Hair Cut Color Advice? — Brooklynian

Hair Cut Color Advice?

MOD
MOD
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I need a new look and want to get my hair colored or highlighted.
Get it shorter too.

Any recs on a good hairstylist for color & cut?
Any websites you know of where I can get some ideas for colors?
Post some pictures of cool cuts you've seen :D

Ideally, I'd love to find a punk or rockabilly stylist to give me something fun and cool. I am however, avoiding blue or purple hair for work purposes of course. :P

  • I had an EXCELLENT experience with Mary and Medusa Salon- and everyone there kicked ass! She did a great job bleaching my hair platinum (well, touching up my roots and toning) and it was a really reasonable price. I havent gotten a cut from her but I plan to!
  • Go to Chinatown!
Hotness in the punkabilly category at a second story salon on the south side of Bayard, just west of Canal St, for super cheap.

    Top Model Salon
(yes, Top Model was on the tv the whole time I was there with my g'friend)
She saw Simon. She has straight hair -- curly girls are on your own.
    Phone: 212-566-8381
  • Dana at Hair Concern on 7th Ave. Heard abou her from this board and am a convert. She works Wed, Fri and Sat and is very reasonably priced.

If this is the first time you are coloring your hair, I'd go only 1-2 shades off your natural color for highlights ...sticking to the same color family. ...that's if you are just looking for something like you, but a little more "pop".
  • Subject: Shaun at Seagull is the mightiest!

I could not recommend Shaun at Seagull Haircutters more... i have 'problem' hair and ever since i've been going to Shaun people literally STOP ME ON THE STREET to ask who did my hair... complete strangers!!!

he is the best i've ever found. and he is SPOT ON with colour (people also ask me about who did my colour ... i've reddish highlights on dark brown hair... but seriously, waitresses, people in line for the bathroom.. EVERYONE has complimented me on my hair and NEVER have i ever received compliments before...) he is THAT good!

They are located on 240 west 10th st. between bleeker and hudson.
    phone is : 212.989. 1807.
website is www (dot) seagullhair (dot) com

    they're the best!!

Well, I'm out of ideas!
  • oh and Shaun can certainly do the 'rockstar' cut no problem!
  • I have an amazing hairstylist at Elizabeth Arden Red Door on 5th ave and 54th St. She's no more expensive than anyone else and she gives the best haircuts I've ever had in my life!
    PM me for her number!

I second the vote for Dana. Flexichick may have even heard about her from me because I've posted here a couple of times about Dana and Hair Concern. :) I haven't been there in a while because my schedule hasn't matched up with hers but she does a fantastic job and their prices are reasonable.
  • Should I be shot because I like the highlights on Kelly Clarkson's album

    oh jeeze......
  • Must be all the crack I'm smoking

I don't see any bangs in that picture. ;)

(I'm sorry... I lurk and watch everyone else with the smartass snarky comments. I just couldn't resist this time. lol)
  • If we pretend really hard that that hair isn't on her then I kind of like it. Chunky highlights like that can look good when done well and I like the bit of red in there.
  • If you feel like a schlep, you can check out the Bee Hive in Williamsburg. I think their stylists may be just what you are looking for.
  • it's the overzealous retouching of her face that gets me on that cd image
  • personally, i think chunky highlights only look good if they are such an unnatural color that no one could think you weren't trying to be punk.

    blue/pink/cherry red = good

    blonde/"hair" red = bad

i've seen some pretty dang foul chunky blondish highlights growing out recently, and i felt like i ought to send a sympathy card.

yes! those Chicklet teeth are freaking me out
  • I second the beehive in w'burg -- Kay or Casey (or anyone there, really) will get as rockabilly/punk as you wanna be. And their prices are very reasonable.
  • Subject: hair salon

I have had my last few cuts at Ultra Salon at 123 Essex street.
Although pricey the cuts were great. I had a master cutter cut my hair and it was the most expensive cut I had in my life but it lasted and lasted and held its shape. The last time I tried regular cutter and I saved a few dollars. Getting to Essex street was extremely easy just hopping on the f train. I hadn't walked around that neighborhood in many years and was surprised how it had changed - trendy stores etc. The salon has an edgy feel to it. You wear and oversize t-shirt rather than a robe when your hair is being cut and the cutters are friendly. While my hair was being colored -which I also liked, I had my eyebrows waxed and they looked
    terrific.
  • Yes I know this is an old thread, but just to say that based on recommendations from this board I went to Beehive http://www.thebeehivesalon.com/ in B-burg and am surprised to be delighted with result!

Last time I went to Biton on Vanderbilt, based on this rec:
    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42327&view=previous&sid=22d80823eda6189d49b622cbf916db4c
and tho' he did give me liquor and a nice cut, it was a bit too safe/conservative for my liking.

My new Beehive cut has a bit more of an edge to it, I think.
  • Well, seeing it was revived, I'll give you an update on my hair.

I went to Dana at Hair Concern on 7th ave. I had long hair, passed my shoulders.
I asked for an A-Line classic cut, and for the front to fall at my collar bone.
I won't go into the gruesome details, but lets just say I got a bob-cut in the back and 'dog ears' in the front.

I made an appointment with Marc at Le Chandelier Salon on 5th ave to get it fixed.
The guy was awesome. He has over 30 years experience cutting hair and took his time and was very precise.
He really cares about hair and checked every last strand of my hair to make sure it fell right.

So, now I have chin length hair
but the shape is just right so it will grow out very nicely.
Still working on the color thing, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Marc at Chandelier to anyone here.
He's amazing and saved my hair!

Edit to take out the boobs :P
  • Eek. I don't even want to know what a boob-cut is.
  • Wow, I'm surprised. I only had one mishap with Dana where my highlights came out more golden than expected. She fixed them for free and was very apologetic. I don't even think it was all her fault. I should have looked at a color wheel instead of description
  • Yeah she's a sweet woman and told me to come back within a week if I wanted the cut changed, but I figured I didn't want to take my chances with her again. The cut was already very short.
It may just be that A-Line cuts are not her strong point. Who knows.
  • I use a guy who has been in business for several years - I met him via his boyfriend. anyway, previous to him I'd been going to devachan. then I went to this hipster spot in the LES. both times I asked for a bob and both times I left with something less than exciting. I have curly hair, btw. anyway, dave heard me say "I just want something different and sexy" and said "well, remember that season of SATC when carrie cut her hair off? let's do that." which was, basically, what I wanted. I love the cut, if anyone with curly hair needs a rec just PM me. and yes, pitu, this is you-know-who from poker night's man.
