queen_of_pies thwarts bike thief

no lock ever touches my bikes now, because I can't afford to replace any of them. if they can't go inside, I don't go inside.
last night someone proved to me that my no-locking paranoia wasn't enough to hold on to a bike when a thief wants your ride. After riding home from work in the evening I carried my bike up the three stairs of our stoop, as always, leaned it against the railing and unlocked the outer door. Then I propped the door open and unlocked the inner hallway door, which put me about 4 feet away from where my bike was. After unlocking the hallway door I turned around and saw a man hopping off the stoop carrying my bike. I ran out of the building and down the stairs toward the thief, tripping on the bottom stair which sent me sailing into him; me, the bike, and the thief all sprawling on the sidewalk.

me and mr. thief scrambled to our feet, and I grabbed my bike and screamed 'let go of my fucking bike!' he took a few steps back--probably calculated that this shabby looking bicycle wasn't worth fighting this madwoman for--and said 'hey, I wasn't trying to take your bike.' what, then? trying to give it a tune-up? i picked up my bike and ran back into the building and turned to see him sauntering away.

him: 5' 8", not badly dressed, slight caribbean accent, hair long and slightly dreaded. me: nursing knee bruises and glad to have my bike.

  • Whoo-hoo! Craziness always pays off in the end. Hopefully that guy will have learned a lesson about taking people's bikes.

geez, man. way to be a total bummer!

let's all live in fear!!!!! oh no! everyone might be armed! let's all go hide under rocks and be glad were not gettin shot!!

    OH FEAR FEAR!!!

seriously tho... I think its fuckin great she did what she did. rock on!! if every "victim" reacted like that, I'd wager wed see a huge decline in such crimes.

fuck bike thiefs. and petty crackheads too (who are rarely, if ever, armed).

I'm glad queen_of_pies fought back, but there's a reason why drug dealers and others get to do what they do. They will hurt you.

Sad to say, but when Nicole DuFresne said, "What are you going to do, shoot us?"

Guess what? She was shot and killed.

Fighting back doesn't always mean you'll win.

  • Awesome, queen of pies! You sure gave him a *pie in the face*!
    Arm yourselves with pies!
  • im glad everyone is showing you love for this, pies. not only is it totally punk rock, it hilights that you dont always have to be a victim in brooklyn.

if someone tried to steal my bike, theyd be bleeding on the curb in no time

  • The queen reigns over bike theifing thug!
    Pie time for all bikers.

That will teach thugs from messing with the bike riding bunch.

    Queen of Pies,

I am surprised that BrooklynSwordStyle has not been on your case with regard to your responsibility to the "Social Contract" ... Did you report this to the police?

I would have caused more harm than good by showing up at the precinct and saying "someone tried to steal my bike. I don't know if I can identify him but he had dark skin and an accent."

The Social Contract is what we choose to make of it. Even though I didn't go to the police I beleive that in the larger scheme I did the right thing.

That was rude. And I don't appreciate it.
  • ha, cool, that's a picture i took when i lived on vanderbilt!

i kept that bike locked outside for 2 months, and the only damage was the seat getting stolen. guess i was lucky.
  • omg
that happened to my friend when he was visiting me. we stopped in front of the bodega btwn bergen and st. marks. my friend went inside and i stayed outside and smoked. the man that you described to me just came up to the bike and tried to carry it away right in front of me!
    i was like WTF!!?!?
and he said that he wasn't doing anything.
i always see him bummin around vanderbilt and can't believe that he would just do that right in front of me.
