When to call the cops... — Brooklynian

When to call the cops...

anonymous
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
A couple of nights ago I woke up to the horrible sounds of a woman being beaten up. From the sounds of the argument it was clearly by someone she knew (boyfriend? husband?). I've never heard something to terrible and I am ashamed to say that I didn't do anything about it. I know that it was coming from the building next to mine (the two buildings share a courtyard) but I couldn't tell what apartment the noise was coming from. Subsequently people have said that I should have called the cops and even if I only could have told them a building number that they would have investigated. Is that true? Can you call 911 with such vague information?
Thanks

  • Of course you can.
  • I've lived in the neighborhood for five years, and have had to call the cops a handfull of times. Even if you don't know where the sounds are coming from, they will send a squad car over to check it out. In that kind of situation it's better to err on the side of caution; can't really hurt and you can do it anonymously.
  • just imagine if you were on the street getting beat up and no one called 911 for you!

& even if the cops come & nothing was really going down, atleast the people will shut up!
