Most underrated in Prospect Heights — Brooklynian

Most underrated in Prospect Heights

I figured I'd turn it around a little so we can all get back to the positive side of things.

I vote for Yummy Taco, as I have many times before. It's so good and so cheap. I promise, it's not just a clever name.

I also vote for Carl's Place on Underhill. I don't think I've ever read anything about it on these boards, but I went there for dinner the other night and it was real, real good. It was expensive, for sure, and they do like charge extra for everything, but the people were really nice and the food was delicious. Free soup on a cold October evening, hard to beat. I had a jerk burger that was great, my friends had wings and fried chicken and stuff, everything looked real good. In fact, my friends, who both live in DC, cited Carl's Place as a good reason to relocate to Prospect Heights.

If I recall correctly, Isa's gynecologist loves that place!

Finally someone pays attention when I talk about my gynecologist.
  • Wow, I was such a poor speller back in May.
  • I don't read much about the Islands, on Washington Ave. around here, but it's something of a cult favorite around these parts. The woman who runs it is super-friendly, the food is pretty much homecooked and delicious, and the atmosphere, or lack of it, is actually charming. Now, if only delivery didn't take two hours.
  • I don't shut up about the Islands. It's my favorite place in the neighborhood. See this blog entry from April.

It's been a while since someone brought it up, but everyone loves that place.
Here's a few of the links where it was discussed before:

  • Indeed, the Islands is fabulous.

I find a good strategy to get my food in a reasonable time frame is to call ahead and then go pick it up. Totally, utterly worth the walk.

I've never taken out- I always eat in the upstairs area. I have to try ordering from there to go (although then I couldn't get the delicious curry shrimp or calypso shrimp).
  • I have to go with Hing Lung, its fresh, cooked in view, and brown rice, no fooling price.
  • I am not saying that Bob Law's is good. It may, however, be underrated. The catfish and shrimp are fresh and the sides, like greens, mac and cheese, yams, are pretty good.

I agree. I've only been once, but I had some respectable shrimp and chips, and the sides were also tasty. For some reason the place doesn't get as much mention as a lot of other places that aren't as good.
  • What's with Mitchell's on Vanderbilt?

If you're not a snob, Yummy Taco rules. The plastic trays are a little scary, but I don't eat food directly off the trays, so it's fine. But yeah, good, cheap eats. Plus, IMO, the woman behind the counter is superfly.

Plus, you've gotta hand it to them on the name. Can you think what a disaster "Yucky Taco" would have been?

I've tried the place once so far. It's simple decent food that delivers what it promises. The pork chops were a little dry, but very flavorful. All the sides were good.
  • Yummy Tacos has very good fresh flour tortillas.

I tried Mitchell's once and was not impressed. It is very ordinary soul food.

I'd agree that it's not "impressive" but it definitely fills a niche. Bob Law's has a lot of the same things (at least side dish-wise) and is definitely better.
  • I couldn't help but notice that someone nominated Tavern On Dean as "Overrated."

I must respectfully disagree. Their dinner menu isn't that exciting, but we have been for brunch several times, and I love it so much that I actually get teary-eyed with emotion and happiness! Especially when they bring out the little napkin-covered basket of warm mini muffins and croissants with the pots of jam and marmalade.

It is SOOOOO good, and for $12 per person (which includes coffee and a free breakfast drink) I believe that it's the best brunch deal in the nabe.

Plus, when it's warm, the back garden room is nice.

I like it. Very "neighborhoodie". The crowd is full of regulars. The bartenders are ridiculously nice. The lighting is amazing. Oh, and the food and drink are good, too.

Plus, its one short block from my apartment.
  • I nominate brunch at New Prospect Cafe as underrated.

I'd have to say that my breakfast/brunch barometer is Eggs Benedict- how is it at Tavern on Dean?
  • Fermented Grapes. All of their reccomedations have been awesome.
    Also, our squirrel population.
  • mc wrote: Also, our squirrel population.
    True. Ours are especially succulent.

Well, I spotted one sweet looking black squirrel in Park Slope on 6th Avenue on a tree in front of that church that's between Sterling Place and Park Place on Sixth Avenue. Was about to grab my camera to take a shot when some numbnut passed by and made some noise and scared the fella away.

I've never seen a black squirrel in Brooklyn before. Only in City Hall Park and Madison Square Park in Manhattan. Sure sign something's up!

    Damn, that's my barometer, too.

I've had them here - excellent. They have a version with smoked salmon that is insane.

A few winters ago there was a black squirrel in the backyard behind my apt. My downstairs neighbor told me about it, but I thought she was nuts-until I saw it for myself.
