Good Vacuum Cleaner for Wood Floors? — Brooklynian

Good Vacuum Cleaner for Wood Floors?

So, I am fed up with my existing machines - too big, not good on floors, etc.

My whole apartment is bare wood floors except for an area rug in the living room.

I'm looking for a good machine for wood floors - lightweight, powerful, with some attachments to clean the hair out of the couch, dust from the blinds, etc.....not Dyson-expensive

Any suggestions?

  • OMG- thank you SO much for asking this question!

I actually go around on my hands and knees with a dustbuster! I've gone through so many vacuums I can't tell you.....and they ALL suck- and not in the good way.

The Dyson's look awesome though....and when you think about it- its a vacuum that you'll probably have for a long time.

    Good birthday Wish List Gift.
  • Yes, we've reached the age when we ask for appliances for our birthdays.....how sad :lol::lol:

I was doing the dustbuster thing today (once again)

Let's see if anybody has good suggestions
  • I have two dogs, hair everywhere, dirt and dust from being on street level and A 5-year-old Dyson that just won't quit. It was pricey but it gets cheaper every year I still have it. It is the only vacuum I have ever had that actually gets up animal hair no matter where it is. :D:D:D:D

Full disclosure: I no not, nor have I ever, worked for Dyson, or any of it's subsidiaries or dealers, either here, or in a foreign country. :)

which one do you have? is it yellow or purple?
  • Damn. Its nice to hear that I'm not the only one crawling around on my hands and knees using my dustbuster to vacuum pet hair from apartment crevices and couch cushions!

I too am following thread for suggestions. Thanks.
  • I like my Miele s251 i (flamenco II)

    http://vacuum-sale.com/household/mach_detail.asp?brand=Miele&model=S251i+Flamenco+II&ProductType=Household+Vacuum+Cleaners

Not cheap, but as a person with 3 cats whose asthma can be triggered by said cats, well worth it.
  • Okay, this is going to sound really strange, but I swear by my shopvac. I bought one when I first purchased my home and was doing some renovations, and started using it as my regular vac when I realized that it was better at sucking up dust than any of the household vacs. It's unwieildly, but is fairly lightweight. Best part is it cleans up wet and dry spills...
  • After wasting $90 on an Electrolux electric broom with a built-in removable dustbuster (because it's cordless, there is not enough suction. Even for wooden floors and a flat rug, as prettily designed as it is. Plus the damn thing is wastefully plugged in all the time to charge)

we finally coughed up the big bucks for a Miele. It's small, it's beautiful, it works really well. I got the light blue one, which is one of the smallest ones. But you gotta have around $500.
It was worth it not to have to think about buying a vac again for a few decades (fingers crossed) Like LTT said, it gets cheaper every year I have it.

I couldn't get past the aesthetics (paired with the $$) of the Dyson, even tho people love them.

ApartmentTherapy.com has a lot of good vac info.
On a rec from there, I went to Desco Appliances
    131 W 14th St, New York, NY (212) 989-1800

But locally there's J&R, that little appliance store on 7th Ave (Union/Pres)
  • i actually love my Kenmore canister vac with various attachments. i think it does a really good job, but i've got wood floors and rugs, so i need to have something which can do both well.
  • I love my yellow Dyson because it picks up everything. That said, considering they have those ads with the guy bragging about the thing's design, it's got some pretty big design flaws. To switch from using the sweeper to the hose is a pretty major pain in the ass involving multiple cumbersome steps. Also, the canister doesn't empty so well. There are parts of it that won't let go of the accumulated dust when you try to empty it so you have to kind of sweep it out with something (I use a chopstick). It still leaves my carpets and floor cleaner than any vacuum I've had before, including a really nice old Electrolux canister vac, but I just wish it were easier to use.

WoW! People LOVE their Rigid.....I am close to making a decision. The best part: its only $99.

It sucks AND blows. I am very excited by the thought of that...not sure why ;)
  • I don't know about that particular one, but fyi those wet/dry shopvacs are LOUD mutherfkers.

Let us know if it sucks hard ;-)

Seriously - if you buy one, let us know what you think
  • After Pitu's insight about the noise though, I'm less inclined. I have tinnitus and the noise level would really be an issue.
  • I'd tell you to go to HD or Lowes and ask them to turn one on for you. I don't think mine is appreciably louder than a regular vac, but then again I live in total and utter chaos so I'm probably a bad judge.
  • Somebody gave me a new one (Shopvac) when my ancient Electrolux was shredding apart. It worked great, but I couldn't stand to use it as a regular vacuum cleaner. On the spectrum, I would put myself as Sensitive To Sound.

It was a pretty large hulk, so it didn't fit in my apt very well either.
I think the "shop" part of shopvac means you give up the niceities of sound baffling and go right for sucking marbles off the floor, because it's expected that you have a bandsaw going half the time anyway...
The Rigid could be different, but at least you can find out in advance.
