Most Overrated in Prospect Heights? — Brooklynian

Most Overrated in Prospect Heights?

People on this board are constantly giving their opinions about how a particular place sucks, they hate such and such - so with that in mind, what place in Prospect Heights do you think is the most overrated? This is a place that most likely has certain qualities - it's not a bad place, just a bit too hyped.

I nominate Soda - the elixir of life to many on this board - just an average bar in my opinion.

  • I'd agree Soda's pretty average in compare with other areas of NY, but to this neighborhood, which, in the immediate area off where I live, has few choices and by that reasoning, Soda and other bars that I would've passed on in other neighborhoods, rates a lot higher with me.
  • Ditto. I was delighted to discover it--as a place to go and be able to stumble home from with minimal effort, it's fairly awesome.
  • I've never cared for either El Rey de Los Castillos de Jagua or its cousin across Flatbush. Perhaps they aren't rated highly enough to be overrated, but some people seem to like them.

The food at City Lighting was overrated. Then it went away. It pains me to say it, but Biscuit was also kinda overrated.

Tavern on Dean: overpriced, not that good. Again, not sure if it is popular enough to qualify as overrated.

St. Mark's Bistro: decent, but overpriced and certainly not as good as people said when it opened. And I've had some really abysmal service there.

    City Lighting, totally.

St. Mark's Bistro, may it burn in Hell.

I'm not a fan of Franny's, though it's mostly due to atmosphere (they need some sound baffling, the exposed brick is too much). You have to shout when you're there.

Biscuit, overrated. Yeah it pains me too. I still ate there, though.
  • Biscuit totally sucked. Carolina BBQ, my ass! City Lighting was bad too. Franny's was on the meh side.

But, I'll defend Soda to the death. Just not this week.
  • Soda is mediocre at best, IMO
  • Biscuit was great when it first opened, as soon as they started getting lines out the door it went downhill fast.

Soda is a nice place where you can actually get decent seating and service and food and still hear people sitting on the couch across from you. You can also choose between fancy beers and PBR's for a few buck on budget nights. I dont get why anyone would say Soda is overrated? Compared to what?

Frannys was way expensive for fancy "pizza".

Yeah, true. I am pretty appreciative that they serve Jever on tap.
  • The Most overrated in Prospect Heights is James Caldwell, hands down

Wow. I obsessively love Castillo de Jagua--for one thing it's crazy cheap and you get tons of food. Maybe it's not the absolute best food on the planet, but it's pretty darn good, especially for what you're paying.

I couldn't disagree more about Tavern on Dean, either. I've only been there for brunch, but I think it's a great deal and the food is delicious.

I've never been to SMB or City Lighting.

Biscuit was okay. Again, I was glad to have a barbeque place in the neighborhood, but it wasn't fantastic or anything.
  • Daily Heights is overrated. Real life is better.
  • This board is overrated. Most people (myself included) do nothing but complain. This thread is a prime example. Digital Buffalo wrote a post complaining that people complain too much, which started a thread where people only complained more.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    :cry::cry::cry:
  • Franny's could not be any more overrated (especially when compared to La Villa).
  • I'd say Tavern on Dean is underrated, and I hope it stays that way.
  • You have to take this stuff in context.
None of the places mentioned are destination places worth a trip from elsewhere in themselves. But Soda is a great neighborhood bar, and Franny's is a great neighborhood restaurant. Tavern on Dean is a great neighborhood spot for cheap big portions of comfort food and beer.

If you don't think El Gran Castillo de Jagua is delicious (although unhealthy), I'm curious about what you've ordered there. Granted there are many similar places scattered around the city, but these "Latin lunch counters" (Jim Leff nomenclature) rival Chinatown for value and good cheap eats.
  • City Lighting- Had a GREAT burger and sweet potato fries. That's all I miss, although I don't see what use I have for Burrito Bar with La Taqueria four blocks away.

Biscuit- Went downhill quick after being ok at first. Definitely overrated.

Franny's overrated? No way. The food there is amazing, even though I do think I wind up spending a bit too much for pizza and wine there every time. Neither of the other two "gourmet" pizza spots in the neighborhood (Pepperoncino, La Villa) come close.

Why go to La Villa when you can have Totonno's, Grimaldi's, etc. The pies at Oscar's on 7th are a million times better as well.

Most overrated in PH was definitely Biscuit. The comparisons in articles to places like Blue Smoke were comical. Their BBQ grilled veggies were some veggies with BBQ sauce squirted on top.

Funny. But of course, that's not in Prospect Heights.:lol:

The Park Slope Co-op is the best place in the neighborhood...

    ...FOR ME TO POOP ON!
  • Subject: most overrated!!!

I would say beast, no atmosphere, expensive food..St marks Bistro is closed, Franny's yuppi and hipster central...Burrito Bar, very expensive and most over rated and popular with the hipster. Toms!!!
  • I think slamming hipsters is overrated.
  • BrookFetish wrote: I think slamming hipsters is overrated.
    It's definitely become trite.
  • BrookFetish wrote: I think slamming hipsters is overrated.
I agree and put forward that pontificating trolls who have no concept of punctuation, capitalization and spelling - that flood the board with their paranoid, illucid rants are seriously overrated.

With that said...say goodbye to hipsterssuckass!
  • I find Beast's food to be expensive and overrated. I love the alcohol and staff though :)
  • I forgot to mention, I'm overrated - by a lot!

To read the nymetro review of Franny's I expected nirvana (maybe unfair) but I'd rather take the trip to Grimaldis.

Biscuit was always a bit uneven though I loved the idea of having that kind of food nearby.

The home of the carneviento isn't overrated in my book b/c of how cheap it is.

In the end, many things may be overrated but I appreciate living in a neighborhood that has options.
  • Subject: I, however, have always been underrated ;)

I think part of being overrated is overhype or trying too hard to be something. For instance, when Half's chalkboard out front advertised itself as a "Lifestyle Store," I swore I'd never set foot in the place, unless it started selling condoms.

As such, the other place that elicits a big "meh" from me is the Italian place right next to Acme Pet Supply. I admire what they're doing (independent, original pizzas and dishes), but it's not quite on: overpriced, limited menu, and overly bright atmosphere for what seems to be more than just a family pizza joint.
  • Is Franny's still in business? Everyone's referring to it in the past tense. I kinda wanted to try it, even though I'm not a big fancy pizza guy.

Is Muddy Waters still in business? I went there like last week, it was open and the woman was nice (she's always been nice to me).
  • Subject: Re: I, however, have always been underrated ;)

That's Amorina. The whole pizzas and entrees are overpriced, but the slices are a terrific value: between $2-3 for a large slice prepared with the same artisanal care as the more expensive pies. The sausage and mushroom slice is very good.
