Domestic in my building. — Brooklynian

Domestic in my building.

Last night, domestic drama spilled out into the stairwell of my building with this guy downstairs screaming that he'd been stabbed. I called the cops and they came pretty quickly.

I don't know if he actually had been stabbed or what since I stayed in my apartment. My neighbor tells me that the couple below her fight almost every night, and "the cops are tired of coming here". I never knew this because I'm in the other end of the building and it's the first time I could hear it.

And this girl had just moved in two floors below me. I had told her things were pretty copacetic here and this was her first night in the building. Joy. :roll:

  • We just had our first knock-down drag-out fight here. We heard a bunch of thumping and stumbling footsteps in the apartment upstairs, followed by someone screaming, "I don't know you, n-------!" over and over again, followed by some shouts about someone owing someone else money. Then, from the meat-packing sounds that followed, I take it they started hitting each other.

    We called 911 and the cops were there within about 2 minutes. I don't think anyone filed a complaint, though, because the officers were gone within minutes.

    Shouting continued intermittently for the next hour, and then someone stomped out of the building, still muttering angrily about money. We've been here more than a year and this was the first time this has happened.

    I thought for domestic abuse situations, somebody HAD to be arrested if police responded. Did I just make that up?
  • I think they arrest only if there is an obvious injury, or party "A" states party "B" hit me

    If its just loud arguing, I think it's left at that

    Maybe the law enforcement folks will chime in
  • For Family type offenses:
    Felonies= Must Arrest
    Misdemeanors= Must Arrest, unless Compl does not want the other party arrested. (officer may still make the arrest in that case, even if victim doesn't want party arrested)
    Violation= Must Be in Officers Presence for an Arrest
    Violation of Orders of Protection=Always Arrest
  • Well, I don't know what actually happened, because I didn't look to go see. If the guy did get stabbed, there wasn't any blood on the stairwell the next morning. Either that, or the cleaning crew got to it pretty quick. The cleaning crew comes here late at night.
