Subject: Trader Joe's - opening at Atlantic and Court?

I am probably behind the times on this-but, I just found out. is there really a large enough spot for this there? does anyone know what store/site it is taking over and if there will be any parking?

I already know there won't be any liquor/wine sales, poo!

  • umm, why isn't the full name of the store coming up in my thread title?

  • yep, there is a TJ's going in. Yes, there is a large enough site (I go to school 2 blocks away). I've even talked with people at the TJ's in Manhattan and they confirmed it. BUT, it's taking them forever to get going already. They've had the spot for quite a while now with absolutely no construction what-so-ever. So it'll be a while.

From what I understand, the building used to be a bank. But it's been vacant for a while now.

  • ah, ok, then I know the site. Will they be having underground parking for the store does anyone know? Parking is a nightmare over there!

Yes, my son works for TJ's. He says that they will be opening this summer (if it's anything like the new Union Market just tack a few months onto the projected date). I wouldn't count on the parking.

Does he cashier? I always wonder if they tell them to be friendly and super chatty in the training, or what?!

They all do all of the jobs there...and I haven't asked but I'm pretty sure that they are told to be super friendly and smile allot.
  • I was so hoping for an underground parking lot!

If a building is landmarked can they build an underground parking lot?

Never been to a trader joe's what is the big allure to it? I looove Fairway do you think TJ is better, worse or about the same?
  • I for one welcome our new overcrowded, not-very-good food national chain food stores.

For certain items, TJ's is great. I love the store, but it's in no way a replacement for Fairway. I wish that Fairway would open up a location in downtown Brooklyn - it would be a lot more convenient than having to schlep over to Red Hook w/o a car!

It's comparing apples and oranges! There are things that you can get at TJ's that are hard to get elsewhere and you get kind of ... addicted to them. Whenever I go up to Amherst, I find myself stocking up. It's also great for College Students, nice easily packaged convenient but relatively healthy food.

All that said, I am hoping that son has not been abducted by a cult. Those smiling cheerful faces are strange.

It's highly unlikely, especially seeing that there is a subway tunnel under there.
  • You don't have to go to Amherst for Trader Joe's. There's one in Manhattan on 14th Street near 3rd Avenue. No parking but subways galore.
  • And if you have a car the new location in Rego Park has lots of parking...and for many parts of Brooklyn it's a shorter drive than going to Fairway. I am sad they took away the helium balloons though.
  • Went to the one in Rego Park just this weekend-it is no way closer to Park Slope than Fairway.

Anyway, 2 totally different stores IMO.
  • Now I cant wait to check it out ;)
  • Subject: parking

There is parking, although somewhat expensive, across the street under the Y.
  • Ah-will have to look into that when and if the TJ's ever opens. In the meantime, i am satisfying my craving for cheap organic fancy-ish foods by going to the TJ's in Rego Park yet again this weekend-can't wait!

Um, yeah. Thanks. And there I was thinking that the only TJ's in "this area" was in Amherst. You just saved me an 8 hour drive! :?:
  • what's the best way to drive to Rego Park TJ's from PS? Do they have a wine store? Is it a zoo like Manhattan? I can't deal with the crowds in Manhattan's TJ.

My mom lives in PA and there is one about 1 mile from her house. I stock up a few times a year.
  • No liquor or wine at any of the TJ's in NY except for the one in Manhattan. When we were there last weekend-it was crowded-but, not crazy crowded-does that make sense? probably as busy as Key food on the weekend
  • Oh my god, I remember the lines when that place first opened up. It was insane.

TJ's wine shop at Union Square has to be kept separate from Trader Joes store due to some kind of archaic laws.

  • Gotta chime in here about the liquor laws in NY. Grocery stores are allowed to sell beer, wine stores can only sell wine and spirits. If they changed the law and allowed grocery stores to sell wine and spirits, a lot of wine stores would go out of business. Big stores like TJ's can buy in huge quantities, they have the money and storage space. They could sell it for a lot cheaper because of the discounts of buying in bulk. Sure, some people would still want the recommendations you can get from a wine store. But too many people would take their business to the big stores. In a sense the "archaic" liquor laws of NY protect the small wine stores.

P.S. I'm still half asleep so I hope I explained that halfway coherently. :)

Yeah, the one in DC is only like 4 hours away!
  • several in NJ and PA too..or just go to Westchester!

Who knows how to drive to Rego Park from PS? What's the best way and how long does it take?
