  • Wow, maybe they hired some of the same employees as Key Food. I've been screamed at for failing to say "thank you" to a customer. And I was polite to him too! At least, until he started screaming at me.
  • Same here - was extremely put off by the staff at the 7th Ave UM. While in the produce section, an employee bumped into me, huffed and rolled his eyes before rushing off. Yes, it is a tight space and people will be bumping into one another but an "excuse me" would've been nice.

The cashiers are the worst offenders of all. I am trying to cut back on my plastic bag usage so I bring canvas bags to the market now. There were 2 women behind one register (I assumed one was there to bag) and when I pulled my bag out, one goes "Yeah you can start doing that off to the side..." and wouldn't bag anything. She eventually got frustrated that I was not moving fast enough and grabbed the bag from me and started repacking it. At C-Town, they may put a carton of eggs on the bottom of the bag with milk on top of it but they have never been that brisk.

I considered asking for a manager but just assumed I would receive the same treatment. I don't want to stop going there because things are a lot fresher and seem to last longer than what I was picking up in C-Town but I don't want to be charged $8.99 for a jar of pasta sauce and then get verbally sh*t on by the staff.
  • If so many employees act crappy, maybe their boss is a jerk, who should make efforts to boost his employees' morale.
  • Subject: GO BACK TO BURGER KING

This is a no brainer ,if the clerks are jerks and are not happy with their jobs they should quit ,rather then abuse the clients.

It's harder than most people think to find good cashiers, especially if you have a boss who refuses to actually look for them. Most good cashiers aren't usually willing to stay in those jobs for very long since the pay isn't too great. If they don't actively look for and interview people but instead find 1 or 2 cashiers then rely on word of mouth, then they will get more of the same. As a cashier (and I think I'm pretty good at my job) when a business consistently employs rude and incompetent people, it's like a big f you to their customers. What they're saying is they know people will continue to shop there, get treated like crap but still give them their money. They won't care until they start losing money, that's what it all comes down to.
  • After having eyes rolled at me one too many times, I'm writing an email of complaint to the UM "info" email address. I can't take those snotty cashiers anymore.

If Union Market is charging its customers $6.00 for a small head of not-so-fresh lettuce, they should use some of the obscene profit to offer competitive salaries to attract professional and customer-friendly staff. If they can't afford to pay their rent, hire good people, and make a profit on sales, they should pack up and leave.

Why put yourself in a bad mood paying too much for crappy food thrown in a bag by someone who curses at you?

Screw Union Market. I'm going to Trader Joe's -- a quick ride on the Q train brings you right to 14th Street where you can get a nice bag of inexpensive, organic, tasty food packed by super friendly cashiers.

    Direct them here.

I went to Union Market on 6th Avenue and Union Street and I asked a person behind the deli to get me something and they said "no," so I said, "I'd like to speak with your boss." When they saw I meant business, they immediately served me. But why should I have to threaten someone to get service?

I completely agree with you. My point was that too many stores take the easy way out because it isn't affecting their business. If customers are willing to put up with rude staff and continue to shop there, why should they do anything about it? (Not my belief, just what I assume the store thinks.) Complain about it, tell them you'll take your business elsewhere.
  • I'll let everyone know if I get a response (for some reason, I doubt I will.) I wrote a pretty lengthy email siting multiple examples, so we'll see.
  • FWIW, I have experienced the same customer service issues at the UM on 7th Ave. My first time there, the cashier, who seemed clearly pissed off about having to ring me up, literally threw all three items I purchased into the bag. (One was a cheesecake that ended up upside down.)

After getting only slightly less hostile treatment the next time I was there, I emailed UM to share my experiences. Nothing nasty, just basically let them know how wonderful the store is until you actually have to deal with anyone who works there. I am pretty adamant about not just hopping on message boards and bitching about a place before trying to resolve it directly, but since I didn't get so much as a form email reply to my complaint, all bets are off.

It's a shame, since the store itself is really great. But if I wanted customer service like that I'd just assume hit a White Castle.

White Castle actually has superb customer service. Have you been to the one on Atlantic? The people there are always extremely courteous and efficient.
