Noisy neighbor and an unresponsive board — Brooklynian

Noisy neighbor and an unresponsive board

Help! The guy that lives below me is the noisy neighbor from hell. I have tried writing letters to my board and management company to no avail. They could care less. My family can't sleep at night because of the constant noise. The guy is not even a shareholder! He is a sponsor apartment sublet - I have tried to contact the sponsor too with no luck. Calling 311 is a waste of time. If they do come the guy won't open his door so the cops just leave but m,ost of the time they just don't show up. What can my family do?

  • Make a mix cd-r of the worst most vile music, put it on the stereo, point the speakers towards the floor, crank the volume and then leave the house for a few hours.

I sympathize with you. I have my share of noise also. I can't stand that noise laws are not enforced. It's too late when someone is killed for it. Yea 311 does not work. I can't believe the cops just leave if the door goes unanswered. In this day & age, I would think the police have smarter alternatives, geez. What kind of noise is that inconsiderate *cough*bastard making btw?

I've yet to see if it works, but you should try it. I emailed Mayor Bloomberg about how police do not take Quality of Life/Operation Silent Night seriously. Finally 3 months later a police Sargeant arrived at my home saying it took so long to get to us cos of "red tape". I told him of the problem. He said next time it happens call the precinct. I asked will a couple of officers arrive? He said, "Yea we'll give him a summons." He even said he'll drive down the block sometimes.

We'll see when the weather gets warm.

PS. It may help to say things like "I'm afraid of doing something stupid or rash to this guy". This way, you & they have it on record. No city likes being sued for not acting on a law. Yes, unreasonable noise is illegal. Don't make a direct statement of threat though. I think they could take you in for that.
  • Thanks for the sympathy and tips!
Chucky I will definitely try writing Bloomberg, it can't hurt. Timmy I actually have tried blasting opera at him - he just keeps going. Daver thanks for the websites the second one was really helpful.
