It's fermented tea. It's expensive, tastes like crap, and claims to cure everything. Thus, it appeals to the rich and those addicted to Park Slopish consumer culture.
That said, it's less than half the price at the food co-op if you really want the stuff. -
i love the stuff.
too expensive to have all the time, but i usually get a couple on the weekend.
my body really does feel revived and a bit rejuvenated...
noticeably seems to help with digestion. -
My oldest child was making kombuca tea at home for the longest time. It was a very hard, long process. Had to have certain pots, certain sterilization methods, etc. I think we still have some mother pods (can't remember what they are called) in our freezer!

i've been buying kombucha at union market for the past year...$4.79 a pop!
i'm at work now on the upper west side and just found it at the local health food store for $3.49....
i'm stockin up!!!
i'm starting to sour on union market.
isn't brooklyn supposed to be less expensive than manhattan? -
my theory about kombucha (which i drink occasionally): it contains, in small amounts, alcohol, caffeine and sugar. of course it makes you feel good!

And makes you poop too! -
Love, Love, love kombucha. It tastes great and refreshing. I buy it at the co-op but noticed that Whole Foods has a sale on it right now, 2 for 5 bucks.

According to the website below it costs only THREE dollars a GALLON to make it yourself. The margins on that stuff in stores is insane!
http://www.happyherbalist.com/kombucha.htm
"Brewing your own kombucha tea is simple and inexpensive. Using plain white sugar and common tea costs about fifty cent a gallon to make at home. For the real connoisseur - or for those focusing on a specific health issue, using fine premium or organic tea and organic sugar the cost of a gallon of truly exquisite kombucha tea is still only about $3.00 a gallon." -

I bought some at Lee's a couple of months ago. Yuck. -
it's really easy to make yourself!!!!! we probably spent less than $1.00 and no more than 30 minutes yielding around 12 bottles. (we turn ours around every week.)
