SMITHERS needs a good home
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to look for a new home for my dog Smithers.
Because of changing conditions of our daily lives, we feel that Smithers will be better off in a home where HE is the center of attention.
Smithers is an extremely affectionate and loving dog with a lot of energy despite his age. He loves walks, treats and getting lots of attention. He’s also so damn cute!
Important details:
•Age – approximately 11 years old (adopted from a shelter 10 years ago)
•Weight – 22 pounds
•Breed – Jack Russell/Beagle mix
•Color – tri (brown, black & white…and a little distinguished grey)
•Neutered
•All vaccinations completely current
•No health problems
•Rarely barks
•NEVER aggressive towards other people or children
•Loves other dogs
•EXTREMELY affectionate. Loves your lap and getting a belly rub.
•Loves chasing squirrels in the park
•Completely indifferent (never aggressive) to children and would not be an ideal pet for a kid since he ignores them. Kids tend to want to ride or chase him…he’s only interested in adults with treats…
•Not ideal for a home with cats. He likes them, they DO NOT like him.
Small adoption fee applies and will be donated to a rescue shelter. Must be willing to provide references. Must provide your own transportation for pick-up.

Finding a home for an 11 year old dog will likely be difficult, no matter how cute he is. Uprooting him from the only home he's known for 10 years may be more damaging than him not being the center of attention.

Honestly - if someone is giving up their (super-adorable) dog of 10+ years, personally I presume it's more of a have-to than a want-to situation...
What a cutie, though. It makes me sad as well. He *almost* makes me wish I didn't already have kitties, which is saying something! -

I'd like to believe that but I've seen too many people give up older pets for ridiculous reasons. Check craigslist to see how many people try to do it and if you're not a huge softie like me, check out the NYCACC. Many elderly dogs and cats are surrendered by owners, not many of these pets live long enough to be adopted. -

It is a have-to situation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and none of my reasons would change the minds of die-hard animal lovers. I'm going to (and have) get "hate emails" no matter what reasons I list.
HOWEVER, I am happy to report that Smithers has found a new home with a family on Long Island where he has his own fenced in yard and a stay-at-home mommy to call his very own. I just packed his things and tucked him into her car and said my goodbyes. A sad day for me but a new beginning for a sweet little boy who deserves the love he will no doubt get from these kind people. -
