sick dog? looking for input

i leave my 10.5 month-old puppy in her crate every weekday when i go to work. three times in the past month and a half ive come home to a crate full of diarrhea. upon taking her out, she usually as a bit more to expel, and at the end there is usually a little bit of blood. she acts completely normal (eating, drinking, running, playing) and is totally fine for the rest of the night and the next day. should i be worried or should i just assume that she ate something that she shouldnt have or maybe just has a sensitive stomach? any input is appreciated.

  • If there is blood in her stool, take her to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

Even if it is an infection that resolves before you manage to get her there, often other underlying conditions can be picked up. That's how my cat's hyperthyroidism got diagnosed.

The occasional loose stool is nothing to worry about. Gobs of shit with blood in it is pretty serious.

  • Yeah, I'd bring a vet in on that.

  • let me clarify. there is NO blood in the diarrhea in her cage. the blood is not actually in the poop. the blood comes AFTER she has gotten everything out and she still tries to poo more. im thinking the few drops of blood are just from having so much diarrhea and straining to go to the bathroom. and we're not talking about a lot of blood -- just a few drops after she has gotten all the diarrhea out. does this change your opinion?

sorry if this is kind of gross -- im not sure how to make it sound better.

  • My dog has diarrhea like you decribed about once a month. (With a few drops of blood at the end.) It usually lasts about one to 5 days. If it doesn't clear up in a few days, you should take her to the vet. But from what my vet told me, irritation from eating nonedible things (like sticks, rocks, dental floss etc..) can scratch the small instestine and there can be blood for days to even a couple of weeks. I have stopped worrying about a few drops of bright red blood. Large amounts of dark blood or clots needs immediate attention. My vet also told me to watch for changed in appetite and behavior before rushing him to the vet every time. We live in the city and my dog eats EVERYTHING!

  • You definitely need to take your dog to the vet. Be sure to bring a fresh stool sample with you. They will need it for a diagnosis.

    that. ^
(and if you need a vet, there's quite a bit of discussion of the choices already detailed on this board.)

In the meantime, get a can of plain pumpkin, and feed her some - it might bring the poop together, and couldn't hurt. Yogurt (again, plain) is also good to help her digestive system regain the good flora lost in the upset.

I wonder if your dog has giardia - but really, it could be plenty of other things so get her diagnosed.

  • hmmm, she is totally fine now. normal poop, eating, everything...

this has only happened 3 times, 2 times with drops of blood at the end. my dog is behaving normally with no signs of pain. when it has happened, it hasn't even lasted a full day. im gonna wait it out before dishing out hundreds of dollars at the vet. thanks for all the advice.
