Car alarms! — Brooklynian

Car alarms!

Granted, there are far fewer annoying car alarms on my block than in previous years, but it only takes one to drive me berserk.
Now that the alarms go off for a shorter period of time in one shot, it's difficult for me to identify the culprit before the alarm stops - even though it will go off again when the next truck/ motorcycle goes by or the next rain drop falls on it.
I do leave notes on the windshield, when I can identify the vehicle (something like: "I just wanted to let you know...").
Any suggestions?

    Brick. Note. Tape.

    Through the window...
  • Leaving a note on the hood of the car under a brick or rock will get the message across.

Also, the car alarm ban needs to happen in this city. Gifford Miller lamed out on it long ago, and Bloomberg weirdly excluded car alarms from his noise proposal (and where are the results on that anyway?).
  • If the morons could just figure out how to USE their car alarms, it would be a lot more quiet.
  • Some people like to hear their car alarms! I see people outside my window setting them off again and again shaking their heads as if to say "Right? Sounds good...yea loud...LOOK AT ME I HAVE A CAR!"

    booooooooowp booooooowp
    Neeeee-ooooo Neeeeeee-ooo
    Pew pew pew pew pew
    DOOOOO DEEEEE DOOOOOO DEEEEEE

thats off the top of my head. I know it goes something like that!

That's twisted and horrible truth you speak.

When I was still living in Vermont I had these inbred-Jed type motherfuckers across the street from me who made my life hell. One day they bought a brand new, red pickup truck with a car alarm system. For the next few days, they'd hang out in front of their house, setting off the car alarm over and over and over, announcing to their fellow rednecks (sorta like smoke signals but with mullets, pro wrestling and Budweiser) that they had a new truck. Hell.

Every see a car rolling down the street with the alarm blaring? They are not a deterrance. My first job was as repo agent for a bank. We would take cars with their alarms howling. The false positive rate on the alarms and the fact that nearly every car alarm sounds alike in some way causes owners to ignore it. We'd get it back to the shop and disable it there.

They should be banned. If you want to stop car theives try LoJack. There is no indication that it is installed and causes the disposal time (time from theft to resale or chop) to hours instead of days.

When we purchased our used car last year, we were interested in Lo-Jack but were told that they only way to get it in NYC was to purchase a NEW car. You cannot have it installed on a older model car. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I would LOVE to have it for my car.
  • Vanderbilt between Park and Prospect past two EARLY mornings..black truck alarm sounding every twenty minutes.

If it's yours...CUT THE ALARM!!!! It's ridiculous already. Not to mention rude. :x
  • Stacy, I don't know why someone would say that. I bought a 2000 model car a few years ago and had a lo jack installed no problem.

Did you have yours installed locally? If so would you recommend the place that did it?
  • Mine was installed locally. Lo Jack sent a person out to my in-laws house (they have a driveway, Lo Jack wouldn't do an installation in the street) and he did it in about an hour. Maybe they don't have dealers here any more... But I would think you could take your used car to the proper dealership and have it done.
  • Thanks sooo much I will look into this.

    I like this idea.
I also think car alarms should go off on the car owner, not the car. Flashing lights and everything.
  • 911 is what 311 does. not that cops know what to do... but.... seems like more car alarms than ever right now! the other night there were 2 at once for almost an hour - this was on washington but then i coul also hear one on the other side of my apt. blasting on st.johns!!

i think you can also take down the lic.# and report to 311 and then a letter gets sent and then a fine after repeated offenses... but maybe i just made that up about the fine. but take down the car info and report!

    love the earplugs.
  • when I lived in Harlem (and my bedroom was on the street side of the building) I called 911 every six months or so over car alarms. and they were pretty responsive -- they'd send a tow truck within 20 minutes. yes, my sleep would be interrupted, but at least I knew that the jerk with the obnoxious car alarm going off at 2 a.m. would wake up sans car.
