fleas and ticks

I've never had a dog in NYC before. Are fleas a big problem here in Brooklyn? I'll talk to the vet but I wanted to hear the dog owners' opinions.

I'm from tick country so I'm used to them requiring treatment year-round (usually frontline, which treats fleas and ticks). In all of my time in the park and upstate in the woods, I've yet to see a tick here so I'm wondering if the pooch will need anything at all for them.

Thanks!

  • there are definitely fleas here.
  • I got a dog one March from Minnesota. They have super hard winters there, so she didn't come Frontlined. She immediately picked up ticks in Prospect Park.

I tend to skip a couple months of Frontlining in the winter, but really
    I don't know.
How hard of a freeze do you need to get, and for how long? Do ticks go dormant or ?
It's in the 40s today, for instance. (Gorgeous morning in the park, I might add. :D )
It was pretty early Spring when my dog got bit like crazy. Frontlining her made them drop off immediately . . .

  • I think because it doesn't get too cold here, it's better to be safe than sorry. My cat Penny didn't have fleas when he walked into my house, but that was in Minnesota in February! Generally, the ground is covered with snow from November to April there, which would rather make it hard for fleas and ticks to thrive outdoors during that time.
