antibiotics + alcohol = problem? — Brooklynian

antibiotics + alcohol = problem?

so I just got prescribed some antibiotics (amoxicillin) and have also been attending a lot of cocktail parties because of a work-related conference. I hear that the combination of booze and antibiotics isn't so awesome - can someone tell me what the problem is? I obviously can't go back and fix it, and didn't even think about it til this AM when I looked at the warning label (after taking many doses), so I guess I'm just asking for the future.

(oh, and I am hoping that the stupid pills are working to some degree, at least)

  • That one is a myth. Antibiotics work fine with alcohol. Of course alcohol is probably not the best thing to be drinking while ill for a number of other reasons, but at least your antibiotics will still work fine.
  • No major problem here, though drinking when you're sick isn't so smart. Some antibiotics can cause nasty side-effects with alcohol, but in this case, I think it's just a matter of potentially affecting some of the PK/PD a little (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and thus effectiveness.
  • Some antibiotics, most notably Flagyl (metronidazole) will make you feel really sick if you drink any alcohol with them. But Amoxicillin should be no problem.
  • amoxicillan is fine.

flagyl is not fine. (although, if you feel as crappy as i did on flagyl, alcohol isn't tempting.)

    varies by antibiotic.
  • FYI, antibiotics may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills.

I guess booze could add to this being a concern ;)

This is true. Always use a backup method of contraception, not just while you're on the antibiotics, but until the end of the cycle in which you took them (until the end of your first period after completing the course of antibiotics).
