When to call the cops...

A couple of nights ago I woke up to the horrible sounds of a woman being beaten up. From the sounds of the argument it was clearly by someone she knew (boyfriend? husband?). I've never heard something to terrible and I am ashamed to say that I didn't do anything about it. I know that it was coming from the building next to mine (the two buildings share a courtyard) but I couldn't tell what apartment the noise was coming from. Subsequently people have said that I should have called the cops and even if I only could have told them a building number that they would have investigated. Is that true? Can you call 911 with such vague information?

I've lived in the neighborhood for five years, and have had to call the cops a handfull of times. Even if you don't know where the sounds are coming from, they will send a squad car over to check it out. In that kind of situation it's better to err on the side of caution; can't really hurt and you can do it anonymously.

just imagine if you were on the street getting beat up and no one called 911 for you!
