farmer's market local?
Subject: farmer's market local?
question to the group.at the saturday farmer's market @ grand army plaza, i've seen some vendors with fruit/vegetable boxes just like from the supermarket... aren't the vendors there supposed to be local farmers? and not just resellers?
wouldn't this be grounds for getting kicked out of the farmer's market?
thanks in advance for your feedback

Greenmarket does site visits - they not only require for the stuff to have local origin, but the farmer/baker/whomever must be there from time to time and not just hire someone to vend for them on Saturdays
what are they selling? bananas?
then again, they might just be recycling boxes.... -

Wait, I'm confused. If they are working farmers doesn't that mean that they have to sell and ship their goods somehow (other than the farmer's market)? So I'd assume that they were using packaging that they use in the normal course of business.
Unless I'm missing something :? -

i would GUESS that boxes with generic labels (like "strawberries") are made by a third party and sold to farmers in general, not just those associated with a certain brand, and that if there is something about the design or size of those boxes that makes them particularly good for a particular fruit (or just make it easier to keep track of what's on the truck), then lots of farmers might buy them.

Don't forget to bring your old clothes...
Saturday, January 19
This is a list of the farmers who are part of the Greenmarkets around the city: http://www.cenyc.org/greenmarket/ourfarmers
Second Chance Saturdays
Recycle your unwanted textile materials at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket every Saturday, 8 AM - 4 PM through March 2007
Monday, January 21
Material Mondays
Recycle your unwanted textile materials at the Union Square Greenmarket every Monday, 8 AM - 6 PM
And this is what's so great about Greenmarket: http://www.cenyc.org/greenmarket/whygreenmarket
Q, I'd be really shocked if any of the farmers were playing this dirty. There's quite a bit of oversite from the Greenmarket people and - from what I hear - the farmers pay attention to what the other farmers are doing...
Say hi to the cute old lady from Tellos Egg farm for me! -

Well the controversy about this is long and deep. Understand that Greenmarket is just one of several farmer's markets. Contrast with Real Food Market http://www.realfood.info/ each has differnet rules about who can sell. The Farmers market on 5th Ave and, is it 1st?, is NOT a Greenmarket but a Community Market http://www.communitymarkets.biz/index.php

the ones whom i remember with the boxes weren't there this morning
of the vegetable vendors there, they used plastic containers
apple cider good as always
a frozen donut lying underneath the stand

my guess is they're using boxes from grocery stores so they don't have to pay for them.

I did not realize that vendors had to use boxes made locally for the produce and other items sold at the market. I guess the egg lady will have to make her own cartons, Depaulo Turkey will have to make their own plastic contains and the Pickle Man will have to start blowing glass etc...

Subject: Fresh greens?
Never noticed the grocery store boxes, but I have noticed lots of fresh green vegetables for sale at the GAP market even in January! How can that be? I understand that lots of root vegetables and apples are picked earlier in the season and kept in cold storage for sale thoughout the winter, but kale and other perishable leafy vegetables?!?! -

Kale doesn't grow when it's hot - it's a cold weather veg.
Also some of those farmers use green houses -- which is how I assume the Evolutionary Organics lady keeps up with the delicious microgreens, choys and salad stuff.
Except she wasn't there a couple weeks ago -- anybody happen to notice if she's back? White tent, parkside, between the road and the path/entrance closer to Park Slope. -

this brings up a question
i've purchased baked goods like apricot hamentashen before
that for sure was mass produced. when i read the label it even had HFCS
and they sell the pies too.
i think these may be the quaker baked goods label
but what do quakers know from hamentashen?
their hamentashen tastes like buttermilk pastries. blech
one of the vegetable/fruit vendors has them on a side table
and one regular bread vendor sells the brand too
are those allowed? -
