my favorites are Mura, Bar toto, beast, rice thai, beet, la villa, and melt. All got really decent prices and great food.

we had a grand meal at java (indonesian) for a good price in a pleasant atmosphere the other night.
the bar specials at long tan are a good deal, too. -

I didn't think the food was so great at Long Tan.
How about Tempo? They have a prix fixe (not sure which nights) that includes my favorite dish there, buccatini with pistachio pesto. -
Try Magnolias on 12th st & 6th ave,
good food and nice atmosphere -

Long Tan is great for what it is -- easy going, pleasant room, cheap bar dinner specials and
a really really delicious Asian greens side. If you like greens.
Plus it's good for vegetarians and carnivores, like green "jungle curry" for vegetarians who like heat. Plenty of their food is mediocre, but no worse than Song or other local joints, and a few of their things are really good.
Tempo is a little stuffy and a little more expensive. Last I checked they were doing the prix fixe every night.
I don't think any of the 5th Ave restaurants are too bad these days. Only a few of them are super delicious, but those tend to be more expensive.
For reliable cheap wings burgers fries chili etc, there's always Bonnie's -
mmmm.... all of these sound good. Can't wait to hear more recommendations. Thanks to those of you who have responded so far!
-
my favorites in the hood are:
song (thai)
oshima (sushi)
chiles and chocolate (oaxacan)
la taqueria (mexican)
franny's (thin crust pizza) -
Am I the only one who finds Bonnie's filthy and their burgers, eh, ok?
Anyway, there are tons of good places on 5th Avenue. We like Song, Cocotte, Tempo, Al di La (if you want to spend more), Coco Roco, 200 5th (if you don't mind the noise from the attached bar), Pepperoncino (also more spendy), Moutarder.
We also like Magnolia on 6th Avenue up by 12th Street, and Yamato on 7th for Japanese.
man, that scrollable streets site sure needs to be updated! -

depends on what you get. i quite like the spicy beef salad, and the $10 bar special steak dinner is good when i need my red meat fix.
in general, i least like the most "entree-ish" part of the menu. -

Agreed. So many people rave about Long Tan, but when I went, I was disappointed. The menu struck me as limited (meat heavy), slightly greasy, and trying too hard to impress with unexpected things I don't care to eat.
Long Tan does a lot of deep frying, which I personally don't like, as there's nothing I fear more than biting into "fresh" fried food that's ice cold in the middle and has been sitting in a freezer for a year. -
I vote Johnny Mack's for burgers (so good, and they don't get closed down by the health dept) and Anthony's for pizza.

Their menus seem similar to me because they both have a lot of deep-fried items and meat. But if you like that type of thing, you found your restaurants. Lon Tang has a fancier interior.

Agree on Miracle Grill, Watana Siam, Rice Thai, and Johnny Mack's.

I have not been to Black Peal because I heard they have TVs on. Anyone know if this is true? -

a lot of meat both places, definitely, but i don't usually get anything deep fried at long tan (except the onion strings if i get the steak), and we got the rijstaafel at java, which had one fried item (out of something like 12). i'm not saying you have to like either place--neither is my favorite spot in brooklyn--but it's hardly chick-fil-a. -
