Cattyshack review in NYT

edited November -1 in Park Slope
2005_5_cattyshack.jpgFrom the New York Times: "On a still-industrial strip of Fourth Avenue, just beyond the leafy residential quiet of Park Slope, this welcoming bi-level club is both bar and clubhouse, populated by diverse crowds of lesbians and their friends. The welcoming space is bigger and more polished than owner Brooke Webster's previous venture, the now-defunct Houston Street dive Meow Mix..."

"...Many varieties of the Sapphically inclined were visible on a recent night: boyish girls in Carhartts and their male friends, middle-aged couples, a bartender with a mohawk. The countercultural and the traditionalist should both find a place to feel at home here..."

So - is this a lesbian bar or not?
  • There's something bothering me about this place. I know! This lesbian bar doesn't have a fire exit! Enjoy your deathtrap, ladies!
  • Nah, the old place was the death trap without the fire exit. This spot is sweet. And it *is* a lesbian/gay bar.
  • I like this place. It's also a surprisingly pleasant spot to watch Sunday afternoon football (upstairs is best).
  • Subject: Catty Shack

Catty Shack is a great space but I have had a few problems with it...

They turned my gay boy friends away, all were coming for a friends bday night. I thought that was pretty lame.

What is with the cover charge?

The music is mostly hip-hop, I have been there when they have 80s or new wave, but I am over hip hop.

The coat check, $2 to leave a coat and $1 to pick it back up.

I know us lesbians have a bad rap for tipping, but the coat check cost and cover charge stink!
  • Subject: Catty Shack...

Jesus this place is the worst... the bartenders are the rudest, slowest, and most obnoxious bunch I have ever encountered... Fine, I can deal with that....

Anyway, I'm there drinking one night... and we all know lesbians are poor tippers... so I'm tipping a dollar every single drink.. that $6 for the redstripe plus $1... jesus.. 4 drinks no buy back, 5, 6.. nothing... so I stop tipping. The bartender at the end of the wouldn't give me a drink 30 seconds after closing the upper bar claiming I haven't tipped all night..

By the way I'm a straight boy with a lot of gay and lesbian friends... so when they want to go out I end up at the catty shack...

anyway... I got to get back to work... otherwise I'd go into more detail on the aggressive, impersonal, disgusting nature of this joint.
  • Subject: Kinda Agree with ya...

    Oh our beloved Clam Shack.

I'll address the straight boy above this post. You're kinda right, kinda wrong. First, as a gay chick, can the "all lesbians are bad tippers" - that's crap. I tip $1.00 every single drink and sometimes more. But like you, I don't get shit for it. No buy backs, etc. And just like Meow Mix the beers (and that's what I drink) are out of hand expensive. There is no way a shitty ass Red Stripe should be $6. But why is that?

Because the owner who has shitloads of money (ah the trust fund kids) - does not have one little bit of business smarts. Look at the size of this place? Are you kidding me? It must cost a fortune to run it. It's waaaaayyyy to big for a dyke bar in Manhattan, let alone Brooklyn. She could have bought a smaller killer spot and then the friggin beers wouldn't be $6 and $7.

Last week, I went upstairs and got a shot of Patrone tequila, $10, in a little piss ant shot glass. It was "gay boy" night upstairs. If I was a gay boy, let me tell you, it would have been a high-ball glass half-full. (So straight boy above, go on Wednesday nights, gay boys know how to pour drinks - for men).

So her lack of business sense is why Ginger's that old staple of older and/or more blue collar dykes on 5th ave, will still be around when the Clam Shack goes bust.

Stinker. Because as a dyke, I want it to succeed and god knows, the gay boys have 400 places to go in this city and we have about 5.
  • Subject: I Forgot...

And another pisser about this place...the music *sucks* not just a little either, it really sucks. The owner (jesus if we could get her out of there the place might succeed;) - also purports to be a DJ. God help us. Song. Stop. pause pause. Bad song. stop. pause pause. Bad song. stop...you get the idea.

Again, you go on a gay boy night upstairs, the lights are *low* (they are way brighter when women are there), and the DJ rocks. So I find myself at gay boy bars or gay boy nights. How sad.
  • Subject: catty shack

I will give the place one piece of credit: it is aptly named.

Another poster mentioned that there are only "5" places for lesbians to go.... I think it's a little more. The point is everybody knows everyone in that scene... shit, I'm far from the scene and I know enough people...

So, she slept her, she hates me, she slept with my roommate... it all contributes to the catty nature of the place....

Waaaaaaay too much attitude for my liking.. gay, straight or whatever...

As for the prices... and as someone with business sense.... you change that $6 redstripe to $5 and people will 1) drink more 2) tip better...

resulting in happier bartenders, happier customers and more business. I know what a red stripe costs... $1.20 to the shack... I just hate being screwed....
  • us gay boys have pretty slim pickings in the slope... when's gay boy night at CS?

Wednesday "Oink" and gay boy P.J.'s tea dance . . . but that *was* Sunday and I think might be taken over by the L Word. I haven't been.
