a hummer."
ps: obviously I don't have the quote thing down. -
What I want to know is:
a) Where is the Brooklyn School of Hard Knocks?
b) is it accredited?
c) does it offer graduate degrees (insert B.S. joke here)?
d) how did Uncle Louie get to be the Official Ices and Ice Cream of the Brooklyn S.O.H.K.? Did he fill out a form or something?
and also, why would anyone want to paint their car bright yellow? It just makes your super expensive car look like a big ol' taxi.
(used to live on that block, pondered the Uncle Louie Transport Utility Vehicle way too much) -
